I watched the first two seasons this summer and now and thinking about reading the books, a little backwards I know. Are the books much more in depth than the series? I want to read the books, but didn't know if I'd be reading the exact same thing that I watched.

Definitely much more in depth. Season 1 and the first book are really similar. Season 2 to book two made a ton of changes. I did the same, watched then read, and I still really enjoyed them.

Books are better and way more detail and important stuff. First season stuck pretty close to the book, second season deviated a lot. You'll definitely need to start with book 1.

Im really that new to ASOIAF but I didnt want to start a thread on this.

Anyhoo - I am in the home stretch of A Clash of Kings. It has taken me a pretty long time to get through the first two books. Mostly because Ive gotten slightly bored because I know the plot for the most part being a showfag and all. Pretty excited to get ahead of the TV show.

However, one thing that is really slowing me down is I still dont have a good grasp of the geography of the ASOIAF world. I find myself stopping pretty frequently to good a map of it, and nothing I have found is all that great.

I just took a really long time to ask:

Is there a generally accepted map, that is large/hi res so I can learn where the fuck all these places are?

    Please and thank you

There is an app that I use for android that has kind of an interactive map. You can zoom in on winterfell, kings landing, etc. It's called "Westeros Map."

Just bought the books. Saw somewhere that there is a certain way to read. Is this true or do i just read straight through?

just read straight through. there is a way to combine books 4 and 5, but most people suggest saving that for a re-read.

For the first time just read straight through.

I believe I read the Dunk and Egg stories before book 5, but I don't remember exactly. Maybe save those for the end because you'l most likely want more, but theres references to the stories in the later books. If you read them all as released I believe it would be AGOT, ACOK, The Hedge Knight, ASOS, The Sword Sword, AFFC, The Mystery Knight then ADWD.

You won't lose a ton if you opt not to read the Dunk and Egg stories, but they'll add fun things that stickout especially if you ever do a re-read.

I've never done a full re-read but I read parts as my ex and RockHardEnis39 read the series and it was amazing how much ore you pick up on. Its all so meticulously detailed.

TL;DR: My recommendation is to read the books in order, nothing special.

Try not to just skim over Book 1. I know I missed a bunch because I had watched Season 1 first and the show and book are really similar to each other, but there is a lot of other stuff in there that is really interesting down the road that I missed on the first read through.

Just bought the book set on Amazon for $13. Should arrive first of next week. I torrenced the e-books but I really prefer a hard copy when I read. I'm looking forward to crossing over into book fagdom.

Yes, although if I had not seen the show beforehand they'd be almost on equal footing

I'm sure you've started, but this guy put together a loose chronological version of AFFC and ADWD. Its loose because he specifically tried to make it so chapters in ADWD don't spoil things that are a surprise in AFFC. He also says he tried to order the chapters to follow the feel of the original separate books.

    http://boiledleather.com/post/25902554148/a-new-reader-friendly-combined-reading-order-for-a

I'd still lean toward reading them the original way.

EDIT: The author intended for that post to not have spoilers, but be wary of links and if you scroll way down the comments. I have no idea if theres anything in the comments but its probably not worth it.
