BamaNug hotel/AirBnB recs near the space needle? Planning a trip in October for my wife’s birthday. Called the Grand Hyatt but they said they don’t have rooms with a view of the SN.

If you're dead set on that area, look around Lower Queen Anne. Just look at airbnbs with a good view. Probably some good hotels in the area, too.

I lived in Belltown and wouldve recommended that pre-Covid, but it got pretty rough. Think it still is

My favorite part of town is Fremont/Ballard, on the north side.

Not necessarily dead set on that area. Just want a really nice place with some nice views. She is just enamored with the damn space needle.

I haven’t been to Seattle since I was a kid so I don’t remember much. Will def hit up that sushi spot you recommended. How is the Pike Place Market? Remember going to that as a kid and seeing them throwing the fish around

I stayed at City Hostel in Belltown. Prob not nice enough for a wife's bday, but it's a cool little spot. Google says "currently closed" though for some reason

In an elegant building in the urban Belltown neighborhood, this art-focused hostel and art gallery is a 9-minute walk from Pike Place Market. It's also a 12-minute walk from Olympic
Sculpture Park and Elliott Bay Trail.

Funky, basic dorms feature graphic artwork by local painters and free Wi-Fi. All come with shared en suite or hallway bathrooms. Guest rooms might add private bathrooms.

Breakfast and parking are complimentary. Amenities include a communal kitchen, a courtyard patio with a grill, and a rooftop garden with a hot tub. There's also a business center, a 20-seat movie theater and a game room.

Pike Place is still amazing. Mee Sum Pastry has the best crab rangoon in the city. Cloudburst brewing right there is amazing.

The area around it is rough, wouldn't venture too far away from the market.

You can definitely get a good spot elsewhere and just spend a day around Seattle Center (which includes the needle).

BamaNug soulfly do y'all live in Seattle proper? Wife and I were strongly considering moving to Canada (work would have been able to get me a permit) but may be leaning towards the PNW now just to get out of the South and for several other political/non-political reasons. We have a daughter in kindergarten and all three of us visited Portland during Christmas right before COVID hit. I've been looking a bunch at Tacoma since it's close but not quite as sprawl-y and wondering what your thoughts were. BamaNug you in particular grew up in Alabama so I wondered how you adapted to the bit of change in climate. We'd be coming from the Atlanta area and I grew up in Georgia and then lived in Texas for a few years while my wife is from the central valley in California and has lived in several more places than I have.

 not quite. I was born and raised in the butthole of the state (central WA/Yakima to be exact). Fancy grew up in the Seattle area, and BamaNug sometimes decides to reside there.

I’m a strong proponent of Spokane, personally, because it provides a decent sized city and is super cheap to live in compared to the west side. There are several great k-12 schools there. The winters are pretty brutal, though. Bellingham is another great city and right across the border from Vancouver, BC (not to be confused with Vancouver, WA).

I had a friend in Austin when I lived there that grew up in Spokane but didn't have the nicest things to say about it. My wife grew up in Fresno and it reminds me of how most people shit on that city if they're from the Bay Area or LA/San Diego. Mostly I wouldn't strongly consider there because of the winters being harsher and drier, but definitely appreciate the thoughts.

Good for you man. soulfly lives in Hop city, about 3-4 hour drive from Seattle. I've been in Seattle proper for 5+ years now, absolutely love it.

If I could get a work visa/job in Canada (Victoria/Vancouver Island or Vancouver proper) I'd choose that. Socialized health care, British Columbia is stunning, lots of reasons. But leaving the US behind could be a headache and more than you'd want to deal with, I can see that.

Tacoma is fine, Seattle is just so fucking expensive. I love it but it's not sustainable unless you're a high-wage earner -- it's fucking tough man. I'll never leave the PNW, but my days in Seattle proper may be numbered (unless housing prices get more reasonable, which they are starting to).

The climate and heat is one of my favorite things about this part of the US. Never gets too cold, but if you're prone to mental health issues, seasonal affective disorder is all too real. You won't hardly see the sun for several months (which is why I tend to travel a lot during the winter). But, those 4-5 months in the summer it's some of the best weather in the world.

Can't speak too much to Portland, only visited a few times. It's awesome, better high-end restaurants, much smaller and more affordable than Seattle.

Feel free to shoot me a DM man!

Whatever your friend has to say that shits on Spokane is assuredly worse in Seattle. Homelessness is a massive issue.

Personally, Bellingham is my ideal city to live in if I had my druthers (still have a condo there that I’ll unfortunately never get back to because my office sadly doesn’t do any business there :tebow:). But again, you’re going to run into the same issues as it pertains to homelessness.

We're extremely privileged in the money I make plus what my wife has inherited from her mother after she passed (very long story and is also why we're kind of moving now since I'm not as close with my family). I think the most honest question is if you live up the Seattle Metro area, do you actually need full central air conditioning during the peak of summer? Looking at a lot of renovated houses, many of them don't and I'm just so used to the summers being so damn brutal wherever I've lived. I'm aware of what the average high/low is during that time and it being very mild, but wondering with some of the recent heat waves if people are struggling now.

Also aware of the homeless being more concentrated in the PNW given its climate, I saw that in Portland, but it doesn't bother me although it may be a bit different if they're knocking on your door as some of my friends in Austin have told me how bad it's gotten since I moved.

Homelessness, at least cosmetically, has cleaned up a lot in Seattle over the past few months with the new mayor. He's a "tough on crime" dude and has followed through.

But, it's not like they've solved homelessness. They just shuttled everyone to a different part of the state/county, and I'm not naive enough to think it's fixed. They just made it someone else's problem, so bandaid over a bullet wound and whatnot.

Yes. I've noticed a huge increase in temperature since moving just 5 years ago. Summer days in the 90s are pretty regular, there will be a week or so that hits 100.

It's nice once the sun goes down, but can be pretty brutal in August/September at times. Can just get a window unit for those times, tho.

Living in seattle proper sounds like a fucking nightmare to me. Definitely live north of JBLM. That place creates a traffic nightmare on the only highway that takes you north-south. If you’re loaded go live in Issaqua it looked super nice when I drove through, otherwise the tacoma / spanaway area might be good; Olympia is cool too but you’re on the wrong side of JBLM. There’s probably places north of seattle that would work too but I never ventured that far.

I would get a place with AC if you could. Both houses I rented had no AC (and no fucking ceiling fans). Last summer my office got to be in the 90s. We bought some window/floor AC units that did the trick but it’s annoying to deal with. There’s probably 3-4 weeks where AC is required.

Anyone that thinks Seattle weather is a negative (especially thinking it's cold) is way off. The long dark nights can be difficult, but not the weather. WA winters in general are so soft compared to most other northern areas, which is great.

Also legit curious when you last visited Spokane?

I’ve really only passed through Spokane on my way to ephrata/lake moses and that was like 7 years ago. He also wants to be surrounded by libs and enjoy “the pnw weather” so anything central/eastern WA isn’t in the cards IMO.

Agree on the winters, I loved winter in Lacey. Got like 1-2 weeks of snow then the rest of the time it’s in the 40s-50s.

I have lived in Spokane since 2015. I have no allegiance to the city. I can imagine it being pretty awful before then. I'd be curious if they ever came back and spent time in it in the last couple years. I have spent time in about every area in the PNW and I would put South Spokane up against just about any region in any city for economic feasibility, quality of home, standard of living, and lack of weird conservatives

Yeah, it's a completely different weather and honestly part of the country. I get the fear of proximity towards Idaho cults, but I have never really had an issue. Just avoid Spokane Valley no matter what. It's disgusting.

    Outside of Seattle my votes:

    1. Bellingham - affordable relative to Seattle, great food and beer scene, on the water, easy access to San Juans
    2. Chelan County - around Leavenworth but far enough removed from the tourist part. West of Wenatchee, around Stevens Pass.
    3. Issaquah/North Bend/Redmond - if you can afford it
    4. San Juans - dream is to retire on Orcas or somewhere else on the islands, but not sure I'll ever obtain the 'fuck you' money required for that
