If Carlos Polk comes in and doesn't teach anything other than how to do the alligator crawl after a tackle our ST will still be better than last year.
Totally agree on your state of GA posts. Couple unexpected things happened with our QB recruiting that left us in a weird spot. Our dumb coach decided to choose a game manager Jake Fromm over Justin Fucking Fields, who rightfully transferred. We signed a really good dual threat QB (flipped from Ohio State, logically) named Dwan Mathis. In theory, he would sit for 2 years behind Jake Dilfer and be ready to take over. Benedict Fromm proceeded to suck all of the balls in 2019 and then declare for the draft. Dwan Mathis had a brain cyst, underwent brain surgery, and missed the entire year and may not play football again. We signed another 4* QB this class, but probably isn’t the type of freshman who can come in and immediately win anything of consequence. Because Stetson Cumberbatch is clearly not a serious person, we took the best option available. By the way, Stetson Bennett is the fourth of his name. Really. All of this would’ve been avoided had Kirby just chosen the QB with the higher ceiling rather than the higher floor, but he’s conservative as hell.
He sucked all the Ds in 2019 but is still projected to get drafted like 2nd round, no? Adrian Martinez has a thing or two to show him about mouthin' Ds I think there's this new belief in cfb that if you don't have the best QB of all-time every year, your QB situation sucks. I blame shitty Bama fans. Imo Stetson Bennett IV gonna have problems earning trust in the receiver room when it's correctly assumed Stetson Bennett, first of his name, owned several of their ancestors. But that can't be the first time that's happened in UGA history.
I agree that folks overreact and act like if you’re not a Heisman finalist, you must be awful. That being said, Fromm went 5 of his final 6 games this year completing less than 50% of his passes. Dude was real bad. Most projections currently have him in the second or third round. I could see him falling after the combine, though, because he isn’t particularly tall and he has average arm strength. He’s got that folksy southern faux humble religious thing, though, so I bet front offices will love him.
This was a tremendous post and Jake Dilfer made me literally lol. Fromm would probably be our best QB since Crouch.
I wanna get your thoughts on this theory I've had for a while. UGA is the best example of a program that is able to recruit high volumes of NFL potential year in, year out. Part of that being due to location. Part of that being the program's commitment to styling itself after the NFL. That's how you keep getting Easons, Staffords, Fromms, and all manner of other 5* QBs from all across the country. And it comes at the cost of not being able to just play college football. Other teams, with a relatively small fraction of the NFL talent UGA has, are free to recruit and develop in a system designed to get the most out of them in 4 years. So UGA wins a large proportion of their games based on their talent differential alone, but they're also very susceptible to falling victim to Paul Johnson or Mike Leach, who have certain stylistic advantages that are gonna make their less talented team better suited for Saturdays. You implied some idea along these lines when you blamed the UGA coaches not adapting their system to accommodate Fields. If they did, I'm not sure any of us would recognize UGA. Richt, Smart, not sure it matters. This seems written into the foundation of UGA football. But Quincy Carter was pretty sweet there for a while.
I think that’s generally correct with a few minor tweaks. We absolutely dominated Paul Johnson over the entirety of his career, but I do agree that the drop back statue QB, strong running game, and stout defense is the way UGA has been for decades as an identity. For whatever it’s worth, Alabama won a few titles pre-Jalen Hurts with that exact formula. We’ve recruited a decent number dual threat QBs in the past 5-10 years, but they have all failed to develop, likely because we have pro-style QB coordinators and coaches. I also agree that pro style offenses do not maximize points in today’s college football environment. My hope is that this kid from WF will transition our scheme to something resembling what Deshaun Watson does with the Texans. A thrower who will hurt you with his legs. I don’t think our coaches or fans (dipshits) have the stomach for a true running threat at QB, and the top flight recruits sans Fields have rightfully gone elsewhere to develop.
If Helfrich came I’d imagine it’d be some kind of analyst role, have 1-2 years “off”, then get back into coaching. Similar to what some of those guys do at Bama.
Joseph WR corch and passing game coordinator, Helfrich offensive analyst, and Held run game coordinator imo
Where did the Helfrich rumors even come from? The guy is a play caller. It would be weird if he came here to be OC in name only imo.
In the interest of making Oregon Ducks poasters even worse, right pnk$krtcrÿnästÿ? Spoiler Please note how I did not tag them. This is out of respect for the thread
Rooting for Coach O and his honorary Husk and Heisman Trophy Winning QB Sorry not sorry cutig but will be happy for you if you win gbr nfm
Also for our rumored-to-be WR coach/OC/Co-OC former Husk QB Mickey Joseph. Would be nice for LSU to have 350+ through the air and then bring that corch back to Lincoln.
