solid. i think it was originally supposed to be a series of 3. but looks like from his instagram that will not be the case.
It’s not as political as GoT. There’s politics in it. The stage setting is political. There more magic it than Jade City. I’m having a hard time thinking of similar comps minor genre spoiler Spoiler The magic is humans use gods as avatars for powers. It’s a war story. It gets pretty intense. It’s a unique magic set up but not very complicated
Yeah kinda. The way I differentiate this and jade trilogy is that jade trilogy could absolutely stand alone without the magic. But will it many the magic feels like a necessity to the plot and wouldn’t work without magic
I gotta stop falling asleep listening to audio books bc I hear stuff but I’m not retaining anything. I usually knock them out while fishing on my kayak weirdly but soemthing about the book and fishing is just perfect afternoon.
My wife and her mother have library cards that give them access to a d load of audiobooks. Kind of cool.
Justin Torres’ novel “Blackouts” has won the National Book Award for fiction. the nonfiction prize was awarded to Ned Blackhawk’s “The Rediscovery of America”
Reading The Passage again. Wanted to read something dark with the changing weather, and I wanted to come back to this after The Ferryman. Cronin is a good writer and storyteller. I like the beginning and lead up to this story, but absolutely love the sudden change in setting about a third of the way in. I don't re-read many books, but this one is worthy. Doubt I'll read the other 2 again but I may change my mind when I finish this one.

Prophet Song by Paul Lynch has been announced as the winner of the Booker Prize 2023. He receives £50,000 and was presented with his trophy by Shehan Karunatilaka, last year’s winner, at a ceremony held at Old Billingsgate in London. Prophet Song, which is Lynch’s fifth novel, is an exhilarating, propulsive and confrontational portrait of a country – and a family – on the brink of catastrophe. Ireland is in the grip of a government that is taking a turn towards tyranny and Eilish Stack, the novel’s protagonist, soon finds herself trying to make sense of the nightmare of a collapsing society – assailed by unpredictable forces beyond her control and desperate to do whatever it takes to keep her family together.
Gallant Knight Havent read it yet - but Damascus Station series by David McCloskey is getting good reviews. Synopsis looks pretty good too. Only two books out, but will be adding them to the list.
Thanks for the rec I’m going to add to my list. Just finished the brothers karamazov so I’m going to be sticking to lighter stuff for a week or two!
Finished the third book of the Red Rising series. I can tell it was meant as the finale but there are more obviously. Does the quality shift in any direction?
The tone and style shift. There are multiple POVs. However it keeps getting better. Although the 4th book is a more difficult read, but worth it
The Guardian had an interview with Hernan Diaz today https://www.theguardian.com/books/2...atic-but-they-were-also-gorgeous-and-gripping
On the second book of the Box 88 series based on reading the board. Really great page turners. As an old man I appreciate all the 80's/90's flashbacks.
I feel like 60% of the books I read have the word supercilious in them. A word I have never heard spoken out loud in my entire life.
Dang. Really will have to bump it up Have you read Kennedy 35 yet? My To read list is becoming unmanageable.
Yep I liked it as well. Apparently the Box series was planned as 3, but from his social media it looks like he’s going to keep writing them. my thriftbooks obsession is becoming unmanageable. I’ve read like 150 this year, with probably 90% being from thriftbooks, and I easily have another 100 that I’ve bought from them that I haven’t read yet
I need to check thrift books. Missing one book of chronicles of narnia and just need a cheap edition. Also need three to complete my dark tower set, those may not be as cheap/abundant though
picked up an autographed copy of Blackouts by Justin Torres at lunch today love my indie store so much
Psycho shit A writer has been dropped by her agent and publisher after she posted a slew of reviews from fake accounts on book-ranking site Goodreads. Cait Corrain, whose book Crown of Starlight was due to be published in May next year, posted on X to apologise for her behaviour. “I boosted the rating of my book, bombed the ratings of several fellow debut authors, and left reviews that ranged from kind of mean to downright abusive,” she tweeted. Corrain’s US publisher Del Rey, an imprint of Penguin Random House, stated on Monday that it was “aware of the ongoing discussion” about the author. Crown of Starlight “is no longer on our 2024 publishing schedule”, it said. Though it was initially unclear whether this meant that the book’s publication was being postponed or cancelled, both Del Rey and Corrain’s UK publisher Daphne Press later said that neither Crown of Starlight nor the second book in Corrain’s contract will be published by them. https://www.theguardian.com/books/2...lisher-drops-author-fake-accounts-review-bomb
Lol nevermind what an idiot Canadian author Xiran Jay Zhao first brought attention to Corrain’s suspicious activity on Wednesday last week when they identified a number of accounts that had up-voted Crown of Starlight and left one-star reviews on other debut novels
About 25% of the way through white noise by delillo am I supposed to give a single fuck about any of these characters?
I think you're supposed to think Jack and his academic colleagues are absurd, particularly Murray. I think you're supposed to dislike Babette and kind of hope she falls apart. And the kids are supposed to be the people you're fond of because they grow up in such weird circumstances
