I was annoyed the last few months when I was looking up all this stuff by how many OSU players I really wanted. We could have taken 4 OSU guys in the first three rounds and I probably would have been thrilled.
So as of now: Okudah - Day one starter Swift - Won’t start but will play a ton Okwara - Pass rush specialist Jackson - Likely day one starter
No clue how it will play out, but this seems like by far Quinn's best draft through two days. Legit talent with each pick that fits with the current roster and no WTF picks to this point, even if I wouldn't have taken Swift where they did.
https://www.pff.com/news/draft-cris-collinsworths-2020-mock-draft Collinsworth had Jackson in his first round mock draft
Right, we all would have loved getting to slide back gain a pick and get JO at 5 rather than 3 but he will play and be solid. Swift is better than Johnson and having him will extend his career in this league
Perhaps related, I believe this is the first time since Quinn got here we didn’t take a safety in the third round.
PFF has Okudah (4), Okwara (28) and Jackson (40) all in the top 40. Swift (74) is by far their lowest ranked guy we took, but he was their top RB and that might be an analytics "don't take RBs" thing.
Lack of regular camps and stuff may slow a guy like Jackson from starting day 1, but don't think it will take long
Very true, although him going to OSU for one year and then playing for our staff at the Senior Bowl could potentially help him in that regard. I think the lack of offseason should definitely lower expectations for Okwara, though. He's coming off a broken leg and that position in our D isn't just rushing the passer.
When Jackson grad transferred to OSU from Rutgers, I think many had doubts that a Rutgers player was supposed to fill the open OG slot on the line. Then interviews started coming out of practices and the DL all just raved about Jackson....like "That is a man". Jackson and Wyatt Davis (probable #1 OG in 2021 Draft) proceeded to be the best OG combo I've ever seen at OSU. Just violent maulers.
First time you can look at the first 3 rounds and not pick out a guy who is probable bust and/or a major reach.
Thats right we swapped 6ths didnt gain one. Local connections: DPJ, Willekes, R Williams or Josiah Scott any got a shot at helping us and landing here day 3?
I like Scott but we probably don’t take another DB. I think we could nab Williams in the sixth and that would be a very nice value pick. I like DPJ’s athleticism but I don’t know if I can watch more of him on a team I root for.
I don't think they'd take Willekes after taking Okwara. Not sure on DPJ (so many WRs) and Scott (would they take a back-up nickle CB with fewer picks?). I could definitely see Williams. If they wait long enough for a WR, maybe they take a flier on Cody White in round 6 or 7, too.
I think Williams is the best fit for need obviously and the guy is damn good and durable as shit. Having real ties to Cody would be cool having coached against him since he was a 7th grader through HS then cheered for him at MSU. I just think he lacks the needed speed to create separation in the NFL game
Raquan is an absolute beast, I hope he’s there in round 5. High character player with strong work ethic.
Not sure how I would have felt if the target was Dantzler. He ran Tabor-level slow at the combine, but was really good in college as a man to man CB.
Board reset... QB - Eason, Gordon*, Stanley RB - Benjamin, McFarland, Kelley*, Perine WR - Peoples-Jones, Hill*, Gandy-Golden*, Q. Davis*, G. Davis, T. Johnson, C. Johnson, Proche, Mack, Hodgins, Jennings TE - Harrison Bryant, Hunter Bryant, Okwuegbunam, Parkinson, Moss, Pinkney OT - Wanogho*, Bartch, Charles, Adeniji* IOL - Biadasz, Bredeson*, Muti, Simpson, Sternberg, Kindley, Onwenu DT - Fotu*, Williams, Strowbridge*, Lawrence, Murchison, Daniels* DE/EDGE - Weaver, Anae*, Lynch, Kareem, Willekes*, Robinson*, Hill* LB - Davis-Gaither, Bailey, Quarterman, Bachie, Weaver* CB - Hall, Robertson, Holmes, Pride Jr.*, Scott, Davis*, Victor, Jackson* S - Stone, Gilman*, Brooks, Fuller, Metellus*, Wallace, Cole P - Mann*, Turk, Charlton * - played for North Senior Bowl team
I'd go DT or WR, as well. Fotu and Williams make the most sense as DTs. Strowbridge allegedly was good at the Senior Bowl is similar to Hand as far as being a tweener DT/DE. All those WRs seem like pick your flavor types. DPJ might have the most talent but least production. KJ Hill was awesome at the Senior Bowl. Gandy-Golden is a small-school project but is really big and athletic. Tyler Johnson was really good for the Gophers but doesn't have good measurables. Not sure how they feel about Fromm and Eason, but a lot of people have predicted we take Anthony Gordon as a developmental QB after the Senior Bowl. If Dantzler was the guy were trying to move up for but it fell through, maybe they'd be willing to double dip with Bryce Hall at CB.
PFF also had Okwara as their #28 overall prospect and #4 edge. Also had Swift #1 Rb (although they hate RB so he was only 74 overall)
The PFF pass rush stuff grades never seem real to me. Same with OL grades no matter who is putting them out. Wingo was reciting some line yesterday about Robert Hunt, I think, about how he never missed a single assignment in like four years or whatever.
So DPJ frustrated me to no end at Michigan, but I think he's a great value in the 4th with his speed and athleticism. He's the perfect replacement for Jones opposite Golladay in '21 and I think he'll end up being better than Jones in the long run.
