Too much of a capitalist for me then. Plus had a stance on the opposite side of me in a supreme court case back in '99. Therefore fuck him...may he rot in hell!!!!!!!!
Dang I didn't know Judge Roy Bean had closed. :/ https://mobilebaymag.com/judge-roy-bean/ And it didn’t hurt that Jimmy himself showed up from time to time for an impromptu concert. Jimmy’s folks lived right up the road and every now and then the rumor mill would start churning and the bar phone would start ringing. “Is Jimmy Buffett coming to the Bean tonight?” We always had the same answer. “We don’t know, but maybe?” And we never did know, but on those nights, the place would be packed! Buffett showed up just often enough to make people believers. I’m not sure Jack and Phillip didn’t start the rumors themselves on more than one occasion. Buffett did play one actual concert there, inside the Bean to a small fortunate crowd. Jack called it, The “I Heard I Was in Town” Show. Naturally.
My grandfather passed last year in early August at 76. Met Jimmy multiple times through him, he was always as chill as you'd imagine. Not exactly religious, but the idea of him having a beer with Jimmy again is a nice thought.
Always have to make it about you, huh? Spoiler jk That’s a cool person to have been from your home town
Only saw him live once. Was on the beach in Gulf Shores when the Deepwater Horizon oil spill happened. He did a benefit concert, beach was packed. Walked down from a condo and met some friends and got free tickets from one of the several BP reps handing them out outside the gate. Sat in the sand with some friend who were true parrot heads and honestly had a hell of a time. Was never my favorite but his connection and love for that area was real, and it was a pretty cool sight to see. RIP
My uncle with a parrot tattoo is currently already drinking and blasting music while sharing videos with the family. Did seem like a King
the funny thing about him is he got ultra rich and famous off a couple corny hits (which he parlayed into money better than maybe anyone ever has) but if you listen to more stuff he was a legitimately great songwriter in addition to being a great dude by all accounts. really sad
Riverbend in Cincinnati is located in an area that has been an amusement park—horse track—and live music venue for over 130 years. The park next to the amphitheater has a 100+ year old pool that is the size of a football field and has a huge grassy area that they would allow campers to park and camp for the three days. It was pretty cool and no one else did it.
Guy was just about having a good time and sharing that good time with others. Key west lost another legend.
Because of Fins? She came down from Cincinatti It took her three days on a train Looking for some peace and quiet Hoped to see the sun again But now, she lives down by the ocean She's taking care to look for sharks They hang out in the local bars And they feed right after dark
He was a great musician but probably a better businessman. He road a lifestyle into being a billionaire.
Interestingly, though, supposedly Jimmy actually first used the phrase "Parrot Head" at the much smaller Timberwolf amphitheater at Kings Island, a other reason he got so big here, beyond the obvious connection to Fins. Sadly, I never caught one of those Riverbend shows. I'm kicking the hell out of myself right now. That's a fun venue and I can't imagine a more fun show for it.
Saw him a bunch of times, and when my wife was at the U for law school she worked in real estate law at a boutique firm. They did a lot of work with Jimmy so she met him a couple times. Was an amazing human by so many accounts.
You are exactly the person that I have in mind when I make those type of posts so it's funny to me that out of all of the thousands of T-MB users...you are the first and only one (up to this point) to reply. Lol never change you big dumb sanctimonious ass.
I’m originally from near Pittsburgh and had no idea about Buffett/Cincy until I started dating my wife mid-90’s. We came down from Columbus for a show in 1996 and it was a blast. Parking lots and campers tailgating everywhere. People just hanging out in the parking lot to party without even going to the show. They would close the racetrack, sell parking, and line up food trucks at River Downs. It was like a festival.
Yeah whoever got him to license the Margaritaville restaurants and machines set him up. That and he also was one of the main winter concert series in the Caribbean/Mexico guys.
Didn’t have a lot of exposure to him as a kid and always assumed he was a corny song guy until I heard “Come Monday” as background music at a restaurant and googled to find out who it was. Now I celebrate the guy’s entire catalog
MILWAUKEE-Asked restaurant host: "God, did you hear about Jimmy Buffet?" Host: "No."Me: "Died. He is gone." Thought he would cry.
Like I said, really kicking myself. Tickets always sold out immediately. I worked at Record Town in Kenwood in college and we had a Ticketmaster. This was before online ticket sales. We always had an "all hands" approach to staffing when his tickets went on sale. They'd show up decked out to wait in line overnight to get tickets. That's probably why I never went. I just assumed tickets would be impossible and I'd be better off spending the upcharge somewhere else because "there's always next year." Welp....
Great read on the business of Buffett: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/08/arts/jimmy-buffett-does-not-live-the-jimmy-buffett-lifestyle.html
My uncle in Charleston was a local musician for a lot of years and would always sing at family get together. He’d always end the night with pirate looks at 40. I’ve loved that song ever since.
Seen him in concert maybe 25 times and was always a blast. This one hits me hard bc I grew up loving his music. He's one of the few musicians that could transport me to a different place in my mind. Tin Cup Chalice is an all time favorite song and immediately has me seeing a sunset. Will be wearing a Hawaiian shirt today in honor.
Guy made a billion dollars off of liking going on vacation. I think they have Margaritaville branded nursing homes now.
Pirate Looks at 40 was my dad’s favorite song in the world and I played it approximately two thousand times when he passed away. RIP to a legend.
Saw him at Wrigley field back in the day. Wasn’t an avid listener but it remains one the most fun shows I’ve ever been to.
