Guy and I know and his BIL are driving over and launching a boat to try and get to pine island to look for his FIL. Rode it out in st James city, but haven’t heard from him yet
Guy from my hometown has become a millionaire because of natural disasters. He runs one of this storm services things hat brings mobile homes, water, ac etc to towns and banks a ton of fema money.
Morgan and Morgan scumbag was running back to back commercials all week on every local network in Florida
it’s really cold and windy and rainy here in central nc. people are freaking out. grocery stores are packed and they already cancelled schools. daughter’s daycare closes at noon today. wife was going to some paint class with her friends and they cancelled that i don’t get it
Let me help. There's been a ton of variance in the forecast for how Fri/Sat were going to go in the inland Carolinas, depending on how much the storm recharged, how fast it moved, and what track it took. Schools preemptively closed for Friday because buses can't run in high winds. The daycare probably follows their lead by policy. People stock up on groceries in case of mass power outages, which are highly likely if the storm swings bad. People running unnecessary classes like "wine and paint evening" don't want to be out for them. Remember the people in Florida yesterday who were stupid for not preparing for the worst case? Today the people who did are stupid?
Bullshit. You're not magically immune to power outages and high winds. People took reasonable precautions and you are inconvenienced in trivial ways, and you're whining about it. You know what I did? I made sure my downspouts were clear and my sump pump was in good order. Am I OK?
none of it has inconvenienced me in the slightest other than having to get my kid a couple hours earlier than usual. i never whined about it because it doesnt impact me at all. just said it seems to be overkill for what will amount to a rain event in my area stop being weird
This was the cone from last Saturday. Very easy for people in southwest Florida to look at that and think they need to just barely keep an eye on it. The cone isn’t going away but they need to make adjustments. Maybe a secondary cone that extends to show size of the storm? A way to better explain storm speed as well would be helpful. I’m usually complaining that the people who don’t leave should have but only a select few very veteran hurricane people were whispering “Charlie” with this hurricane before the shifts the last day or 2.
I think they really do need to do something to make it clearer for people. I would also like to see something besides just the “M”. I think people glance at it and read it as 110 mph and don’t see the actual wind speeds.
Co-workers friend is in the coast guard. He was sent down to Naples/Fort Myers area to start going through homes. He said his small group had already pulled out 50-100 bodies out of homes. He lost count. People still up in trees. Alligators in peoples houses. Absolute nightmare.
I'll never forget driving through New Orleans after Katrina and seeing the spray paint on the side of abandoned homes indicating whether or not it had been searched for bodies yet. God bless our emergency workers.
I think the intensity prediction being off was probably more of a problem than the path. Huge difference between hunkering down for a Cat 1-3 than a Cat 4-5
Makes sense when you see stuff like this. The Liki Tiki was my favorite bar in FMB because it was always full of people you would look at and go, "Yeah, they will be at the bar when the hurricane hits" https://www.news-press.com/story/ne...rt-myers-beach-bar-liki-tiki-bbq/10443091002/
There's an explainer video somewhere on the NHC website that basically says they alter the size of the cone based off of how effective their recent forecasts have been and that their model aims to keep the center of the storm somewhere inside the cone 2 out of 3 times.
Hurricane was shit but it’s gonna be a beautiful day in the 70s here in central Florida gonna enjoy clean up in this weather Stay safe Carolina bros
Where were those people supposed to evacuate? Going north puts you in more danger of the hurricane, based on the cone zone. Can’t really going any further south.
Latest local update from Lee County is most FPL work is still recon, not much repair going on. Apparently the water facilities suffered major damage and will require a massive effort from the Army Corp of Engineers to fix. Looking at a long time for both...
I mean, it’s here at this point. Not like it’s 5 days out. Given our area’s (eastern nc/sc) likelihood of flooding and downed trees from momentary gusts causing power outages, it probably wasn’t a bad idea for them to grab some things.
My buddy finally heard from his dad in Iona last night. He's okay, lost almost everything but glad to be alive. May be moving up here to Iowa now as he has to start over.
Glad to hear he is okay. That has to be a miserably helpless feeling. Admittedly, I chuckled at his relocation plans. Is the man allergic to consonants?
Imagery is up for the impacted areas https://storms.ngs.noaa.gov/storms/ian/index.html#14/26.5372/-82.1942
This is a big issue with weather in general. While both the hurricane center and storm prediction center have worked to make things more accessible to the general public, many of these products were not created for public consumption initially. They were mainly for other nws offices and tv mets. They have all become very public facing products now, with varying degrees of success. Things like the cone can be exceedingly misleading (and taken out of context) to the general public unless it's explained well or a person seeks out how to understand. I see this exacerbated by social media accounts sharing shit all the time that are factually incorrect or misleading at best. Ppl flock to these FB groups and wind up believing things that aren't accurate
the governor just had a press conference saying the cone was not on SW Florida 48 hours before landfall…..shit like this is why the line needs to be removed from the NHC forecast. Just put a cone up
Yeah the black line I guess can be deceiving but even if if doesn't go right over your house, you're going to get hurricane force winds and storm surge if you're close to it. This is especially true as the hurricane gets closer.
I don't think they'll ever drop the line. It's misleading for a public figure to say something like that cause the cone gives the range of expected track of the circulation center. The storm itself will likely extend beyond the cone. I get why it happens and I know there is research to try to figure out other ways to message these things to the public I'm rarely deal with tropical, but I feel like the vast majority of media/social media is too focused on the eventual category of the storm. While very important, it doesn't properly convey the danger...what about impacts? Storm surge, flooding, tornadoes, etc. Anyway, just my opinion
It would frustrated me to no end to work with the NHC or as a meteorologist in general spending a week warning people about this and then get blamed when it hits. It's ridiculous to me.
Comes with the territory, unfortunately. In my experience, most people are great but there are some very toxic ppl out there
It probably didn't help that most of the weather media continually said "it's gonna hit Tampa!" up until Tuesday afternoon. But I generally agree with your point.
The 'I would have left, but the 'line'" argument falls on deaf ears to me. There is a percentage of the population that will not leave regardless of warning. I've routinely experienced police/first responders going door to door, to ensure evacuation... This, in case they didn't pick up on all their neighbors shuttering up & leaving, grocery stores being void of emergency supplies & all the local news fear-mongering for ratings for a week leading up to landfall. I'm sure there are some elderly that cannot physically evacuate, but the vast majority are just ignorant & endangering others, that will risk their lives to save them when conditions become untenable.
https://explore.org/livecams/frying-pan/frying-pan-cam haven't been keeping up with thread last day or so, has anyone else been watching the flag get shredded?
Idk that's still pretty close by that a major hurricane is going to make landfall. I just think having to use the exact right words all the time is just an unreasonable standard.
