Probably save a lot of it for bad contracts. We are currently like 14 mil from the cap floor. Bertuzzi and Mantha should take up 12 mil or so, and then a goalie would put us over the floor. That still gives us 18-20 mil to spend, but we shouldn’t just spend to spend.
I am still not discounting us making an offer sheet. It wouldn’t be to a Sergachev or Cirelli, but a solid mid tier guy. Like Poluck or DeBrusk.
But I would also consider giving up every conceivable first round pick to sign Barzal to a 7x11 deal.
Toronto has their D with Brodie, STL has Krug now Vegas has to be major favorites for Pietrangelo. Vegas just needs to find a spot for MAF and Wings can take on the cash and get a pick. A 2nd rounder has to be the floor
The more I think about the lineup as we currently stand, the more I think we benefit by rolling with Bert, Larkin and Zadina and then Mantha, Gagner and Ryan. Mantha and Larkin are our two best play drivers, so I think it makes sense to separate them, at least to start the year
I wonder if we claim Johnson and then trade him with salary retention to a place he wants to go. I don’t know why we couldn’t just do a three team trade, but I can’t handle the galaxy brain thinking.
A 30 year old declining Johnson with that contract and getting nothing to take it, seems a bad use of our cap space
I don’t think you’re picking up the theory here. The Wings wouldn’t take the player and his contract. I think the implication would be trading him back to Tampa with salary retained or some other side deal that nets Detroit assets. Nothing from today or past comments from Yzerman leads us to believe he wants a 30 year old with four years left on a contract that is a significant overpay.
Thoughts from the toilet - Steve has earned a really solid B+ so far this offseason. I’m not sure an A is even possible, because in my eyes that will require a team dumping significant assets for a bad deal. I think teams are gun shy after that Marleau deal last season. - So far, we have added three guys on prove it deals (Staal, Ryan and Merrill) that will make us more functional than last year, but should still provide us assets at the deadline. We also finally got rid of E, Howard and Abby, which is addition by subtraction. Even with these moves, we still have the weakest roster in the league at this point in time. - Our first four draft picks were all high ceiling, exceptionally talented players. Doesn’t mean they will reach their ceiling, but long gone are the days of drafting high floor, low ceiling players (the 2017 draft alone cost us a year in the rebuild for that very reason) - There is still a long time left in this off season, so this grade can change for better or for worse, but so far so good. - Lastly, since 2020 will be another brutal year, I thought it would be fun to look at the 2021 lineup, as it stands today. My thought is to only slot players I feel confident make next years roster as it stands today Zadina- Larkin - Raymond Bertuzzi - TBD - Mantha Rasmussen - Veleno - Fabbri Smith - Nielsen - TBD/TBD It wouldn’t shock me if Raymond started in GR, but for now I think he wins an opening night spot on the roster. Adding a 2C will be massive over the next two seasons. Guys like Timashov and Svech will get a chance to make a case to come back in 2021. I think Yzerman likes having some grit so I give Smith an edge over them at this point. DeKeyser - Hronek TBD - Seider TBD - Lindstrom Cholowski and McIssac will probably both have a shot to make the team, but we will add a LD. Wouldn’t shock me if it ended up being Merrill with an extension. TBD TBD Whoever we sign in net this summer will get a multiple year deal. Bernier probably gets dealt this deadline.
Yep. I figured he would need a full year in the A, but if he ends up close to a PPG in a full SHL season, all bets are off
They'd have to eat some of his money. Even for a first that contract is too big for me to want to eat it. Id prefer just stay away from him. He also has a NMC I believe so he could reject it
They can’t afford to retain money. The benefit to us landing him now is he’s a PNW kid, with a big deal. He’s prime for Seattle to take in the expansion draft.
But again, no NHL team wanted him for free. If you're Seattle why would you want him over a guy like Lindstrom or others we would have unprotected. He is a declining player with a big contract with years left on it. I really hope we stear the fuck clear. Now if they want to send us Sergachev rights, maybe we have something different
Turnover on defense plus Greiss for Howard could be a hell of an improvement on defensive side. Much needed because that was abysmal last year
There was such a large gap between us and second worst last year, but replacing the dead weight in Howard and defense with who we've signed i think it puts us in mix with the other bad teams. Offense hasn't really improved unless top guys take a step forward. Bobby Ryan and subtracting some guys make it slightly better. I dont think we see as many games where we look like we don't belong on ice with the opponents this year, but I still think we aren't competing for playoffs.
At this point I would hope we are looking to loan Cholowski. He needs a season in Finland or Sweden to get his game together.
New projected opening night roster Bertuzzi - Larkin - Mantha Fabbri - Namestikov - Zadina Timashov - Fil - Ryan Glendening - Nielsen - Gagner (Svech/Helm) DDK - Hronek Nemeth - Stetcher Merill - Biega Staal Bernier Greiss
