Any of you guys ever had a puppy with parvo? My 7 week old blue merle got admitted last night. He had only been throwing up for a couple of hours and the vet said he was playful and excited this morning and even ate a little food. We're hoping for the best but don't really know what to expect. Any insight will be appreciated. Edit: trying to post a picture of the little guy, but it's not working. I have the imgur app and it's downloaded and has a link, but can't get the image to show up
just got some new harnesses and dog boots for my pit mix. this pnw hiking terrain and frozen snow destroys her feet. THANK YOU for the coupon
Any advice on dog breeds that can handle being alone in the house for like 10 hrs? I work shift work and don't usually get a chance to go home.
Beaux can hold it for 12 hours if need be, but I don't like leaving him at home for more than 8. A puppy definitely isn't an option, but you might want to consider an older dog that is already house trained if you really want one. Little breeds would definitely not be an option either. You could also get a Maine Coon if you just want some companionship. Those cats are awesome and also dog like.
I'd look at an older, more sedate dog. Gus sleeps 18-20 hours a day. We have a dog walker come in every day of the week. With the right dog and a walker, it's doable.
There's a rescue shelter near where I live that has sighthounds (lurchers and greyhounds mostly). I was going to talk to them. I also only work 4 days a week.
One of my dogs got hit by a UPS truck tonight. Guy didn't even stop. Just kept going. A niegh or had to stop to help her. (I live on a dirt road in the country) it seems her hip is broken as she can't put any weight on her back leg and has to scoot everywhere in the house. She's old, Like 13ish so if she can't move tomorrow I'm probably going to have to have her put down. It's a quality of life issue at that point. Thought I would share.
I plan on calling them but its not going to do alot of good. They can't replace her hip. And to add insult to injury, unused to work at a few places that used UPS every day. One thing that one of the guys told me was that if a UPS driver ever hits a dog, just keep driving. Don't stop. So that will be a fun conversation to deal with in a few hours.
Gus just got his first dental... It was 500 bucks with 1 tooth extraction. Is that normal, or did I get robbed?
bout right. Its something like 300+ to put a dog under. Be careful with that. Every time they put your dog under, his chance of waking up significantly drops. They say to only have dogs put under 2 maybe 3 times there entire life. Just an fyi.
Sorry to hear about the pup bturns . When I was growing up I saw our family's black cocker spaniel get smashed by the UPS man. The guy was a major fucking asshole. He basically crushed her pelvis. I will never forget the look in her eyes right after. I could shed a tear about it to this day. It was probably 20 years ago. Keep your head up. Are you going to get another dog soon? I've heard of people doing this--the lady at our vet put her dog down and had another one the next week. Our springer spaniel Millie has had an absolutely nasty kennel cough this week. I've had to sleep on the couch with her cause it gets worse at night. I took her to the vet Monday and have been giving her an antibiotic ever since. Seems to have gotten some better though.
We have 5 dogs. Well, 4 now. I know she wants another Great Dane and I have been telling her that when the older ones time comes, we will get another dog or two. We have one other dog that is not going the best. He gets around but if he makes it another year, I will be surprised. I won't let he get another until his time passes. Its just an empty feeling is all. Happens and its a part of life. At least she was 13 when it happened, not 5. And her memory of being the sweet girl she was will always be with me. She was always the Pup who stayed up with me and slept on the couch while i watched tv after the gf went to bed. I don't have that anymore and that really hits hard. And its really weird to see how our other dogs are reacting to it. She knew what was going to happen at the vet. She knew it this AM when i went in to see her. That look in her eyes of, "its over, and I will miss you" I was trying my damned best to hold it together at the vet. When i finally got her in the car after it had been done i just broke down. spent the next hour digging her hole with our other old dog sitting next to me (hes twelve). He knew that his sister was no longer with us but its strange. He had an idea of what was happening and had a sense of calm that he knew she was better off. Hell, typing this is making tears run down my face. After i buried her, our other dog, the great dane started acting funny. Hes been moping around ever since she went into the ground. He wouldn't even get off the couch to eat dinner, and thats CRAZY. He just sat curled in a ball. Outside when we were doing chores, (i have a farm and he always walks with me when i gather eggs) he just didn't seem interested in our normal routine. He knew something was aloof about the situation and knew something was bothering me. I think when he got inside he figured it out that Sophie wasn't coming back. Dogs really are special animals. Gods greatest creatures. They really are the greatest connection to man. And they really are man's best friend. sorry for the rant, going to go blow my nose now...
I have had my past two vets (one from TN and one from GA) and my GF who used to be a vet tech tell me this.
Don't apologize for the rant. I've had family dogs all my life and losing them was tough. Now I have Maisy who is my wife and I's first dog who is 100% ours who we got at 8 weeks and she is my baby girl. I can't imagine how I would feel if she was gone.
My aunt is a vet and says every time you put a dog under their chances of dying from it go up significantly.
My pup had to go under twice within the span of a month. The second time, she was out for ~12 hours. she never has to go under again.
Fucking polar bears are getting ballsy these days. Also, anyone not familiar with Great Pyrenees dogs, you're missing out on a pretty amazing breed.
