I don’t really think it’s like this at all tbh. There are simply far more species readily available in the Gulf than there are elsewhere in the US. It’s not like regional pizza or bbq where you’re using the same ingredients across the board in differing ways. There are just much more ingredients to be had in the Gulf than there are in the mid-Atlantic, northeast, or northwest. It’s a scientific fact.
For crabmeat, it and Jonah crab are tough to beat. But give me fresh softshell blues over any other crustacean.
I didn't meet her but she was obviously a chef at a food event in Santa Monica and was rocking a "Blue Crabs Matter" t shirt. It seemed to get mixed reviews. Blue crab is within the top tier of any ranking and it gets minimal respect on the west coast.
Growing up with parents who didn’t eat shellfish but then discovering as a young adult that shellfish are amazing was a great part of my adulthood.
Most people probably aren’t eating good salmon. If it just says salmon on the menu it’s probably dogshit Atlantic salmon or farmed.
Those are generally only in the smaller ones. 30+ pounders almost never have them. I haven't had one with worms in probably the last 20 I've caught. Also, you don't eat amberjack medium rare. It's a great grilling fish.
I'd argue that salmon has one of the largest good-bad ranges of most seafood. The farmed stuff is straight trash, both tasting and health-wise. Fresh king salmon cuts like butter and is just fabulous.
Even supermarket coho or sockeye can be pretty fantastic. Atlantic salmon (farmed especially) is basically saltwater tilapia (to rescue arsenal ).
Yeah, I never appreciated salmon until we went fishing out of Victoria, BC a few years ago and caught salmon, rockfish, and halibut. I had eaten lots of fresh Gulf fish over the years, but damn the salmon definitely takes the cake when it comes to taste range from fresh to frozen. Blew me away how good it was fresh. Spoiler These are still better in my opinion.
I will. There just aren't a ton of places in Tampa (that I'm aware of) that offer it. I'm planning on a New Orleans trip in the fall and it'll be on the list.
Oh yea, fried catfish is the best fish when cooked right. If it's not, it can get slimy and I'm not a fan. But when done right, whew boy.
More species than a Calabash Seafood Buffet in Myrtle Beach? The trick is to find the real Captain Bennett.
Love most of my Gulf of Mexico species of fish. My favorite fish to grill is Tile Fish. Very underrated fish to eat. Also fried Snapper throats is one the best things on earth to eat
1. Sockeye/Red 2. King/Chinook 3. Silver/Coho 4. Pink/Humpies 5. Chum/Dog 6. Atlantic Agree completely with your post, top two have a wide gap to silvers, which has a decent sized gap to pinks, which has a big gap to Chum (and you can see by its name was reserved for dog food, not human consumption). And then a huge gap to Atlantic or any type of farmed salmon, just night and day difference between wild and farmed. ~75% of all salmon produced is farmed Atlantic Salmon so most people are probably eating that. And we don’t even need to go down the fresh vs frozen aspect. The amount of posters on here that have had fresh king or sockeye is probably incredibly low.
Automatic here in Birmingham has amazing snapper throats. I always ask people if they like seafood before ordering, though; I have learned lately that some people do not like animals and seafood WITH BONES and therefore I am asking the wrong question, apparently. #dumb
Grew up eating mullet at The Point in Innerarity Point. Smoked, fried, backbones, roe, you name it. Good times.
It’s crazy but their fish sandwich is legit one of the highest quality fast food sandwiches readily available
Crab cakes with Dungeness crab are amazing. However I very rarely order them out because a) Dungeness is over $50/lb and b) so many restaurants fuck it up. So my dad and I try to go crabbing every year to get our fix. Last year we caught the limit and made about 20 crab cakes. The best I have ever made. Spoiler
Had what I believe to be a very awkward exchange with a waiter at automatic over these. Waiter: how were they? Me: amazing. Waiter looking me right in the eye: mmmmmm mmmm sometimes I just like to suck the bone. Me: uh ok cool. Waiter walks off, my friend: dude what the fuck?
