I was at Brooks when Hape was moving up in the world and Tim Bowens, Freddie and Will Roach etc all had big dreams. I figured at least one of them would have some relevance beyond Killen Alabama. Glad Freddie is still doing big things.

The only possible explanation is that we’ve hired an awesome DC. I will accept no other interpretation.

It’s the culmination of the trends I’ve seen with some of the kids I teach. A toxic combination of insufficient parental influence, lack of experience with interpersonal communication from the pandemic, and an obsession with status and image cultivated by social media.

I see the JV versions of this every day.

My guess would be that Freddie is leaving with DeMeco and Grantham is the new DL coach or he is taking one of the OLB/ILB positions (he's coached both).

Since it's Eboigbe I'd guess DL, but DeMeco hasn't been hired anywhere yet so I dunno.

Is it really about the money tho? Look at their schedule next year, they’ll have the top defense in the country, on their way to a 3 peat. He should be able to name his job next year.

All of this is subject to change at any moment, especially timeline-wise, but here is some info we have gathered up to this point.

-Multiple sources have told us that the lack of movement on the DC position is because Saban has not made that his priority at this stage. Instead he's chose to focus on finishing out the recruiting cycle and get a head start on the underclassmen. He only has a limited window to be out and about, so he's capitalizing on that. He's on the road pretty much every day he can be. So that is the priority.

-That doesn't mean he hasn't spent plenty of time on the phone fact-finding and asking for opinions. I know he's made calls to seek information and I also know there is some vetting going on behind the scenes, which is how he always handles these things. I don't think he's going to be rushed, but if he finds his guy we expect him to act quickly.

-As far as any offensive openings go I was told there aren't any so that isn't Saban's priority at all. Doesn't mean there won't be, but also should note if offensive positions open up there will be a good list of candidates interested with the latest successes of the OCs under Saban. A few coaches said it’s about as close as a lock as you can get to getting a head coach opportunity after leaving.

-Austin Armstrong has filled one of the two defensive openings. We were told he visited the week before news broke and had Saban sold pretty quickly. Also Armstrong jumped at the opportunity. As to position I was told that will depend on how the rest of the staff fills out. Same for his recruiting area. But he's already out there filling in some gaps.

Granted it’s not a lot of definite information but Nick Saban has always moved at his own pace. But we are keeping our ear to the ground.

I don't think Schumann would turn the opportunity down. If he doesn't come here it's because Saban didn't offer him out of respect to Kirby IMO

On Tuesday, the final On300 rankings for 2023 were revealed. Alabama saw a few of its most recent signees drop, but it also saw several guys make a significant jump, including Eufaula (Ala.) edge Yhonzae Pierre. He climbed 17 spots from No. 34 to No. 17, which earned him a five-star rating.

With another five-star edge rusher already in the class in Keon Keeley, that got me thinking.

Alabama has done a tremendous job of building its defense around its outside linebackers in recent years. The dynamic tandem of Tim Williams and Ryan Anderson got things started, but from there, the production and signings have reached new levels.

As things sit, Alabama has nine players on the 2023 roster who could see time at outside linebacker. Of those nine guys, eight of them were given five-star status by at least one of the four major recruiting services. Oh, and that includes three in the 2023 signing class alone.

Here are the eight players and which services had them rated as five-star recruits:

Now, this doesn’t include Jihaad Campbell, who was rated as a five-star edge by three of the four major recruiting services (ESPN had him at No. 41 overall) during the 2022 cycle. It’s still possible for him to end up on the outside, but he’s been playing off-ball ever since he arrived in Tuscaloosa.

Russaw could take a similar path, as On3 has him listed as a linebacker and not an edge. But I can easily see him starting off with the outside linebackers in spring practice. He’s got fantastic upside at both spots. Since we haven’t seen him working off the ball yet, we’re including him here.

Not only is there talent in the outside linebacker room, but there’s a nice blend of experience.

Following the 2019 season, Alabama lost both of its starting edge guys in Anfernee Jennings and Terrell Lewis. That was 1,134 combined snaps (in just 2019) from the outside linebacker room gone, which came out to over 82%. The Tide will lose Will Anderson, but the overall experience won’t take nearly as big of a hit.

Turner and Braswell combined for 976 snaps this season and have 1,460 in their careers. There are your two returning headliners, which will ensure guys like Alexander, Keeley and Pierre all have enough time to develop properly. If any of those are ready to step up and take snaps, great. It won’t be out of necessity though.

    That’s a good thing.

It’s not often a program, even at a place like Alabama, can lose a guy with 34.5 career sacks — second-most in school history — and still feel really good about the position moving forward. On top of the eight guys listed above, there’s also Quandarrius Robinson, a former top-75 recruit.

I’m sure Alabama would still like to see more from him, Koht and Kennedy, but they at least make for valuable depth options. Otherwise, you know you have a valuable, effective starting duo along with guys like Keeley, Alexander, Pierre and maybe Russaw who are all oozing with potential.

If he doesn’t come it’s for the exact same reasons Kirby didn’t take the UGA DC under Richt. It has nothing to do with not offering out of respect for Kirby. Come on jun.

Kirby never coached under Richt. These aren't even close. Saban has always operated with that standard. He has stated in the past that he would never try to hire someone on Belichick's staff without his permission and that's an unwritten rule he lives by. I don't think it's a stretch that he might feel the same way regarding Kirby.

  46. junior5

    junior5 @TrustyPatches’ granddaddy

not to mention, comparing Richt to Saban is downright disrespectful. Not even close. More coaches have gone on to become head coaches under Saban than just about any coach in history.

Sigh, jun explaining shit to you is like explaining shit to dbl sometimes. Why would you leave the Dc position at the top team in the country, to go coach a defense that’s currently a mess? He can stay where he is, and with next years schedule, be able to name your job. Why would Kirby never leave to go be Dc under Richt? Because at the time it was a step down, and he could just stay where he was and get the real job he desired.
