Spoiler “Moonlight bouncing off that tomahawk was the last thing ol’ seamus saw” crazy I feel the need to spoiler something from an album
Dood is the last in a cycle that Simpson always promised would be five albums deep. He and Sarah had conceived a five-record arc, beginning with his 2013 debut High Top Mountain (named for the cemetery in Kentucky where many of his relatives are buried), that painted a full “metamorphosis of the human soul, from past life to conception, and then to flesh and experience and suffering, coming back to the light or being reborn.” And now he’d like to stop being Sturgill Simpson. “This is the last Sturgill record,” he says, wandering out to the deck outside of the Dojo and rolling a cigarette between his fingers. He spends a lot of time out here when the construction noises aren’t so loud, gazing out into the forest. “I always said there would be five, and I wondered if I’d go back on that. But it really has cemented every step of the way how much I don’t want to carry all that weight. Going forward, I’d like to form a proper band with some people who I really love and respect musically and be a part of something truly democratic in terms of creativity. Not having to stand up there behind my name would allow me to be even more vulnerable, in a way.” He already has a few people in mind, and he’s mulling over band names.
Packing up to head to the mountains today. All these posts have me excited to sit by the creek around a fire and listen to this.
I’m not sure I can think of a better album for this setting. Have some whiskey, a smoke, relax by the fire and enjoy art in its purest form.
I've already cycled to Sound & Fury. It's just Sturgill Simpson all weekend. Got a 3 hour drive tomorrow and my "Sam" will be riding shotgun.
Working with tattoo artist right now to get the Sailor’s Guide album art on my arm as a half sleeve. Been meaning to do it since my twins were born but getting it done now. Still my favorite album of his because it dropped right around the time I had my kids.
As a fellow tattoo guy I definitely would like to see how it turns out. That's a great reason to get that done and it's a great piece of artwork.
kind of blown away by this tbqh. I know many are big fans of his rock and roll productions, but Kentucky bluegrass music is his masterpiece. and the pickers behind him don't hurt.
I listened by and by last night when it dropped but I didn’t LISTEN. On my ride to work this morning i really listened. I was at a stop light when the end of played out rolled into Sam. When music does what that did to me this morning it transcends any other value that can be assigned to it. I appreciate sturgill more tonight than I did last night
Listening to Bomani’s new pod and all of a sudden there’s a five minute convo of him trying to convince Dominic Foxworth that Sturgill is the baddest dude on the planet.
