Prep school heavy but he was really good there was only a question of if southern kids would take to him....and he answered those pretty much immediately at LSU
Me either, but I remember people saying “how is a dude from Ohio who coached in Utah and never been at this level gonna recruit in the south?” But yeah, crazy to think it’s been that long. I got my first rivals sub a year or two after he took the job.
Urban used the joke state of FSU and Miami to his adavantage....big thing that gets overlooked Guy had zero in state comp
Have any Bama fans said that Coach K(alen) is not potentially going to be a step back in recruiting? This feels like one of those threads where nobody is really disagreeing with anybody.
Not outright. But there's absolutely insinuation that Bama recruits itself, that you don't have to recruit that well to win, etc. They're not concerned. Reads like denial.
It’s a total unknown, and there’s no evidence one way or another of his ability to recruit at Alabama. It’s a waste of breath at this point. Holding the roster together/keeping potential starters out of the portal is step one.
Nobody has; we fully expect it, just like we expect that we won’t win six titles in 12 years. I think the question being asked by other fanbases is whether we’ll roll out the tar and feathers if that comes to pass, which we are arguing isn’t going to be an issue if DeBoer wins, to which the goalposts then shifted to “well, but what will happen when he doesn’t win like Saban?”, at which point we starting going in circles.
There's ample evidence he couldn't recruit at Washington. I don't know why you think it'll be altogether different at Alabama where the competition is a million times more cutthroat
I assume he’s bringing his whole staff from Washington. I think I remember hearing his coaches have stayed together (with him)for sometime. Curious on who will be his defensive coordinator. Best I can tell he’s not a a defensive dude. That and recruiting would be concerning. Both could be fixed with the proper assistance
the only concern about recruiting is him not having any experience doing it in the South shit is different when you go up against Kirby, LSU, etc everyday compared to the Oregons of the west coast
Is Rhule recruiting the same, better, or worse for Nebraska than he did at Baylor? Honest question as I have no idea.
better question is will sites continue to overrate HS players based off whether or not they have an alabama offer
Ryan Grubb (OC) and Chuck Morrell (co-DC) have been with him since Day 1 at Sioux Falls. William Inge (his other co-DC) has been with him since Indiana and Lee Marks (RB) has been with him since Fresno. This is the first real bit of controversy we may see in regards to staffing, as there are several guys on the current defensive staff that we’d like to stick around (notably TRob and Freddie Roach). TRob especially seems unlikely to stick around without a DC gig. Want to see how it plays out.
We are all extremely concerned about recruiting. Go back and read what we have been debating the past week before he was hired. I don’t think he takes the job without knowing the pressure he will get to build top five/top ten classes. We are hoping that the infrastructure Saban has built+keeping a few assistants from the past staff will help him do that. the biggest key right now is keeping the guys we have on campus. If he can do that and put together a good season I think recruiting will get much easier. If we see a mass exodus+ a 9 win season then I think we will all press the panic button. But I don’t think he has ever coached a 9 win season in his career.
Grubb staying at Washington as Hc would open the door for more SEC guys to join the staff. But I would very much like Grubb to come with him.
What about Courtney Morgan? He was a player scout director kinda guy. He found us Mason Graham (55 Dlineman). He’s a west coast guy that is really good at procuring talent.
seems a bit crazy to think a coach with little to no history of staff turnover is gonna hire/retain coaches he has no relationship with
We found out who Courtney Morgan was about 5 minutes before we were all acting like we’ve known about him for years and he is the key to DeBoer recruiting in the south.
He's recruiting the same, with somewhat better results. He was a pretty good recruiter at Baylor. Numerous coaches have established that you can recruit well at Washington. DeBoer hasn't. That's not "a complete unknown." Alabama is about to take a step back in recruiting. The questions are: by how much, and how much actually matters? DeBoer hasn't been around anywhere long enough to actually see how he builds and develops a team. Put that together with his woeful recruiting results, and I'd be pretty concerned if I were AL's AD. That's why I think the idea here is for AL and DeBoer to each use the other to get what they need for the next 1-2 years, because I don't think Byrne would accept that risk any longer term
Came on the plane with him to Tuscaloosa. (Edit for The Blackfish FROM THE LITTLE I’VE READ ABOUT HIM) I think hope he’ll be the key cog for trying to boost our NIL and recruiting game for DeBoer with support from Saban.
Sorry, not that invested this am. Figured it’d be quicker to just ask. Kinda hung over and just starting shake the cobwebs
I wasn’t making a comment on your investment, more the Courtney Morgan frenzy that occurred in Bama circles after the plane landed last night
Alabama doesn’t recruit itself, but it’s a hell of a lot easier to get talent to Alabama than Washington or Fresno. Plus he’s starting from a Top 3 talented roster. He will need help getting acclimated to SEC recruiting because he’s never done it here, but the fact he hasn’t done it before doesn’t preclude him from being successful.
I don’t think it’s a guarantee that he does or doesn’t recruit that way, but we’re both fans of a school that hired Dan Mullen and we made lots of those same assumptions that surely he wouldn’t recruit Florida like he did Mississippi State, and then he repeatedly signed classes full of Mullen specials.
saw a tweet about Courtney Morgan building Washington's playoff team. Then I saw another tweet about them adding two starters to Peterson's kids. Not sure what to believe. Also.. I initially thought it was a lady. My take is Deboer is going to kill it with Saban's guys if he can find a QB. I'm not sure that's even a question. Guy can coach. Sustaining that down the road is the only real concern.
Suffice to say that you gotta dance with the one you brought and DeBoer is dressed to the nines right now, so we’re going to boogie.
Alright. From this conversation, it sure didn't seem like it was registering and it was a little strange to see fans of the GOAT recruiter all of a sudden "meh" recruiting. Maybe Courtney Morgan is the difference or not. Wasn't really at Washington. Not sure any fanbase has more experience yawning at admonitions of recruiting underperformance than Nebraska. We're dumb and it goes bad everytime.
It seems like self awareness might be not be a strong suit of yours, but you do realize it’s equally questionable to think theres not a chance he might improve as a recruiter at a place like Alabama? Its a total unknown, and its definitely a concern - something that weve noted since the start of this search
What to believe? I guess I'd believe what's plainly observable from the roster. A team full of Petersen's 6th year seniors + Penix.
