Lot of examples of this for ppl with whom you come in contact. Won't be possible just to go to work and go home and still be safe. The actions of reckless coworkers will have big impacts on those who continue to social distance.

I think most in here are more so advocating for a serious increase in testing, contact tracing and isolation. That has shown to be incredibly effective in a number of countries.

Regardless, I agree with masks for everyone and common sense social distancing will go a long way. It won’t matter though if idiots are out not wearing a mask and could be spreading it to others unknowingly.

Going to caveat this with I understand that there is under counting, but it a lot of place we didn't see a huge first wave. Like Texas doesn't even have 700 deaths. 15 states don't even have 100. I feel like we are lucky that for whatever reason we haven't seen what happened in New York happen elsewhere. Maybe I'm wrong and Chicago, LA, Dallas will become the next NYC. If so, that will be awful.

I wasn’t suggesting a solution, just pointing out the specific issue of masks and restaurants. Gyms, salons, bowling alleys, etc don’t have the same complications. My question was a simple one that a few waterheads took as some attack on the concept of any loosening of restrictions.

a really helpful way to look at all this is view states individually as some epidemiologist was talking about on twitter the other day, look at the death rates per 1mill by state to better compare to like western european countries. MA has had as bad an outbreak as almost anywhere in the world. IL has had a roughly average outbreak for western countries. CA/TX have done very good so far. on and on. we have had lots of similarly bad outbreaks, everything just got dwarfed by NYC getting demolished.

The CNN poll showed 82% feel the current restrictions are either just fine or not restrictive enough. So, that means that States/Cities which open too early might not be a catastrophe because a huge portion of the population is still going to stay at home and practice social distancing.

I’ve been following this since early in the process (Thanks, TMB!) and realize that IL is a mixed bag. That’s largely due to acting early and what people appear as overreacting. Yet we’re OK and seem to have peaked - big emphasis on “seemed.”

FL has roughly the same case counts and is still going up.

It only takes one moron on a flight to start this all up again and make it even worse. But everyone thinks they won’t be that one person.

And, in many cases, most people can make a choice and minimize contact. Yet “I’m bored” and “I want to eat out” and “I want to hang out with friends” other selfish thoughts take over, ruining it for everyone. Just do what sucks for 2-3 months and we’ll largely be able to resume some normalcy.

    I agree as well.

    I see two truths:
    1. The feds fucked this up royally and didn't put into place all of things required to re-open safely during the shutdown.
    2. We can't stay closed until it passes without plunging the world into complete and total chaos. There's no promise of a vaccine nor for herd immunity.
So unless people think Trump and his crew are going to magically get their shit together out of nowhere, then we need to start coming up with ways to re-open. That means there will be scenarios that are safer but not completely safe and we don't have a lot of choice outside of voting with our pocketbooks and peer pressuring our own social circles.

IMO, mask acceptance seems to be the easiest and likely highest ROI. For that to work it needs to not be politicized like every other god damn thing in this country. I also saw something that suggested outdoor spread is lower than initially thought, so maybe doing outdoor seating or movies in community green spaces, or big open parks, etc are the recreational answer to keep everyone sane.

There are answers that can tank the r0 to at least dramatically slow things down. That's not a perfect answer but I'd take that over plunging the world into mass starvation and a world war. Trump/Fox New's line of "the solution cant be worse than the problem" is wrong when its applied to nail salons but in the greater picture is correct.

Would I prefer the mass testing that was promised when we were asked to stay home until they rolled it out? Of course. But here we are.

Isn't the bold sad? A nationwide testing program was by no means a big ask.

We are opening pretty broadly (hopefully with masks mandatory) one way or another. In a few months we'll hopefully have some medicines that work for the sickest people. In the meantime, I'll be limiting my own exposure and risk points. I'm saying that from a place of privilege. I'm tired of arguing.

I don't accept that your premise should actually be the choice we're facing.

Mass starvation isn't a choice. It's an outcome of the choice we're making. Other western countries are doing far, far more for their people than we are.

i don't want to hear data and facts about the virus distorted to argue for this reopening (a la YouTube video).
Just say this and let's go. Don't distort every article out there or provide examples of doctors saying we should reopen country wide (when all they see is their tiny sliver of their community). Just be honest with yourself - our federal government under this administration is fucking hopeless when it comes to doing what was and still is necessary - either by design or by incompetence.

A lot of Western Europe is slowly opening now. At the very least track their progress and see what works and what doesn’t work. I do agree that the US in no way should be a leader in the opening up sphere right now though.

I will say that it is quite amusing to see the commentary related to differences from country to country though.

Parks, hiking trails, running paths have been open and extremely busy in Oslo essentially from the start of all this, yet all of the covid numbers here have been declining. However, people elsewhere freak out if someone sits down on a park bench or walks along a beach.

Similarly, Norwegian kindergartens and schools have been re-opened in the past week, yet I see commentary from other places that talk about how schools should be among the last places to open. Hairdressers are also open as of this week, with haircuts of course being a point of ridicule in the US and Canada due to the idiotic protesters.

The jury is still out on if the last two will turn out to be good decisions but my point is that there isn’t some agreed upon user guide to re-opening things worldwide and a lot of the decisions will have to be trial and error. If you shoot down everything due to increased risk then nothing will ever re-open.

I’m not deflecting here...there is emerging anecdotal evidence that there may be long term chronic illness consequences for segments of the infected who survive. I realize that consequences pushed out further into the future are very difficult to negotiate in the short term. But it is another factor that should be considered when planning out the economic re-opening.

i was never really on board with all the closures of this stuff except in extreme circumstances where theres no way to practice social distancing, as in a beach with very very limited entry points. especially now that the data on outdoor infection is pretty difficult in practice and with even moderate social distancing attempts its very low risk.

Defense Production Act could have front line/essential workers fully stocked w masks/gloves/gowns. It could also have labs fully stocked with reagents/swabs/etc. If global competition precludes immediate delivery, US manufacturers could at least be ramping up production of all of those items and retooling their factories if needed. That's not happening.

Maybe the WH gets their shit together and the federal gov't starts doing what they exist to do but at this point it's hard to see. There's no competent federal plan and the entire thing has been left to states to take their own ideological approach.

So while yeah, other western countries are figuring it out, other western countries aren't run by complete and total fucking morons. They also aren't being influenced by 24/7 propaganda outlets convincing 30% of the public that the entire thing is a fucking hoax. For the most part those countries have buy in.

It sucks but our economy is mostly what we bring to the world stage. If we go, we take much of the planet out with us and we have to acknowledge both the human costs and the geopolitical risks that come with it.

We've got to figure it out. Maybe not by May 1st, but soon. And realistically "figuring it out" means like, 25-50% capacity because consumers aren't just going to flood back to applebees because a local mayor told them its safe.

In the Salt Lake metro area about 25% of grocery store customers are wearing masks. At the liquor stores it’s about 15%. Those are both personal observations. I will say that most customers do attempt to maintain social distancing.

Most outdoor activities that allow for social distancing with masks should be available.
