Team was on their way to the Sudamericana Final
Just saw the news this morning. Fuck 2016.
this is probably mainboard thread worthy
Horrendous news. They had an unprecedented run from the 4th division to the top flight and now this. Ugh.
Awful stuff. Before their biggest game
I worry about the survivors too. That guilt will be unbearable for them
For those that don't know much about South American soccer, Sudamericana is the equivalent of Europa League. As broXcore mentioned, Chapecoense is a small team from Brazil that just recently made it to Brazil's Serie A (top division) and had an amazing run to reach the final of the Sudamericana. I wanna say this would be like Bournemouth making it to the Europa League final. Ugh. Awful news.
Thanks for the context
Fuck. Similar to the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl crash in 2011.
PSG have informed FIFA that they will donate €40 million to Chapecoense. Fantastic gesture. (Source: Various)
EDIT: twitter is full of shitty people who make stuff up.
saw where their semifinal opponent is forfeiting the match and asking conmebol to name them the champions so they get the winnings. clubs offering to loan players to them to help get them back on their feet for next year.
sad shit but the sense of community and help in these situations always is awesome
also apparently the argentinian national team took the same plane 18 days ago
That's a video of the team about to take off from Brazil.
This is a really good article (in English) from a Brazilian journalist about Chape:
So them being exempt from relegation has been confirmed? Hope so.
There's tweets claiming that Cristiano is going to donate 3mil to the families of the victims.
Apparently he called Perez and asked the club to match his donation. Think they're raffling off some jerseys from this weekend's clasico as well.
The PSG donation is fake, not sure about Ronaldo; will never understand why someone would make up something like that.
that makes me sad
Plane's fuel supply was enough to fly 1600 miles. Their trip was 1605 miles. Additionally they had to take two laps in a holding pattern before they ran out of fuel (according to a surviving flight attendant). 3 players have survived though one had a leg amputated from the injuries.
Revenue from El Clasico will go to the families of the deceased.
Fuck PSG if a donation doesn't happen. Understandable if it isn't anywhere near the reported 40m.
This one is apparently fake now too. God damn. What kind of shitdick starts these rumors?
I did see a report that numerous Argentinian clubs have offered players for loan as well.
Hoping Umbro decides to make a lot of the their tops and donate the proceeds to the club/families.
UmbroGlobal made an announcement that when they time is right they'll talk with UmbroBrazil and the club.
There were supposedly another 100000 outside to pay respect. If it wasn't that many it was a fuckton. Saw a clip in Twitter.
CONMEBOL has awarded Atlético Chapecoense the Copa Sudamericana!
Ronaldinho has come out of retirement and joined Chapecoense for six months for free. Legend.
OG Ronaldo and El Diego need to join up as well.
When the FIFA video game does roster updates, they've deleted players that have died in the ensuing update (Junior Malanda a couple years ago comes to mind) I can't think of a way to handle this situation that wouldn't receive widespread criticism.
Just don't delete them this time. Seems pretty simple.
Is it purely a money grab or are they sending some of their profits to the families affected? Will hold judgement till I learn more but doesn't look good.
Chapecoense won their Regional title in Brazil. First major title since the accident.
I kinda want one.
Chape playing on Fox Deportes right now in 2nd round qualifying for the Libertadores
I had a split second thought of “O god, please not again” after receiving the notification.
Hopefully the Nacional fans suffer some awful tragedy
