A bill that would allow single-game betting at selected Canadian establishments has passed a second reading in Parliament, moving it one step closer to becoming law.
The bill, which was tabled by Member of Parliament Joe Comartin, would amend a law that currently prohibits betting on a single sports event in Canada. Presently, bettors can only wager on groups of sporting events in lotteries and casinos.
Under the new legislation, casinos and racetracks would allow patrons to wager on a single event - a development that could send flocks of gambling aficionados across the U.S.-Canada border. Nevada is the only place in North America that allows single-game betting.
It isn't clear how the legislation would affect Pro-Line, a popular sports gambling program run by provincial lottery and gaming corporations.
Comartin contends the bill would severely curtail the amount of illegal gambling conducted in the country, estimating that up to $80 billion is bet on single sporting events in Canada each year.
The bill will now move to a third reading before being put to a vote.
