can someone explain this to me like the retard that i am about this?

is the 'play set' just the game then you can swap out the characters in that play set? or when you buy a new character does that unlock certain levels for that character? i am so lost on how that game works but with this force awakens coming out it has caught my attention

DON'T DO IT! Unless it is for kids, don't let it suck you in. I bought the original Disney Infinity for my kid. Biggest mistake of my life. I played it with him for a little while to get him going as he is new to gaming still, just terrible frame rate and camera problems galore. Plus, SUPER expensive buying the dumb characters to play with. You will have to drop $70 or so for the Disney Infinity 3.0 set. Then $40 for the Force Awakens set. Then $40 for the Luke set. Then $15 for every other character you want to play with. There is an open "playground" World of sorts to play with any character in. Then only certain characters work for each individual play set.
