Gojira was always a band that I respected because of From Mars to Sirius and they absolutely killed live, but I've been listening to their full discography over the last few days. Somehow they might even be underrated
also mario duplantier reminds me of neil peart in the best kind of way. someone who is an incredible musician but isn't playing like he is the "main dude" in the band.
one thing that metal bands are stupid as fuck about is t-shirt design. give me the band logo and art only. no lyrics. no album titles. no other bullshit. looking at the gojira merch store now and this shirt sparked my years-old pet peeve here
Mario Duplantier is really fucking good. I've never gotten into Gorjira, but I've also never heard anything of theirs that I hate.
It's not for me, but my beef was with your underrated comment. 20 million views on a youtube doesn't scream underrated metal band to me, not to mention tours with bands that play in 15,000-20,000 capacity venues.
that's fair. i just meant in terms of the way that people who like metal talk about great bands obviously there is a bunch of luck involved with making it "big" so "great bands" might be a loaded phrase but i didnt mean it to be
If I do end up with this thing, however, I will be crossing the bridge into Portland and licking every doorknob I find.
i'm lit and listening to stuff from classic albums that i love but haven't got into in awhile the song Divinations from Mastodon's Crack the Skye just owns. the riffs. the tightness of the whole band together. the surf guitar solo.
Mastodon is also the best live band I've seen in terms of their playing and it's not even close. And Gojira opened for them
Been crushing the new Intronaut and the King Gizzard from last year. Also been using the opportunity to dive deeper into old King Crimson stuff that I never really listened to.
And Gorod’s album from 2018. I don’t really like either of them, but I’ve been spinning Car Bomb’s album and the HU.
King Gizzard rules. Intronaut also rules. After listening to so much comical technical playing and just overplaying in general, which I do love but it's kind of obnoxious really, and then listening to bands like King Crimson and Yes from the early 70s who just rip in a much more subdued style... it makes me wonder why these bands aren't more popular
Only album from Gojira I like is FMTS. Never really could get into the rest. I just ordered the new split from Mare Cognitum/Spectral Lore on vinyl. It’s basically a double album with both bands, not really a split. Pesci you should check out Spectral Lore’s Gnosis album.
hell yeah, Gorod. Bekhten's Curse has been steady in my playlist since that album came out. that tapped guitar riff, for anyone who may not be familiar
thanks. i didn't mean to leave anyone out in terms of tagging, it just seemed like it was only us 3 in here. always appreciate your recs
it pisses me off when i see people talking about john mayer being one of the great living guitar players for bending a note when some poor french guitar player is tapping out that Bekhten's Curse riff
i enjoy albums that are one cohesive piece of music that establish a nice base early and builds on it throughout
i've been observing that there is a plethora of fresh (newish) death metal bands out there doing exciting stuff. here's my list - 1914 - Blood Incantation - Chapel of Disease - Gatecreeper - Hath - Hooded Menace - Necrot - Rivers of Nihil - Slugdge - Sulphur Aeon - Temple of Void - Tomb Mold - Ulcerate who am i missing? of these, Chapel of Disease (thx burnttatertot), Rivers of Nihil, Sulphur Aeon, and Slugdge are my favorites.
https://yourlastrites.com/2020/03/25/crossing-the-fiery-path-into-the-world-of-hellenic-black-metal/ Really good write up on Hellenic black metal, especially the masters, Rotting Christ
Love older Horrendous, can't seem to get into what they've done lately. Same goes for Tribulation, the old stuff is great but the new not so much.
