God no. It was $3k (traditional lights that are put up and down seasonally were $1500 + $400 for labor annually for context).

Anyone ever stripped lead paint from doors?

    Or recommendations on paint stripper?

Do you have young kids around? If so, I’d advice against any diy lead abatement unless you have proper gear

Yes I do, a 6 month old who is all the sudden very mobile. I was going to remove the doors and do them off site as they are they my main concern with paint chipping.

I am waiting on a few outstanding quotes from painters but its not a huge job so people are dragging their feet committing to the job.

I’ve noticed the air blowing out of the returns at the rear of my house is noticeably cooler than the front. They are also the furthest from the heat pump and I was wondering if adding more duct insulation would help. Any recommendations on a specific type/brand? Should I look into removing the old duct insulation first or just go over the top for extra?

Did a built in entertainment center and was under the impression they were leaving a space big enough for basically any size TV I wanted (Up to 85" was thrown around). Long story short they lost width from initial measurements and rather narrow the shelves they took space from the TV so now there is barely enough room (maybe .25-.5" clearance) for a 75" with the smallest bezel I could find. I was dead set on an OLED and they only come in 77" which is about 1.5" too wide. A 65" would silly given the size of the room. Waiting to hear back from him today but last night he gave off a "it is what it is" vibe. Big first world problem I know I just don't get why they would think the shelving was more important to stay true to initial estimates than the TV space.

Yea, that will help. How old is the ductwork? If its in good condition still then I'd just add on. If possible would also inspect the runs and make sure there aren't any breaks anywhere pulling in outdoor air.

How much of the ducting are you able to easily access? If the ducting is running through interior/conditioned space, adding insulation isn’t going to fix the problem. If it’s hugging an exterior wall, or in an ice cold attic, maybe the insulation would be better. I wonder if an instant read thermometer at different places in the duct will help you narrow down where the temp drop is happening, could be a good job or an IT thermometer

It’s in an unfinished basement but it goes from standing room to crouching at the year. So it’s in a cold basement.

Could you remove the vents and lay flashlights in the ductwork?
Then you could go in the basement as dark as you can make it and look for light leaks

I need to replace some drop ceiling sections that I had to tear out when redoing part of our basement. Any tips on this? Never really messed with it before. No, I'm not putting up drywall on the ceiling.

As best you can, try and find the spots it connects to something, like the boot at the register, or any plenums where it changes directions. The plastic part under the insulation should have a zip tie securing it to whatever and then the insulation should be taped. Very common for those to come loose though and could be sucking in unconditioned air. If those are good then I'd try wrapping the lines with extra sheet insulation

    Old school, I love it!

As a matter of fact I was able to get access temporarily for an hour yesterday then it decided it didn’t want to hook up to my WiFi. I had my IT work buddy take over the laptop remotely. His response was “let’s let this simmer overnight”. Today I can’t open any Excel or Word docs.

Got window quotes last year that wildly fluctuated. I think mine ended up costing $570/window for 11 windows (2 were small bathroom windows and 6 were tempered picture windows). They were mid-grade for texas, which I understand to be lower-mid compared to everywhere else

Look into window inserts. Unless you like opening and closing your windows frequently could be a good compromise.

Nah its constantly a challenge. I wont lie. But im a firm believer in yelling at children til they learn. Its frustrating. because the best aspect of it is that the heat is coming from the bottom to the top and you can feel it where as the propane only come from the top and you have to position more of them just to get the same effect. Also the cheap propane ones everyone says constantly break and you just throw them out. My friend has a restaurant said theyre all the same. It doesnt matter what they cost they all break and get banged up easily. And youre constantly having to fix the starter or whatever. This eliminated the need to fix or repair etc. the downside is yeah a kid will turn their back to it and melt their jacket lol. But i had a dozen people outside running both on Friendsgiving and Thanksgiving and luckily no one did something silly. The kids loved how warm it is. But once its going itll burn pellets fast. so youll need to have them ready for a party.

Was gifted an EcoFlow Delta 1300 battery by MIL last weekend. Guess I'm set next time the power goes out. Thinking about getting two 100w solar panels just as insurance so I can recharge it if the power is out for more than a day
