FRIDAY'S PUZZLE - NEW DAY This puzzle was tailor made for a Detroit native who lived and STL and NYC before settling long-term in Denver. I don't have any Atlanta connection. Spoiler
It's always fun going through when it's your team in a row, got a combined 7.02% in rarity from 3 tiger spots including I think my record a .02% for the tiger/brave Spoiler: Spoiler Tiger/Rockies : Neifi Perez (2%) Tigers/Braves : Roman Colon (.02%) 40 HR : Greenberg (5%)
Missed a couple guesses today, including one that legitimately shocked me: Spoiler Stan Musial hit 475 home runs, but never 40 in a season.
I think about him fairly often for whatever reason. Probably the worst hitter on that super roided up '03 Braves team.
What a disaster. Spoiler First I typed ‘Fielder’ and accidentally clicked on Prince instead of Cecil, then for some reason I saw the Yankees logo, had Mets in my head, and confidently typed ‘Alonso’ it’s early. That’s my only defense
Had a total rarity score of 78 today which I think is my best, 51 of the 78 came from Arenado because I couldn't think of another Rockie/Cardinal for the life of me
Would be great if they could soon track personal stats. Best rarity score, best immaculate streak, rarest player, etc
We are middle row bros. I’m surprised more people didn’t use someone else for the Braves-Yankees, especially on this board.
Pissed i missed yesterday's grid, now catching up on the thread and seeing the Astros were involved again, kids and i were on the road most of day. And being friends with #1 overall pick Matt Anderson in college finally came in handy today ;) Did anyone try Don Baylor today for Yankees (played there) and Rockies (managed there)?!?! Spoiler: we back
Arenado was first name that came to mind, too, but then just remembered the late and great Darryl Kile (RIP)
I missed having a perfect grid thanks to a really dumb mistake. For some reason the first player that popped to my mind for 40hrs for Detroit was Prince Fielder and I was so sure he did it I never thought past that to the more obvious Cabrera. In my mind, Fielder seemed like he played a lot more than two seasons with Detroit.
Smoltz also was the first name i thought of for Det-Atl and the great Doyle Alexander trade, but then thought of this tweet from yesterday which seemed like a safer bet ;)
Rockies killed me. Latroy Hawkins was a totally lucky guess. Was just trying to think of journeymen relievers. Really annoyed I whiffed on Cron. Had a nice rarity score going.
Chalk up another idiot who first chose Prince instead of Cecil and originally mixed up Ray Lankford with Brian Jordan, terrible.
This was by far the easiest one I’ve done for some reason. Names just came to me for all the team ones, I didn’t have to think long at all.
A fun group of teams. Manny Sanguillen was a good player and a legend, and no picture. He's probably the first really active catcher on defense I remember. He chased pitches like Vlad Sr. How is this guy not worth a picture: "Sanguillen was a close friend of his teammate Roberto Clemente. In 1972, Sanguillen, who had been playing winter baseball with the San Juan Senators, spoke to Clemente about accompanying him on a relief mission to Nicaragua. Sanguillen missed the plane because he had misplaced his car key and was totally devastated when he learned the plane had crashed, killing Clemente. Against the advice of Pirates General Manager Joe Brown, Sanguillen insisted on helping to recover the bodies of those who died in the crash. The sight of many sharks swimming in the water did not stop Sanguillen. As Pirates teammate Steve Blass told The Sporting News, "Manny dove from dawn till midnight." So focused on this task was he that he missed the January 4 memorial service attended by his Pirates teammates.[19]"
I couldn’t think of a single SF-Tor and even considered one above but said “No, he didn’t play for Toronto.”
There seems to be a recurring theme of Pirates players that did better things elsewhere. Like, Clemente died, and Pittsburgh collectively decided they can never have nice things ever again.
Wasted 2 guesses on Oak-SF, not sure how i didn't think of Zito first. But still don't know if i ever would've gotten Tor-Pit, Russel Martin is a great pick there now that I see some of y'all's grids. And Jason Kendall was a solid pick for Oak-Pit Spoiler: damnit
I only thought of Brandon Belt due to recently seeing something on twitter in the MLB thread re: him complaining that someone is now using his old locker in SF (or something like that)
