Also I see a real issue with businesses demanding masks, but not handing them out. Police demanding masks, but not handing them out.... Like where are people supposed to get them? Why aren't these businesses and the government handing these out? This just seems like another rule aimed at hurting the poor. Yes I know we should all be wearing masks, but you can't even find them. I'm personally lucky enough have one, but I'm not gonna give people dirty looks because they can't find them. I just think the government should be providing them.
Part of the reason is liability. If I as a store owner provide you with a mask but you still are infected (perhaps even by the mask I gave you) are you going to sue me? Also, the better terminology would be face covering. While an N95 mask is best at preventing the catching of COVID-19, it’s not necessary as we are telling people to wear masks to prevent unknown asymptomatic/pre-symptomatic spreading to others. Everyone can take something and make a face covering. No excuse for that. But I agree that it’s better for the police to be handing out masks instead of harassing people.
Our government is working to completely remove that liability FWIW. Although they're doing it for completely different reasons, to keep employees from suing the fuck out their employers who force them to work.

We live in the dumbest 1st world country by a large margin on the face of the Earth. A lot of poor people don't know how to make their own mask and aren't going to. We live in a country with tons misinformation where people are literally being told lies about this virus. The government needs to mandate masks, supply them and enforce them. Yes you and I wear them, but I didn't have anyone give me a mask I was able to purchase one. Like you gonna die people who need groceries a chance to get them because they're not wearing a mask when the government doesn't supply them and aren't mandating it? They can't find it in stores and don't know how or even if they need to make their own?

If a person is too stupid or ignorant to use the myriad of resources at their disposal to figure out how to rig up a face covering of some kind, even by pulling their t-shirt collar up around their nose and mouth, then they are probably going to be too ignorant to grab a mask from a dispenser when entering 7-11. They sure as shit aren't washing their hands before doing so.
I could see that argument. I don't know, trust me I'm all for enforcing the rule, I just see a couple of issues. It's mainly that our government isn't handing them out and enforcing this shit. Instead cops in New York are straight up beating people up.

If government is mandating specific types of masks, I'd agree to an extent - they should support the public in getting these items. But we can't even manage getting PPE to the hospitals, I sure as hell don't trust any government body to do a full-on effort providing additional supplies the public. The way to go is mandate facial covering of some kind, do a PR blitz of how to find/make one yourself, and empower local municipalities and police forces to enforce the rules. Local government bodies can do more, but I just don't think it's reasonable in this current environment of disarray for any meaningful large-scale effort of supplying the public. Of course, this doesn't take into account the fragmented nature of each region/state/city's handling of this. You're only as strong as your weak link, and we know we have plenty of those around us, so I think the discussion is moot. Us responsible folks will take precautions, the rest of our fellow citizens will lead us all in self-sacrifice to the markets. Praise Wall Street.
