Same, and I fucking hate that about myself.
When I went to Jamaica last year for a week, it was the only time I didn’t take a client call. In part because wifi sucked, and in part because I already decided to leave my old firm and was coming back home to accept a new job so I just didn’t give a fuck.
I officially made up my mind to leave my firm and go parttime/solo when, during my year-end review in 2020, my boss told me, "if you're going to be a partner, it's more than a full-time job -- there are no true vacations where you can really disconnect." Jokes on him, this was immediately before I absconded to Mexico without telling anyone.
Nah, fuck all that.
I have noticed that my writing and work product have significantly improved working 20-25 hours/week versus 40+ hour weeks trying to make my billables.
If I don’t call my clients back and they need an answer, they’ll find it somewhere else.
It’s not a big deal to spend 30 minutes to an hour a day returning calls and answering emails.
My dude I promise I agree with you. Also not a big deal to practice abroad in the year of our lord 2022.
My favorite part:
I will occasionally send some emails when I'm on vacation, but that's about it. I take a lot of vacations too. Probably why I work in the middle of nowhere.
I’ll check emails, but unless something is on fire, fuck taking calls and working all vacation. Being a lawyer sucks enough
If it's not on fire, it better be a settlement call. If not, it can wait until I get back.
My last two vacations were just marking-as-read spam and unimportant emails, but leaving important ones unread, so that I wouldn't come back to 500+ unread emails to sort through.
But I've also had vacations where I sat on the beach with a file folder and notepad.
I’m going to 100% have to respond to emails but I’m blocking off a little time to do that each morning and that’s it.
when i go on vacation i read 0 emails and do 0 work. fuck that.
Time zone will be in your favor.
Going to Italy in the fall for 2 weeks, and I’ve been wondering a lot about how much I can disconnect. Since making partner, the workload has fairly significantly increased, which doesn’t bode well for vacation, but I’ll be damned if I don’t try to 100% ignore work.
Typing this right after logging off after an 8:15 AM - 10:10 PM work day, so jokes probably on me for not working on vacation fml
Really need some of y’all to do plaintiffs PI work for just a few months to see how good you have it with client calls
I think you’d also be surprised.
At only having to answer 3-5 calls a day? Yeah prob
There’s a big difference between a person sending you one case vs hundreds. We don’t really have the option of firing a client for being annoying the same way you can, and they’re a lot more entitled when they pay by the hour. There’s a reason you don’t see a lot of folks jumping from plaintiff’s side to defense and you do see the opposite.
There is never a day where I have only 3-5 calls.
Maybe it’s time to make the switch and join the dark side.
One of my favorite things is fucking with true believer defense lawyers
love calling their clients “your insured” and watching them freak out
and then I’ll just keep doing it
All true believers are the worst.
He can come work with me in the heart of corruption.
lol the two cases ahead of us are also allstate cases, and the one immediately ahead of us is the same in house all state lawyer. he didn't designate any experts in that case either
just called the plaintiffs lawyers on the first case, and they're going to file a continuance.
really hope it ends up that he has to try the #2 case on the first week of the docket and then try our case the second week. my associate and i will just go chill and watch that entire first case.
3 adults and 3 minors rear ended by an uber driver. happy wednesday to me
Just got a case dismissed based on a MTD for which I wrote the memorandum of law.
Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2. Apparently getting gun charges dismissed in NYC is a rare occurrence.
Finally got around to getting my Super Lawyers stuff in and was selected as a "Rising Star" for the region for 2022.
"Congratulations! Now that you've been selected, we'll make your Super Lawyers profile public for only $175 per month (subject to a 7% year-over-year increase) from now until you retire in 35 years! Just enter your credit card information here." - Thomson Reuters
You're still listed in the magazine. I've never paid for shit and have been listed for like 6 years.
Lol yeah have always laughed at the people who spend money on that
Does it help you get clients
You're basically just paying for a backlink to boost your website SEO.
I doubt it. I just got an email saying that I was nominated, and I haven't done shit with it since. I just show up in the magazine every year. Best Lawyers is similar, but they do not post your name or anything unless you pay for it. You just get the email that you were named, and you can nominate/vote for others, but otherwise there's no real advantage unless you pay some exorbitant amount of money.
I am the super lawyer
You are something
I had a comp client tell me she found me on the super lawyers directory. I don't pay for any super lawyer stuff I'm just listed in it. Her case settled a few weeks ago with like $32k in fees so super lawyers is ok with me. That's the only time I've ever had a client find me that way IIRC and I've been on it like 4 years or something
My client’s boyfriend said he is going to take the weekend to “make sure the OCGA is being correctly applied on her case” because they’re upset about a settlement offer. If I’m lucky I’ll learn something on Monday.
OC to me today. I really want to settle our case. I'm going on Maternity leave soon and need to wrap up as much as possible.
Me: Ok, well since you are a fellow new parent, here is my real bottom line on the case.
Me: (gives a legit bottom barrel price to get this case off my desk)
OC: I can get you half of that.
