We have to pick at least one off that's for sure. I don't want to force Buchner to be Quinn or Jimmy.
Rees had a worse day than Lea yesterday. Both were bad, but you can’t win a football game scoring 10 points anymore.
the 2nd and one play action call was terrible. Resulted in a sack and it was pretty much over. Also the red zone play calling seems basic.
How many 3 and outs did we have in the 2nd quarter? We’ve talked about this team playing complementary football on both sides of the ball all season. That quarter seemed like the exact antithesis to that.
We need our deshaun Watson to actually have us win one of these games and open the flood gates in rectuiting.
Maybe we stop trying to be 2012 Alabama now. Would be a good idea considering Bama doesn’t even want to be 2012 Bama anymore. Need to try something totally new. Emulating Clemson and Bama while they’re innovating to the next great thing is not the course of action to take. But yeah, an elite QB certainly helps.
Coan gives me “average college football quarterback from average program that finds a way to start 5 years in the NFL but nobody is sure why” vibes
The only reason I would mind not seeing ND selected is to hear the reaction from Brian Kelly. That being said I can’t believe any fan would not want to be in the playoff. This is why they play the game. Clemson and Bama have far more depth especially on offense but this is why you play the game. ND tripped over themselves early yesterday and then can’t play from behind. Make that FG and then convert that 4th down and score and 24 points is now a 14 point loss and none of this conversation is happening.
Book also deserves a lot of blame. With a handful of exceptions, he refused to throw the ball unless someone was already open, which wasn’t going to happen much. Our receivers are big and strong but not great at creating separation. When they do come open they don’t stay open for long. He needed to anticipate receivers coming open out of their breaks and throw them open. He’s too dependent on his athleticism and it seems like he hopes plays breakdown so he can run around and improvise.
it’s hilarious, in one day kelly went from « not sure we will play in the playoffs if parents can’t be there » to « we played 11 games, won 10 games and two against top 15 teams. One win over the number one team in the country so we should be in the playoffs » he is such a politician
His refusal to throw a 50/50 ball is ridiculous. He did a bit late in the game and it drew flags because their corners were molesting our WRs. In a game where it’s clear you need to score 30+ points, you need to take shots. Throwaways and scrambles for 2 yards are not better than taking risks.
he did it in the first game and it worked, then he got scared. I don’t get it. There were one on ones all game long outside and he just could not let it fly
I’m taking a practical, utilitarian approach to this. We’re not winning our playoff game and will most likely get blown out (if we even get in). What good does that do? We need to recruit better and I think beating another really good but not elite team in a NY6 bowl will go farther in that regard than getting shit on by Bama. I understand that the kids want to play, but then they shouldn’t have collapsed against Clemson yesterday.
I don’t want the playoffs. The outcome is 100% certain and it is bad for the program. Planting a game we can win or opting out are better options. and if we had scored 10 more points in the second quarter, Clemson would have scored 14 more in the 4th.
If we somehow make the Playoff, idgaf if Books throws 5 picks and we lose by 50. I’d rather go down in a ball of flames trying to win the game, compared to losing by 30 playing like our QB sees ghosts.
he’d probably manage ND to 10-2 easily next year though but I guess we can just let the midget from CT do that as well
This is what we were just musing as we enter Ohio, open up everything and throw the kitchen sink at Bama, put in a Davis package, put Tyree and Lenzy on posts all day, etc.
Its the end of Ian Book Eve no matter which way the committee goes, so in a sense we're all winners today.
I’d rather take a 10% chance at a win that changes the program’s complete outlook vs Bama than a 40% chance to beat Georgia in a game recruits won’t remember in 12 months.
Exactly. He hasn’t thrown nearly enough interceptions this year given the type of receivers we have. He has to take risks and give them the chance to use their size and strength to make a play if they’re covered, even though that will result in more picks. I think he might care so much about his stat line and how he’s perceived by the national media that it influences how he plays. Like he wants to be seen as this incredible college QB that is deadly accurate and incredibly athletic, who can run circles around you and ALSO complete 70% of his passes.
That pass that Lawrence threw that the WR made a phenomenal one handed catch to extend a drive they ultimately scored on is a perfect comparison of both QBs. Lawrence threw passes and gave his receivers a chance. Book needs people wide open in a spot to even attempt a throw.
I had that exact same thought, but you’re being kind to Book. Lawrence is much better at every other aspect of the position as well.
Very true. Should have said one of. There was a meme that I saw that reminds me of this, but Trevor Lawrence and Ian Book are both the all-time winningest QBs at their school the same way DK Metcalf and Rodrigo Blankenship are both NFL players.
