I can only speak for myself but the reason for me is that a lot of what is posted is just nonsense. dbl mentioning energy production like he doesn't have a surplus of nikes in his closest. lyrtch acting like he doesn't own anything made in a sweatshop in China. Posting nonsense just to feel superior? No one in this thread has any idea what the price action will be for any crypto in the short or long term. If you disagree with BTC because of some moral issue, that's fine, you can go away in silence. This thread is, however, great for the admin and logistics side of crypto - where to buy, where to store, where to stake, where to lend, etc.
I get that, but when dbl(who is newer in this realm) brings something valid that is concerning, and is jumped because of whatabout reasons, it makes your defenses look like shit
Why does dbl’s shoe collection mean he can’t be concerned about the carbon emissions created via BTC? Or that he can’t be curious about it. That’s some wild connecting.
It’s not valid or concerning. The fact you want to credit his drive by shitposting and concern trolling while ignoring actual articles with actual facts is concerning. And lol at the bias comment. -asks for genuine back and forth -ignores resources on the issue -admits to ignoring responses due to who is responding Tell me more about how you want to actually learn about the issue.
Fwiw, lowering carbon emissions has been a big initiative for Nike for about a decade. Acknowledging an issue and addressing ways to improve it is important. https://purpose.nike.com/carbon-footprint
Please show me, scientifically, why china’s mass carbon emissions ISN’T an issue. And not some random Twitter person.
Literally every critique is met this way. "It's not a real concern and let me post 30 tweets from other fanboys to explain why."
The problem with most of the refutations user15000 posts is that the authors usually acknowledge it consumes a lot of energy, just argue that we shouldn’t care because other things consume more energy which isn’t the most compelling argument I personally don’t care, the world is going to continue to need more power. Saving the planet is about finding a way to generate energy sustainably
Why would I personally show you something that an expert in the space has studied and written about but which you are unwilling to read?
FYI that Bank of America is releasing an inverse Bitcoin ETF called BITI for those that may not be as bullish on Bitcoin I personally view the energy concerns as real and I’m also anti-golf course for the same reasons
I’m a casual observer in this thread. Put what I can into BTC and ETH but scared of losing my ass on the rest for the most part. There is some thick irony in the last few pages. I think we reached the 4th degree of someone complaining about someone complaining about someone complaining about what somebody else is posting. It’s the ultimate rubbernecking, can’t look away thread.
Lol at scientifically prove. Let me get right on writing my dissertation so some internet poster is appeased. Here’s your reading assignment. Do shoes not require energy to produce? Does that energy not have a corresponding offset of carbon emissions? does dbl not have a surplus of nikes? So therefore is there not a surplus of carbon emissions resulting from dbl's obsession with shoes? To bring it full circle my man Phil Knight pioneered cheap asian labor per his book "Shoe Dog." Wonder how his buddy lyrtch views his shoe obsession.
dbl was around when I started perusing this thread about 1.5 years ago. Back then, before BTC's breakout, he would almost exclusively shit on User1500. He also stated many times his BTC doubts and that he was selling at 15k. He's still around. I'm out.
I said I was selling enough to recoup my investment. Everything left is house money and I hope it goes to a bajillions dollars.
Most people in this thread are just looking to make/gamble money. I bought $400 in SushiSwap on Friday because that's what we were getting for dinner. It's now worth $483. Crypto doesn't make sense to me, but I just try and learn and read and listen to as much stuff as I can (while also throwing darts blindfolded). What is the best wallet to have on your phone for crypto? I have Coinbase wallet and it isn't accepted on a lot of the sites I've looked at. I also want to have my BTC sitting somewhere making me money. What's the best wallet for that?
It is certainly an issue in isolation, but it becomes less of an issue when viewed in relation to the environmental concerns of other stores of value like gold, financial markets, etc. Quantifying BTC's power consumption is easier to do than ascertaining the environmental effects of Goldman, Citadel, etc. who run or operate in the financial markets using computers (that consume electricity) and are run by men (who eat meat for lunch, including beef from cows releasing methane into the atmosphere), and consequently that makes BTC an easy target. To be clear, BTC's power consumption is bad and is a concern. But it's all bad at this point, so if it is truly a show stopper for people then they should stick to stocks that closely follow ESG principles, otherwise it's just a form of whataboutism
You have shoes, use a computer, use a cell phone, and eat meat. You can't comment on anything climate related! Amazing.
i was literally asking for people to share the arguments or data behind it before i went to bed because I didn't know and the soft arguments in here were incredibly asinine
Thanks for the reply. Personally, I don't think the greatest defense for the issue is "yea well the stock market does bad stuff too", but to each their own. I will also say that I do have a very, very minor amount of BTC, which were given to me via signing up for a couple platforms. I'm not trying to make this argument in a way that says because it does bad I will not use/invest/own. I'm just saying some of this thread gets very fucking defensive about any criticism over, namely, bitcoin.
I mean, some people in the soccer threads get very fucking defensive about Harry Kane diving all the time. It's sort of who we are as a board, or really, as humans.
and the consensus still seems to be caring about it is pointless because all consumption under capitalism is unethical, which is fine, but mostly misses the scale concerns and the underlying arguments of "we can't measure the energy consumption of X" is just again deflection also the whataboutism claim in a post very literally whatabouting over industries/etc is top tier
Let me ask this to start a normal conversation: Is excessive energy use for a digital good worse or the same as excessive energy use for a physical good?
I wasn't defending BTC's power consumption; it's indefensible in 2021. Nevertheless, people are irrational sometimes, and I just overlook it at this point because I don't think I can do anything about it. Just like I can't do anything about environmental concerns for mining operations. Both will continue to exist whether I participate in them or not.
Its not, ETH network is still processing blocks, just the most popular site isn't able to read it correctly. https://cointelegraph.com/news/client-malfunction-brings-down-ethereum-s-most-popular-block-explorer
A few months ago there was a post about Bitcoin SV being the 'real' BTC. Anyone been followin it? The article had talked about NFT's and other things before I had seen them. Found the article: https://coingeek.com/john-pitts-bitcoin-sv-is-one-of-the-greatest-inventions-of-my-lifetime/
