I’ll lose my shit if we take Askarov I think the Perfetti link is just Osgood/Saginaw and it’s most likely just lazy research. Yzerman is not going to let anything leak it seems
If I'm the GM, do I have the balls to take Askarov? Probably not. But I am super high on him and think I'm in the minority on here who'd actually be happy with that pick.
If you take Askarov, you’re getting an elite goalie. Winnipeg had the best goalie in the league this season and barely made the playoffs. The positional value isn’t there at four. Plus, you’re basically ensuring paying a goalie 8-9 mil a year during his prime. The investment is too high.
Yzerman on his pre draft PC said there are certain players on loan that might spend the year overseas due to uncertainty with the AHL. McIssac is one for sure. Larsson is likely as well. Lindstrom, Rasmussen and Seider could go either way tbh.
And Tampa tied best record last year and won cup this year with a first rd pick goalie with a cap hit over 9. You could say Edmonton has had best forward in league too and hasn't done anything with him too. Normally I'm not a goalie high first round guy, but I have much more confidence in Askarov being elite than our other options at 4. If I was picking 3 I wouldn't consider it
Wouldn't this be a wonderful plot twist if this happened https://www.silversevensens.com/2020/10/1/21458055/lucas-raymond-ottawa-senators-nhl-mock-draft-2020
I’m fine with goalie, but like to see us trade down (not sure if realistic) and take him in the 7-10 range.
If I was in love with Raymond, Rossi, Perfetti, or one of defenseman I would probably have a different take. And to be totally transparent I may just be stubborn that I'm mad we didn't get top 3 after I fell in love with Stutzle as a prospect and am just sulking in not liking another forward
I think mine is Raymond. most people are predicting Perfetti. I’m hoping we make another move before or during the draft. Maybe get another 1st round pick this year.
looking at trade values. Something along the lines of #32, 45, and a later round pick can get us back in the top 13-14. Would you consider it?
If someone that was a top 7 pick on board fell into the range you mentioned, I would go ahead and make a move. This is a very deep draft though, so otherwise I would keep the picks.
Hypothetically, how good does Askarov have to be for it to be worth taking him #4? Would you be happy with him at #4 if you could guarantee he had the same career as Carey Price?
If you take Askarov, you’re also not getting him until 2023 at the earliest. Probably 2024 because he will need a season in GR to adjust to the NA game.
I'm so conflicted on getting a goalie that high. We need play drivers at forward and d so much more. We have a few years to find a goalie. If askarov is as good as indicated, eventually you'll have to pay him a ton of money and I'm of the belief that, in a cap world, you try to build a strong team and then you can have "cheaper" goalies. Sure, he could conceivably drag a marginal team on a deep playoff run, but eventually you're going to need to string together some strong play in front of him or the team will come up short. It's not like Price has dragged the Habs to a Cup... I say all of this while also acknowledging that if we had a better goalie than Legace, we might have had better outcomes 2003-06
I’m not a fan of Askarov at 4 but I’ll talk myself into the pick because he’s dynamic. He’s exactly what you want from a goalie in today’s game. I just think there is better value elsewhere.
I think it comes to how quickly will he be good? We don’t want to help him develop then bounce when it’s time to get paid. Do we get 1-2 good seasons with him while we are good and when he starts to get good?
I wouldn’t take a goalie at 4/5 especially with the level of talent available at those positions. There is something to be said tho with having a top goalie for a decade regardless of his contract. Price, Hank, Vas ...you know you don’t have to worry about the position. They may or may not win the SC but it’s an area the team doesn’t have to worry about and can focus on other areas of development.
Mhm, there's no way those clubs can function without a gate unless the big clubs/NHL just completely subsidize the endeavor which I don't see happening.
Glad he's gone but they could eat his contract another year or two while he is in GR to make it a better buyout. But I'm not complaining I won't have to see him again
He could have been buried in GR (though there likely won’t be an AHL season this year) and bought out later. I assume we are going to be much more active this week than anticipated.
Nielsen made more sense to buyout long term but Abby offers more cap room in the interim. I have to assume this is part one of a bigger plan.
Nielsen also was a better bet to contribute something, Abby was probably the worst forward in league last year. Nielsen contract is shorter too, if they can eat it for two years, in 2022-23 you only have Abby buyout. Do it other way that season you still paying Abby and have Nielsen buyout
Howard, Ericsson, and Abby gone in one off-season. Going to be some openings in Wings fans whipping boy role
