Just got done spending a couple weeks there and these are some of the reasons I'm considering (or not) moving there either early winter or late spring. The location from the coast to great ski spots is super convenient with gorgeous drives. Definitely super chill people, just in general one of the friendliest places I've ever visited regardless of where you go in it. I have a buddy that lives in Veneta which is a small town just outside of Eugene on the way to the coast. He loves it and the drive is quick and painless to basically anything you would want/need. As an addendum for any single guys considering the area, though the night life is obviously limited right now with covid, it was absolutely filled with gorgeous 20-30 somethings (as you would expect in a decently sized college town) but still legitimately met some of the coolest/hottest women I've ever been around in my life on what was a pretty short trip. Spent a large portion of the last half of it being shown around local trails by a cute little barista I met at a Dutch one morning (Dutch on every corner is another plus). Can only imagine it being even better during the season with everything status quo.
Interesting thread. I agree with most. Don't live in Oregon, but have visited pretty much the entire state I feel like if you can live in Bend, you should live in Bend. Weather is perfect in summer. Learn how to ski and you will love winter on Bachelor even more than summer. I would move there if my job could allow it If you like smaller communities, Oregon Coast is one of the last beautiful coastal areas that isn't completely overpopulated. I should say parts of it aren't overcrowded yet. Hood River needs to be higher on people's list, but it's crazy expensive too. Downside is it's where Portland people go to hike for like 1.5 miles and then go to brewery in all of their hiking gear and talk about how awesome they are for being so outdoorsy. Absolutely gorgeous, especially once you get near the orchards. Wind surfing is quite fun. A bit touristy is all.
Do you know Dr. John Heiser/Heiser Farms in Grand Island??? He's a good friend of ours, wife worked with him in the ED at St. V's. Great guy.
nah...back when I lived in GI I was a forklift driver for a farm and ranch store distribution center. Didn't get in the medical game until I first moved here
*Bros Also it's really not a great place for 30-somethings who are singles. I get why it may have seemed "happening" enough during a visit, but the nightlife options do exhaust themselves pretty quickly - at least in the sense that you can really only go to the same handful of spots over and over again and encounter the same people each time - and the majority of people over the age of 30 are definitely settled. If you're of age to be mingling with the college and/or just graduated set, none of that matters obviously.
I probably picked up the habit of calling it that from said barista, but fair enough, I can totally see that. 29, but kind of baby faced so I tend to mix in or seem out of place given my actual age in most spots.
from yakima you drive to tacoma to fly out or is there some regional podunk joint? (found a pitch perfect job listing in yakima)
Not Portland related but these Santiam Canyon Fires are getting a little too close for comfort. We're still doing surgery here in Salem and treating burn victims but cases have begun to cancel elsewhere. The wife asked me to water the roof of our house when I get home this afternoon
They closed 126 between Thurston and Sisters, and just announced a full closure of the entire Willamette National Forest.
View from top floor of my hospital this morning doesn’t even really show how orange the sky is right now
The smoke is so bad here. I’m more than 2 hours from any of the fires and you’d think they were right next door
The purpleair website makes it look like Eugene/Springfield is an absolutely miserable place to be right now good football practice weather, go ducks
JFC It got up to 278 here two weeks ago from the CZU fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains and I thought that was miserable.
Yeah it smells like a campfire where I live My parents got the level 3 evac warning yesterday in Clackamas County
Oh, and it's also like historic windy as a motherfucker out here, which is great when a giant fire is a few miles away
was on a zoom today with 3 people from PDX and the entire backdrop was just that haunting red/black color no idea how they were getting any work done
eh portland is relatively normal, it's just windy as fuck and smells like burning they must have been further south
I had the same issue, the iPhone doesn’t capture it. My deck in West Salem is covered with ash like a volcano erupted.
My parents have a giant comical retired person RV that's going to be in front of my house for awhile apparently
where are you and how much did it snow? or do you mean over the next week? they usually get the plows running + sand/gravel the major roads. nothing stuck in downtown portland so idk if that changes the city's plans
What would you do to plan for a once every 4 year kinda thing? (Admittedly it's possible that it's becoming more frequent and that the city gov needs to adjust accordingly, but...)
Is this the main PDX thread? My wife and I debated Toronto area, Tacoma, WA, but after getting her LCSW license accepted in Oregon we're closing on a house in Portland, specifically the Hayhust (saved a ton as well as being very privileged with my wife inheriting a bit of money after her mother passed). We've visited before but I really wanted to not live any farther west than the general Beverton area since we have the financial flexibility now and thankfully we got lucky on a place. The backyard has a full fucking koi pond the previous owners installed which limits what our 5 year old can do, but it is very very nice looking. Still feels very weird as we're probably surrounded by very liberal but NIMBYish neighbors but housing goes super fucking quick and we were only up here for my daughter's spring break period.
Congrats! i grew up around that area so obviously have fond memories of that part of SW Portland. I went to elementary and high school within walking distance of your house probably and obviously spent a lot of time between 16-18 fucking around in the area having fun with friends. SW Portland is (was? no idea what it's like now as this was 20+ years ago) pretty ideal for a young family.
I'm comparing it to Decatur, GA. Decatur is technically a separate city from Atlanta but has some very young well-to-do families and a lot of older people that are pretty cool but still can't quite shake that Boomer mindset, all of this is in a very nice and older neighborhood with public transit which is what I want since I'm trying to intentionally drive less and less. I went to Old Market Pub & Brewery last night and laughed at the boomers who like Unions but still can't shake that "well I grew up poor but I guess technically I have white privilege even though I couldn't rub two nickels together" mentality. My wife did quite a bit of research of the public school system in Portland as well as a few private schools that might be better for our kid who likely has ADHD so we'll have to make a choice. There are definitely younger families around it seems and we're near Gabriel Park which has a ton of new equipment, our realtor was very happy we were able to land on this place.
Atlanta resident. I really enjoy Portland. I had a buddy in Northeast Portland and then moved to St John’s. I enjoyed every trip even if I got puked on at a concert. Very walkable in a lot of areas. Portland>Seattle in my opinion but maybe I had better friends in Portland.
What was the secret white sauce that Pizza Express used to have out for its bentos? Remains a mystery to my friends and I. no exaggeration, the best sauce I've ever had.
I grew up on the east side of portland and I ended up back there, so I wouldn't know I was a portland parks grunt out there for a couple of years so I only know it in that way
I'm starting to prepare for the mostly gray skies for much of the year, but it will be tough to go to the beach and not be able to enjoy a nice hot day with a non-freezing ocean to dip into. I've heard that Cannon Beach is a fun vacation spot. Also I think duc15 lives in Astoria? That seems like a pretty scenic spot.
i miss the days where i'd get drinks and chips at por que no, then walk to apizza scholls, then up to bagdhad theater the good old days
yea I’m up in the north coast in the Astoria area. I love it here so much variety in what you can do. Pretty easy to travel between cannon beach to Astoria
When I was out there, the younger families were great. I was just doing maintenance shit while taking night classes. There is an extremely strong Karen thing out there, fwiw, but I doubt it will affect you much. That playground at Gabrial Park is like a year or two old?
Anybody know if there’s a good way to score a cheap ticket to the blazers finale vs the warriors this Sunday? Never been to Moda. Driving up from Coos Bay with my GF for weekend visit.
John's Market in Multnomah Village is like a beer and wine encyclopedia if you're into that as well The bacon cheeseburger rips too
