What is the consensus on this Wesley Morris guy? I don’t know anything about him but he made me pretty uncomfortable while discussing Burt Reynold’s career.
I think I used to like him. He is a movie critic for The NY Times maybe? Worked for Grantland for a little bit.
he won a pulitzer for film criticism hes great on pods, but haven't listened to the burt reynolds thing yet
I’m not as anti Simmons as others ITT. He has some very mediocre takes but he’s done a lot of cool shit and built some platforms that produce content I enjoy so if he goes on with his dad and rambles about baseball I just ignore it.
Has the Andrew “the giant” Luck schtick ever been funny? Why are they still doing this? It’s cringe-worthy. Glad the “Guess the lines” and “Parent Corner” with Cousin Sal is back though. Definitely my favorite Ringer pod. Although Russillo’s new pod will probably give it a run for its money.
He’s a smart, gay man who knows movies. He has no issue saying a man is gorgeous or beautiful on any podcast multiple times. He gushed over MBJ in Creed.
Good to know. He clearly knows movies. He started talking about hot boners he gets from Burt Reynolds movies in particular and I didn’t know his deal.
first 37 minutes of the BS podcast and zero mention of the Jaguars. Ignored them when talking about teams that are locks for 10 wins. Ignored them when talking about the Pats loss. Started talking about the refs edit: finally got to it at the 38 minute mark
Simmons used to also write some funny articles and have funny guests. It’s when he started to go on TV and “branching out” that he became unbearable. His sports opinions became nauseating after Deflategate. He is bearable talking about the Celtics as he does wear an analyst hat and I always enjoy his Jacko Red Sox/Yankees. No thanks on the NFL.
I think he's least bearable when talking about the Celtics. I do love Simmons on TV/Movies/LA industry talk, and I like Guess the Lines with Cousin Sal.
was a tweet saying he didn't actually bet on the Vikings midway through their game, and he wasn't joking
i didnt listen to the pod but wasnt it a joke? he had a later tweet revising that other bet. thought he was just making fun of his shitty picks.
No Cousin Sal - Simmons guess the lines pod on Sunday night and IMO the NFL coverage today was pretty absent, which was especially strange considering how many good games there were. Sherman's Winners & Losers article was posted at 11 PM, for example. Usually they post it at the conclusion of the AM games.
Everybody is working round the clock on “How the Celtics can beat the Warriors” articles over at the Ringer
I wonder if the oddsmakers get together and listen to the guess the lines pods and laugh every time Simmons says a line is ridiculous or Vegas doesn’t know who the good teams are yet.
it's insane. he beats Cousin Sal almost every week but him refusing to acknowledge the Jags as a top tier team in the AFC is getting weird.
The Matt Patricia hate is weird. Patricia was the defensive coordinator for two Pats Super Bowl wins. I assume, Simmons believes if Patricia fails as a head coach of Lions he can further claim that Belichick and Brady did it all with a subpar supporting cast. But why?
If I ever meet Bill, I’ll first bond with him over movie quotes I know we both like, then hit him with a roundhouse of “Montana is better than Brady”, and will be prepared to substantiate it.
I think Bill has convinced himself that Patricia was the reason the Pats' defense was bad the last few years and cost them a Super Bowl or two because that makes him feel better than to acknowledge that Belichick dealing away some of the most talented players on that side of the ball without replacing them is the actual reason.
this is my opinion too but before i cap for patricia, i'd like to actually see him be a good head coach. there have been a lot of guys succeed as a coordinator in NE and fail elsewhere.
My comment has nothing to do with Patricia as a HC. I have no clue if he'll be any good. His start has been pretty rough. But Bill's opinion is based on his NE tenure, which kind of defies logic considering Simmons' opinion of Belichick as a god. Pretty sure Belichick wasn't keeping Patricia on as DC for 6 years if he was a buffoon in that role or was doing something different from what Belichick wanted done.
I actually prefer a sports commentator to acknowledge that he is a fan of teams and will be a homer. But Bill became significantly less enjoyable once he started asserting his favored personal narratives as gospel. Maybe Simmons always did that, and I just didn't notice as much. I loved Grantland. I still like listening to Guess the Lines and various NBA pods. But the self-serious and defensive nature Simmons now takes to his opinions being challenged is off-putting and completely at odds with who Simmons was 10 years ago.
I really like Bill. His mailbags were hilarious and along with his movie quote NBA season wrap ups were his best work. I preferred him as a writer but he became a millionaire and business owner because he delivered good content. I disagree with him a lot more than I used to but he or his site’s content has provided me with far more free entertainment than anyone else the last 15 years. His BS and Rewatcheables podcasts have saved me on many a long road trips or two hour lawn days the last five years.
He needs more people who will disagree and defend their POV on regular pods. Would be happy to argue re rule changes that have both opened offenses and allowed increased longevity of players careers. Not to mention Brady lost 2 Super Bowls, one to a vastly inferior team, and won a few on the GOAT clutch leg of Vinatieri and bonehead Pete Carroll’s playcalling. Would gladly make this case to rile up Bill Simmons.
