Big ass fire in the TX panhandle. Smokehouse Creek Fire at 200,000 acres, 0% contained. Cold front approaching (line of clouds arcing from NE to SW)
Abandoned campfires have started a few fires in Coconino NF this past week. We need more snow before the windy spring weather kicks in
The smoke's all the way up here in ABQ and up to Santa Fe. Footage from over there has been jaw-dropping.
Jasper Canada got a direct hit yesterday, potentially half of the town is gone. California has their first real big one of the year. Looks like eastern Oregon and Washington are peppered at the moment.
Lots of North Cascades NP is under siege right now. They had to evacuate Stehekin: https://lakechelannow.com/level-2-evacuation-begins-july-25-for-stehekin/ I guess you can't really say "it's too early for this shit" anymore when it happens every year. Really cool new normal we got here.
I wouldn't quite call that pissing in the wind but its close, its more just pointless. His yard is mowed down near the structure so he has good defensible space and the fire wont put a lot of heat against his house. The bigger concern is the embers getting thrown off those trees and finding its way into the attic space insulation where it grows and establishes itself inside the house. I would be more focused on sealing up all the openings to the attic space, bird blocking, ventilation, etc.
This is all from a 4 second video of course, if his eves are already enclosed then I would make sure my gutters and roof are clear of leaves or pine litter. I would remove anything flammable from the side of the house as well, most of this should be done year around and before the fire front reaches your house though.
It's outrageously dry in Northern AZ right now. Gonna need a lot of February and March snow to avoid bad summer fires
PDS (particularly dangerous situation) Red flag warning out from NWS Los Angeles for extreme fire weather conditions
Palisades fire is very bad and winds are only getting worse then next 24 hours. From my office in Venice it looked like a volcano erupted about 25 minutes ago. Worse case scenario
Steve Guttenberg currently on KTLA ranting about parked cars blocking evacuation routes edit: people are ditching their cars trying to evacuate and leaving their cars in the way of fire trucks. Guttenberg is out there trying to get the cars moved, gets on the air with KTLA reporter telling people if they're going to leave their car, leave their keys with the car so the car can be easily moved out of the way. Just funny seeing this guy interviewed on the street ranting, then reporter asks him his name and he says Steve Guttenberg. Reporter asks if he's an actor, Guttenberg says yeah, I'm an actor. Reporter says I thought I recognized you
Tonight is going to suck. All of Topanga canyon under mandatory evac as of 15 minutes ago. Now all of Calabasas and a ton of the Malibu mountains under warning. They are being very aggressive on the evacuations for good reason... but fuck that's like another 100k people potentially
At least the palisades fire the wind is pushing it toward the ocean and will eventually run out of fuel. The flanks will be the priority then but it wont have that wind driven fire. (Barring a shift in the wind direction).
Went to help my buddy evacuate his dad in Brentwood (just in case). Wind was insane. Saw multiple big trees topple, 2-3 transformers blow... it's like the apocalypse out there. Saw a view of the back side of the fire line from the valley & it's terrifying... I don't think anyone realizes how bad this is going to be in the morning. The Palisades seems to be totally gone
