Just read an article on ESPN Soccernet about how the EPL's chairmens are meeting Thursday to discuss changes on financial systems, eliminating promotion, relegation, etc. One of the most radical proposals is to create a Premier League Two which would not have relegation and would invite the Old Firm teams in Rangers and Celtic. I am on my phone so I can't link but check it out, some pretty big stuff could be coming.
doubt much comes out of it to be honest the elimination of promotion and relegation would cause several teams to cease operations i would think
I saw this the other day and forgot to link it here. I am pretty sure it was an article by Jim White. I found it: http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/football/jim-white/article/14041/ I agree with White on this issue.
A two tier premier league would be pretty cool and I can see the second league being 22-24 teams if Rangers and Celtic came. It would be very interesting on what teams would be a part of the epl2 and what criteria they would need to be a member. What would happen to some historical clubs like Leeds and Milwall?
Chilean, didn't read your article but the one I am talking about is on ESPN soccernet and is on the top right corner of the page.
That is the problem. How do you determine who would be in the top 2 leagues and who wouldnt??? Would you want Stoke City to be there over Leeds?? But then again Stoke deserves to be in the EPL because they qualified by winning so how could you kick them out. This is a bad idea. The depth of the English system is what makes it so good, that a team like FC United of Manchester, made mostly of fans, CAN (not saying they will) eventually make it to the EPL. This would completely kill the lower divisions by keeping all the money at the top.
That is the same thing that Jim White was talking about in the article I linked. How they would create a Premier League Two and there would be no relegation from there to the Football League. You would still have relegation and promotion between the two Premier Leagues and they would also invite the Old Firm to join, but how could you pick the 40 teams?? Millwall and Leeds wouldnt be in it right now, and like Jim White said, there are teams in lower leagues that bring in 6,000 fans to a game right now. I dont like the idea at all.
Apparently Harry Redknapp as well as Martin O'Neill and David Moyes have backed up this idea (or at least for the Old Firm to join English football). http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/10112009/63/redknapp-keen-old-firm-plan.html If they could somehow get the Old Firm to join without doing that stupid Premier League TWo without relegation idea I would love that. Imagine the atmosphere for a Celtic v Manchester United, or Rangers v Liverpool. Would probably detroy Scottish soccer though.
I assume that they would have to finish in the top 4 of the "new" EPL just like everybody else. The SPL would still get their 1 direct (although heir coefficient may go significantly down with the Old Firm leaving) or maybe just have to qualify like the other small leagues in Europe.
You know who wants this to happen? The retards who run teams like Portsmouth and Newcastle that have no fucking clue how to handle finances or make a profit. They just want to make a big enough fuss because they aren't winning and figure this is a sure way to make more money.
