Metro closed tomorrow, fabulous. Guarantee that 395 will still be doing construction even with the thousands of extra cars on the road.
Came to post this. https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/2016/03/15/8e0b2be4-eae8-11e5-b0fd-073d5930a7b7_story.html This is going to be a shitshow tomorrow. #BikeToWorkDay imo
So... this is why - these cables were in terrible shape and Metro dodged a major bullet on Monday morning:
I mean, they flat out said this was the reason why when they called for it. It was a smart thing to shut down for the day. Is it a huge inconvenience for a lot of people? Yeah, but better that than someone end up dying again.
Kind of incredible it took more than a year after someone died because of this, to think "hey, this might be a problem, we should make sure it won't happen again". That's an impressive amount of incompetence, even for DC.
It happened again on Monday. There was a fire, caused by same wiring/cable issue as last year, at McPherson.
Yeah exactly. I mean I'm all for maintenance schedules, and needing to do night/weekend work to keep things running smoothly. I think what needs to happen is an honest assessment of how bad of shape the system is in currently. Seems like there's a lot of stuff that's just pushed aside for lack of funding etc.
That's what today is. Sucks that it happened mid-work week but it was necessary to prevent another accident. I think we're on the same page about it.
This isn't a full assessment, afaik. Just a walk through on the cabling areas that have been causing problems. I'm talking the whole damn system, because it seems management is pretty negligent.
Hey Guys. Somehow just seeing this thread for the first time. Spent a decade in a condo in Logan, then the wife got pregnant and we bought a house in AU Park a couple years ago. Still make it to the old hood for shows at the 9:30 Club etc...from time-to-time. Didn't realize the DC crew was so deep.
Thinking of moving your way. Want to live on my own in the District but that rent is too much. Found some places in AU Park for about $1200 though.
Its nice up here. AU is a few blocks down Mass Ave. so there are lots of grad students (and some undergrads) in the neighborhood. Only a handful of decent bars/restaurants but you can be downtown in 15 minutes on the Red Line. Let me know if you have any specific questions about the area. As I said, I was skeptical until I drove up here a few times when we were looking. Coming from 13th & R I had everything at my doorstep. Now it takes a little time, but I also have a yard, no parking issues etc..
If you like southern rock, atlas road crew at the 9:30 club on June 16th will be really good. Gonna try and make it myself
played football in high school with one of the guys in the band after looking at their page. May try to make it out.
I'm friends with a few of them as well. Used to practice in my house under a different name back in college before they moved out to atlas road and got their name from there They're very good, just finished a couple month tour in Europe and have been playing 250ish shows a year up and down the east coast for the last couple of years. Opening for hootie and the blowfish next Friday. They're on Spotify and have some videos on YouTube if you want to check them out
Very cool. I haven't talked to Dave since high school so wouldn't call us friends or anything but still cool to have an Arkadin moment and know someone!
one of the cranes featured in twitter rant (see below) by buffoon congressman Rod Blum from Iowa now has a 360 degree camera. And if there's one thing I like posting in this thread, it's remote cameras. Crane cam: http://1000maine.com/360/index.html Rant: https://twitter.com/RodBlum/status/712037035314380800?ref_src=twsrc^tfw Rod Blum@RodBlum Washington DC is booming. Tower cranes everywhere. Being built on the backs of US taxpayers. DC needs a recession.
My 30 minute metro ride in the evening took a brisk 145 minutes tonight. I can't wait to see the maintenance plan tomorrow, which apparently is just going to fuck everyone.
Not an option for me. I can't park at the office either, and street parking near it is dodgy, but if they're serious about shutting down lines, I'm not going to have a choice.
I live in Vienna (inherently not a cool kid), leave when it is still dark out for six months a year, and there is no shower in the office (nor would I have any desire to use one if it existed). Plus it's supposed to rain tomorrow, looking at the immediate future. Hard pass.
Ahh, didn't know you were so far out. I bought my place 1.3 miles from the office so that I can easily bike/walk and not have to deal with the metro or buses. It was a great plan until I found out GSA is threatening to move our offices.
I live by L'Enfant, was quite confused when I saw about 400 metro buses and a bunch of people standing on the sidewalk.
Good time to get in before the big Wharf Development opens. I guess I just didn't consider the backside of l'enfant since I always went out on the D Street side when I worked down there.
Stupid question - how is fixing all the rail ties on above ground sections going to solve the problem of metro catching on fire with alarming regularity in underground sections?
There are multiple issues they're trying to fix. This isn't all about the fires. The fires (and the death involved) drew the attention but the rail ties need to be fixed as well.
The fires should be the priority, because that's what makes the system unsafe. The point is, these fixes that are going to seriously degrade metro over the next six months are not the fixes needed to improve reliability of service - that's going to either be given short shrift or require a second set of closures closer into the city core that they're not telling anyone about yet.
It's my understanding that the downtown stuff is going to be the focus of the overnight/weekend service. They can't shut down the downtown lines for weeks at a time like they can for the others.
