Anyone have a 2nd gen Echo? I have 2 first gen that both died like 2 years ago and I just ignored it. Just walked past them collecting dust and called so they are sending me a 2nd gen. Curious if they are worth a shit.
regular, not the plus. I don't use the thing that much and with the fact that mine were way out of warranty I wasn't pushing.
Got it. Can't speak for the regular one but the plus 2nd gen is almost exactly like the regular first gen but with a hub, which is super awesome. Increases functionality a ton if you want to run a bunch of smart devices.
I saw the separate hub. I may buy one if I use this damn thing. It was literally 2 years on a shelf with 2 echos that didn't work. I finally went to clean them and said fuck it, I'll call. It doesn't help that I am addicted to buying bluetooth/sonos shit. so they just lost favor.
I’m just a simple man but I never understood spf ratings on shirts. I always thought the spf rating for a shirt would be “covered”.
Fabric is woven with holes and uva light can get through. Or it's a marketing material. I don't know. Paging guy with dermatologist friend
I don't think it's the physical structure it's the "coating" that makes them "sun proof". That's why you have to be careful washing them. It could also all be bullshit.
Does anybody have a backpack they really like? I've been holding on to the North Face one I got in college (almost 10 years ago now) and it's finally giving out. I don't use it a ton, mostly to throw my dog's shit in when I'm traveling with him and occasional hiking, so I don't want something super expensive. Kind of overwhelmed at the options - Obviously I can just go on Amazon and pick one but was wondering if anyone had any recommendations.
Just go search for last seasons' colors of osprey packs and get one at a discount if you don't use it that much.
This is a good tip. Rei garage or Sierra trading Post usually have plenty of choices of "prior season" (sometimes sysnonomous with "undesirable color") options. I do not use osprey, but they are recommended the most on tmb across a couple threads.
I know many others with Ospreys and they like them. I have a north face that isn't dead yet. Anyhow, two cheaper options. Outdoor brand (Walmart) and Dakine (Steepandcheap is where I found them). Outdoor my kids use for camp overnight half the summer and goes who knows where else the rest of it. Dakine used for school and camp. Quality is great on both. Dakine is going to be flashier in looks if you care about that. Outdoor is going to be pretty plain Jane. Both hold up remarkably well, went through many brands that were shit through the years for them. Dakine will probably be my next purchase because my kids can destroy damn near anything and their backpacks still look brand new after 2 or 3 years. Both are cheap/great value IMO.
Yeah, I have a 50L Osprey that I got for backpacking in Europe for a month. Didn't think of them because they're more outdoors-focused than I need but looks like they have plenty of options for day packs as well.

I have a ~20L pack that has been great, probably paid 40 for it 6 years ago and it has been all over the continent with me.
I got one of these: Amazon link: At wal-mart for under $30.00. It's got a hydration bladder compartment and is really comfortable for what it is. The quality is outstanding for the price. My only complaint is that it doesn't have a hip belt, so I also have a 35L platypus sprinter for short overnight trips and longer distance day hikes.
Yes, we have those as well. Pretty sure mine has a chest strap but pretty sure the bladder is smaller. Agreed on the quality and we bought these because the backpacks held up so well. Honestly thought they would be a once a year purchase and I was okay with that in conjunction with the price tag. It's definitely a quality product.
I have an Alps pack for hunting/hiking and that thing is amazing. They're like Tenzing but significantly cheaper and get pretty universally great reviews. They have several different models that are more hiking than hunting focused, as well.
Yeah, mine has a chest strap but no hip belt. I think that the bladder is only 2L. The platypus sprinter is a different backpack. I see how my post was confusing.
I’ve got way too many packs, but the one I bought when I left California (an osprey) is one of my most used for vacation and air travel. Daily, I use my goruck mostly. It was cheap because it was Black Friday and a less popular color. Still covered by the lifetime warranty but osprey has an equivalently good warranty. The triple aught design and mystery ranch packs I have look even “tacticool”er so i don’t carry them as much. Tom Bihn is a good combination of materials and looking business friendly. I used to not carry a backpack much until I got a comfortable one. Now I keep it with me most of the time. If you’re headed down the rabbit hole, carryology has a review of almost every pack (or similar model) you could ever consider.
I once sent a buddy of mine a set of ninja throwing knives as a "baby present." He didn't open it, and threw it into his briefcase on his way home. At that time, he was flying almost daily and completely forgot he had them on him when he tried going through security the next morning. TSA didn't find the gift as hilarious as I did.
Still use mine from high school... send it in every now and then when the zippers give out, they fix it free of charge.
LL Bean backpacks were the heat when I was in HS. My grandparent got me a black backpack with silver thread that was/is the shit.
There are generally a handful of Dana Design packs on eBay for pretty reasonable prices, too. Big fan.
LL Beans are legit af , my daughter has one and beats the living hell out of it and still holding strong.
i bought the ebags professional slim laptop backpack (I think that’s the name) and it’s awesome i also really like my osprey from rei garage for trips these are my thoughts
Just bought a osprey Porter 46 a couple days ago for like 115 bucks on Moosejaw with their coupon code and free 2 day shipping
Knowing you'll do 100x the research I'm capable of and having taste that closely mirrors mine, I'm looking forward to picking your brain and taking your recommendations on watches in the future. Planning on stepping on the Rolex train in the next year or two.
Bought a medium and a large of these -- material is nice, but naturally I am right in between a large and a medium Basically fuck my life
Need to do the opposite, or grow a few more inches. 5'8 with broad shoulders is a nightmare ordering clothes.
The array is vast. Unfortunately so is my collection of this stuff. Wears like iron and the one problem I did have was rectified for free. Great customer service.
I have this: and a much heavier and larger mat, which is in a barn in my backyard. On nice days, I like to move the net return to my deck, which is pretty easy. Moving the large mat is a nightmare. Having this smaller one is great.
