Comedians whining about not being able to say abhorrent shit as "comedy" has really gotten old. It's like right wingers excusing their bigotry bc of "the bible." If you can't do a stand up routine without saying awful shit about groups of people, find a new line of work. Single one person out for their actions? Fair game. "Jokes" about race, religion, gender, and secual preference aren't funny.
Gen Xers really are pissbabies. they're so much more philosophically close to Boomers than Millennials.
It sucks because I love him and my wife went to see him the night after we got engaged before he was so cancelled he got millions to be on Netflix.
Started really slow but the second half was fine. Not his best work but I laughed. He buried will smith and Jada pinkett. And as the internet pointed out- he chose to do this special in Jada’s hometown, certainly not accidental.
I thought he was pretty good for a 50 something rich guy, I appreciated that he leaned into what he is. I groaned at the "identify as poor" joke but otherwise I enjoyed the majority of it.
I hate that Smith slapped him. I think the true villain here is Jada. She emotionally abuses Will it seems.
Turns out the same defense mechanisms that cause you to become a comedian make you a shithead later in life if you make it there.
I didn't watch but I'm not surprised at some of the comments above. I caught him one night a year'ish ago at comedy cellar and I was really bummed out by how much of the material he was working on centered around the predictable "I can't be funny anymore" grievance bs.
I thought it was pretty funny once it got going. I didn’t really see that big of a focus on the cancel grievances. Will Smith deserved all that saved up roasting by Rock. It was petty but that added to the effectiveness.
I think this is true somewhat, but I also feel like he's just straight up trying to copy Chappelle and others because there's a lane for that right now for a mostly 40+ year old audience
So is it just flat out unwatchable or worth watching to at least know how bad it was and have some context for potential future conversations about it?
It's not Brendan Schaub or Whitney Cummings bad as far as a Netflix standup special goes. But Chris comes off as a redundant and bitter old man in this. He's certainly copied the Chappelle playbook of glazing Elon Musk and making trans jokes. I can’t believe he had a year to prep and workshop and this is what we got. He also talks for a weird amount of time about Meghan Markle. This gives me the vibe that like Piers Morgan, Chris got shot down and now just uses his comedy platform to vent about being rejected. What happen to actually writing jokes? We don't need more comedian truthtellers.
I've hung out with Whitney a few times and she's extremely funny/whitty but I've never really loved her standup I don't know how you made it through a Brendan Schaub special
Other than Burr and maybe Santino she probably murdered her set more than anyone I've seen at the store but that's obviously only 10-15 mins. She's really good I'm just not sure an hour+ long special is her niche.
I watched the Schaub Gringo Papi special after the whole Bobby Lee debacle. It's fascinating to watch someone be this bad at something they are supposed to be passionate about. It is legit the worst standup special I've ever seen. I've never met Whitney. But her podcast and latest standup are exhausted and strained. Comedians will tell you how hard they have been grinding with creating jokes and then give the audience 39 year old parrot Facebook boomer memes and think that will play well.
i’m trying to figure out how their paths even cross. like shouldn’t he be at driveline working on the secondaries? explains a lot.
