Maybe something like https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hitler's_War
Tremendous list. Like IV I haven’t heard of the last 4.
I do wish there were a couple more that were more round table / light hearted style but I don’t think there are really any more out there
The Ancients is like that.
The Rest is History and In Our Time also are like that
just added two more
lions led by lambs
this is you’re dead to me. They have the host, a comedian or someone in that world and an expert on the topic
The Road to Now is a great topical history podcast by two history professors that are from the south.
They typically interview a historian about either a relevant topic of the day or a subject that can stand on its own. For example, they just did one about the history of corn syrup and sugar and its racist origins. They typically run for 45 minutes to an hour.
Owsley you might like this episode in particular, snakes were apparently used as weapons pretty frequently
Still enjoying ancients but the intro reminds me of the Milf Island theme from 30 Rock
Enjoying bad blood as well
this is a fascinating story
I can’t listen to any more details on that trial
Lions led by donkeys is so much better with Nick. Liam sucks. Francis is also great
Nick's reaction to names #1
"This guy's name is Von Hooker"
Nick - "fuck yeah"
anyone listen to Very Bad Wizards? discussions on moral philosophy through the context of academic papers / movies / tv shows / books. I'll throw it on if there's an author or topic that I really enjoy.
Have also started listening to How To Save a Planet and a couple other climate related podcasts. That one is very NPR-esque and is more storytelling. Energy Gang is a good one that is more technical about different clean tech.
Radio Rental has returned and it sucks. They took a fun concept with interesting stories and managed to ruin it.
I’ve been listening to the Revelations podcast recommended on here. At the risk of sounding ignorant and unenlightened about issues regarding male sexual abuse, I’m having a difficult time buying the stories of at least some of the victims. Or, at the least, buying that they are straight guys who got coerced into gay sex. I know it ‘s bad on some level to stereotype but some of those guys don’t sound exactly “not gay,” and I suspect what the cult leader is really preying on is guys who are at the least bi-curious and in denial.
Slow Burn back w the Rodney King story. Forgot how bad it is w the ads. Seems like theres a break every 5 minutes.
Power: Hugh Hefner has 1 episode out. I enjoyed it and I can already tell I’ll listen to the whole series
Road to Now referenced this one, the SRB podcast. About Russia. It's pretty solid
Is it worse than the invasion of Iraq season? Because somehow I came out of that one thinking it was all just one big institutional mistake
What a hell of a way to die has an episode on the Beaver Wars heh heh
I don't pay for their bonus stuff though
Worse as in the content? Idk, only 1 ep so far. It was pretty much just a primer.
i loved Slow Burn up until the Iraq War season
It's a perfect example of the bumbling empire trope - the greatest killing force to ever exist just sort of falls ass backwards into an illegal invasion.
The first season of Blowback takes a much more anti-imperialist view of the war
and the second season is a great way to learn some Cuban history and deprogram from a lifetime of propganda
Downloaded The Shrink Next Door for my Thanksgiving travels. Any other similar podcasts people have liked (Similar to Dr. Death, Dear John, etc.)
I'm not usually super into those for my regular rotation but I save them for road trips as I've found they're excellent at passing the time.
I havent listened to the podcast, but we're gonna start the show tonight. Looks good.
I know this is very helpful.
I heard on NPR's pop culture happy hour the other night that they thought the pod was way better than the show, so I decided to listen to the pod first and then see if I wanted to give the show a try.
In general, I kind of hate Wondery podcasts, which all feel over produced and corny. But they have great stories.
Counterclock Season 3
To Live and Die in LA
Dead and Gone
Your own back yard
Someone Knows Something season 4
Unfinished Short Creek
Serial season 1
All bingable stories that I’ve enjoyed
The Right Time with Bomani Jones is my favorite sports related podcast. He has such a great way of hitting the nail on the head on topics.
I enjoy Green Light with Chris Long for sports pods.
My sports pods are:
Split Zone Duo
The Right Time
Old Man and the Three
i was on split zone duo until Godfrey wouldn't shut the fuck up about all his coaching/program connections that he has. For CFB, I like Cover 3 but only the episodes without Kanell. It's funny for how much CFB coverage there is, there isn't a podcast I really like.
I think Godfrey is great. My issue w Split Zone was Richard. He’s always come off as a try hard to show how much of a scheme guy he is. But I’ve come around on him.
I like that and Cover 3 for National cfb.
yeah, they both irk me for whatever reason. Not nearly as much as the guys from solid verbal. holy shit those guys are insufferable, especially Dan.
Split Zone is great. Only podcast I’ve ever signed up for a Patreon.
I liked Firebug a lot and I'm not really into true crime stuff like that
Radio Rental this week, 2nd story (~16:30) when he’s talking about plans for V-Day. He’s like “we were really into (eno?) and hammock, so I got her a hammock. I thought it would be fun, something we could do with our friends.”
What is he talking about? I was perplexed just picturing a bunch of friends hanging and laying in a single hammock together. Doesn’t add up.
Started listening to Crime Show and it’s really good.
I don’t know if there is a more annoying person than the producer in Behind the Bastards
eno is a hammock brand. Maybe she got a hammock so they could go out and hang 8n hammocks with their friends?
Each friend or couple has their own hammock. You’d go hang out in a park or hike into some wooded area and chill for the day or camp in them.
On a related note, glad the season is over. I’m just hate-listening at this point. The first story was so dumb. Not even remotely scary or freaky.
I still like every episode. I think it's just the production and the fact that it's story telling versus comedy (other than Rainn's part, which I don't like at all). That said, I agree, the content was much better in season 1. Does anyone know of shows similar or better?
Also, did anyone else listen to Firebug?
Ive begun to sour on that podcast. Robert is a pretty awesome dude, but Ive noticed all his friends try to imitate his speech patterns with the 'um, yeah' awkward pauses.
Sophie does it. Garrison really does it. Idk why it annoys me so much but it does. His cohosts on Worst Year Ever are the worst offenders. Im getting to the point where I'll listen if the topic is interesting, but will skip if not. That podcast use to be a priority for me. Kind of sad
I still live BtB however I cannot stand listening to Garrison when he’s on. His voice and his stupid laugh enrage me.
