I know a guy that went to prison for him. That’s my Pete Rose story. No interviews. Respect my decision.
Was in Vegas early 2000’s and I see he’s signing autographs. In line and I’m watching him. He had horse racing betting books all over the table that he was reading and barely looked up when signing autograph. I was telling my wife all about his playing days and then when I saw that shit just said fuck him and we got out of line. Collecting money just to piss it away on horses. Great athlete. Shitty human. Glad he’s not in the HoF.
I think bonds ex wife accused him of domestic violence but not sure what ever came of it. A horses amount of roids and an ultra competitive person probably isn’t a good mix….odds are Bonds is a shit head as well.
Of all the things to hate Pete Rose for, betting on horses is pretty low on the list. Also astonishing that it took seeing “horse racing books” for this revelation of yours.
Baseball HOF has a morality clause. It's vague and open to interpretation. The Hall of Fame notes that a “player’s record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played” should all be taken into consideration
The one real thing Rose and Bonds have in common is that they're both real pricks that hated the writers who vote them in and vice versa, which is no small part of why they aren't in the hall. There are lots of garbage people, including people who helped establish segregation in the sport and people who refused to play with black players, in the hall. And there will be plenty of steroid users in the hall, already are. This is not an argument in favor of Rose, who is a completely unsympathetic ass. I just think it's important to remember that they're inducted by a committee of self-important cranks.
Definitely has a recency bias though. Because they have no problem revering a bunch of old-timey racists, drunks, and degenerates.
And he’s the greatest hitter of all time. Rose should be in because he has a significant career record, but his exclusion isn’t *that* egregious. Dumb comparing the two.
This was like 2001 before he publicly admitted to gambling on baseball and betting on the Reds. There was a time when you didn’t know everything about everything with the internet.
Basically he was an ass to everyone. Anyone who interacted with him doesn't have anything good to say.
It's too vague for my liking. But I don't think any other HOF has a morality clause unless they've been updated. It was an issue when Darren Sharper was eligible a few years ago. He made the semifinals and had just been convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison for rape. But the pro football hof didn't have a character clause
There was a story Mike Schmidt and some other teammates brokered a meeting with Bud Selig about what he needed to do to get reinstated like 20 years ago. It was basically to apologize and not associate with gambling. Then he left the meeting and went to an appearance at a casino.
So how do people think he died? The article I read mentions "no signs of foul play" does that hint that he ended it himself? If that's the case, I'd guess he ended it on accident via his prescription meds.
A lady at work got her haircut into a bob that turned out terrible. A coworker said she got the Pete Rose cut and she started crying. He got sent to HR later that day. Thats my Pete Rose story.
Correct. But also everyone dies from something. He didn't seem in too bad of health in the HBO Documentary released this summer -- which was apparently filmed in June. I'm just curious what the cause of death was, because this one feels pretty unexpected despite his age.
Probably a heart attack Again, 83, clearly didn't take care of himself. Unexpected doesn't really work here.
I saw a comedian’s bit somewhere a long time ago which premise was that the haircut options in China were all just pictures of Pete Rose with one picture of Mo from the three stooges mixed.
we ran into Warren Sapp in Vegas during a bachelor party and he was nice and took a picture with a very drunk member of our party, maybe we caught him on a good day
Probably. Sunday in Tampa the Bucs publicly recognized Tom Brady in the broadcast booth. Warren Sapp, who was in town because UCF played Colorado the day before, was three booths over to the right and very visible, and they didn't even pan over to him once. Sapp likes to be paid for his "recognition." He's a weird dude at times.
I didn’t see it live, but that clip from SportsCenter where Eduardo Perez breaks the news citing speaking with his father and Pete Rose Jr, is clearly broken up about it, and the anchor just totally no sells it without any follow up and goes into MNF promo. Very weird.
