just apex predators being apex predators not like they’re hanging the whale’s fin on their walls to show off their kill like some other asshole species do
Bro if we didn't trophy hunt these animals would go extinct, we're creating an economy for these towns
Haven’t read the article because I’m a freeloader and not filling up my free monthlies on this, but does it have anything to do with our oceans being shit and them having to figure out other options? Or is it chalked up to acquired taste?
No idea how they arrive at this conclusion, but they’re the experts “Although the predation of blue whales by orcas is gruesome, scientists say it could be a positive sign for the health of whale species in the area. The whaling industry nearly drove blue whales into extinction, and the fact that enough of them now exist to be preyed on by orcas may hint at population growth. “What we could be seeing now is a return to ‘normalcy’ as populations of large whales, and their predators, continue to recover,” Dr. Wellard said. “It may just have been a matter of time before an observation like this was made. Nonetheless, these hunts signal a positive step for both species’ populations.””
Other than the part where he cruised by the aquarium glass and it seemed like he could have smashed it into a thousand pieces if he felt like it
Several great white sharks have been found dead with gruesome injuries. Researchers think a pair of killer whales is to blame. Two orcas named Port and Starboard seem to have developed a taste for great white sharks. Since 2017, eight great white sharks have washed ashore in South Africa, with signs of having been attacked by orcas. Seven of the sharks—typically apex predators—were missing their livers, and some didn’t have their hearts anymore. The sharks’ wounds, as well as recorded sightings of the two orcas, indicated to a team of researchers that Port and Starboard were responsible for the killings, and they believe that more sharks were likely killed by the same pair but didn’t wash ashore. The findings are published in the African Journal of Marine Science.
Port and Starboard out there killing sharks and harvesting their organs is some gangsta shit even for killer whales.
Think I've seen read stuff on this before and the reason it's happening is because they think the orcas are running out of food sources which is super depressing
Seems like the show on this during shark week last year said they thought the orcas were old or injured and the whites were their next food source. On the show the orcas left after a while and the sharks returned
These scientists talking about the largest predation event in recorded history obviously never have been to an R Kelly concert
Naming them Port and Starboard seems like it would be setting up an Airplane! style scenario of trying to spot them at sea
So I just signed up for a free webinar through my university pertaining to the state of south pod orcas in the Salish Sea. It’s for October 13th at 12:00 PT if anyone has any interest. I’ll provide the zoom like once I get it.
