I watched this earlier and suddenly starting craving Popeyes. Ate Popeyes, and now I realize that it wasn't the chicken that I wanted.
Been on a Star Wars kick lately. Rewatching the prequel trilogy made me google some of Natalie Padme’s newer movies. Came across this gem.
There's a 16th century Flemish painting in the Groeninge Museum in Bruges where they show a corrupt official skinned and then his skin draped over his chair of office afterwards. Highly recommend that museum if you're in (fucking) Bruges
I always enjoy how stoic everyone in the paintings are. Zero expression, like, "damn, gotta cut another motherfucker's skin off today." Even the guy is like, "yup, totally deserved this"
Yeah, the gallery had a bunch of early Flemish paintings where so many people are stiff and expressionless, then as Flemish painters began to experiment with expression and posture the figures got more lifelike. Interesting to look at the evolution of the genre in that particular museum; enough material to see it, but not so much that it's overwhelming. A stark contrast to the earlier works is Jacob van Oost's Christ Crowned with Thorns. After seeing so many stiff figures, you get a completely stunning rendition of the agony of Christ being tormented - literally stopped me in my tracks as I came upon it. Boom. Took a closeup shot of just Christ's face to get the eyes - actually forgot about the rest of the painting until I googled it just now. Just a masterful work.
My favorite piece of art involving mutilated religious leaders is the Cadaver Synod, when a dead Pope's corpse was put on trial The Cadaver Synod (also called the Cadaver Trial; Latin: Synodus Horrenda) is the name commonly given to the posthumous ecclesiastical trial of Pope Formosus, held in the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome during January 897.[1] The trial was conducted by Pope Stephen VI (sometimes called Stephen VII), the successor to Formosus' successor, Pope Boniface VI. Stephen had Formosus' corpse exhumed and brought to the papal court for judgment. He accused Formosus of perjury and of having acceded to the papacy illegally. At the end of the trial, Formosus was pronounced guilty and his papacy retroactively declared null.
That's fucking awesome that he's looking healthy and okay. Would have been really sad if he went out looking like that second pic.
What's fascinating about this page is that you have Mila Kunis doing that earlier gif from black swan - then a Mccauley Caulken meme. They dated for over 8 years and I feel like no one remembers that every occurred.
Reminds me of Caravaggio’s The Crowning with Thorns. His use of light is exceptional and stopped me in my tracks just the same. Simon Schama had a great series called The Power of Art that you may dig if you ever come across it. Has a Caravaggio episode that is fantastic.
