My dad was very into Motown in high school, and branched out to a lot of James Brown stuff late 60’s. He took my mom on a date to see James Brown, and she didn’t tell her dad where they were going, because racism made him terrified of such things.
His recording studio was next to my childhood dentist and we'd see him all the time. Also have a hand-written western union telegram from him to my grandfather for helping his dad out
My OP was just a shitpost about how I’m old enough to remember when Stomp by Kirk Franklin got regular rotation on MTV.
yea i have thought about that a ton as I hit 40 a few days back growing up my Mom had nothing but Motown/Oldies on in the station wagon. Likely have to have an AM tuner to replicate that. now what do kids listen to, political podcasts in their mom's Model Y?
The use of Let’s Stay Together as background in Pulp Fiction in the scene where Bruce Willis is told to throw the fight was perfect.
Al green “how can you mend a broken heart” and jimmy ruffin “what becomes of the broken hearted” are underrated, incredibly written songs.
I know a guy who has worked on his swimming pool multiple times. And by that guy I mean me. they are always my go-tos.
Cigarettes and Coffee I've Been Loving You Too Long These Arms of Mine Tired of Being Alone Let’s Stay Together Call Me (Come Back Home) swoon
I was legit confused about which soul you meant because of your name. I’m an 70s soul guy. It’s the first music I ever heard and it’s the music every song I’ve ever loved is sampled from. Stax is a really good documentary on HBOMax about the early days of Memphis soul.
I am going to LOVE this thread! Issac Hayes Marvin Gaye I think it’s why I’m really into Kendrick now. Same vibes.
I saw Devon Gilfillian opening up for Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats and he can write, he can sing, and holy shit can he play guitar. Pretty good soul act for this day and age.
I find myself listening to funk more than soul, but I will forever and always love me some Aretha. She’s incredible.
Just run through the whole D'Angelo Brown Sugar Album and tell me how you can possibly skip a single song.
Charles Bradley got discovered far too late in his life and was gone too soon. remember the first time I stumbled onto his work, felt like I got punched in the gut. I'm a fervent believer that stuff like soul or the blues requires true hardship and suffering to best convey the music and this guy had it in spades, you could read it on his face and hear it in his voice. and an absolutely incredible rendition of a fucking Black Sabbath song
As far as modern soul/funk, just saw St. Paul and The Broken Bones on their new tour. Highly recommend if you're unfamiliar.
When this song was released I thought that D’Angelo was going to be a household name. Also the video was the first time I can remember going damn that dude is hot. It was then that I realized that is possible to find males attractive but still be totally into chicks. Okay, weird sidebar.
I don’t really get the am tuner thing. We play a ton of Motown in the car, my 6 yr old loves it, she also loves nsync and the backstreet boys (spotify plays anything you want)The ones listening to political podcasts now we’re listening to rush lumbaugh or some garbage 30 years ago
