it's understandable reacting like that if you aren't familiar with the phrase, continuing to be offended as if he was legitimately accused of being a wife beater after having the device explained is where the goofy dbl'n kicks in, like a child unable to learn from the moral of a fable
What a ride. I think we can all agree though … nobody wants their fake internet username associated with wife beating. That has to be common ground, right?
You're at dinner. You're having a conversation with a few friends. Your friend asks you "Hey when did you stop beating your wife?" as a work colleague that's not familiar with the phrase walks by. Now that colleague thinks you're a wife beater. You're cool with that? I'm not. Find a different way to make your point that can in no way associate me with beating my wife.
It's a fun rhetorical exercise because you can do literally anything with it. "hey dbl, when did you stop participating in that human trafficking ring?"
I’m glad this thread is on this inane tangent and we don’t have to discuss that below average rapper’s murder.
in your hypothetical scenario where people jump to extreme conclusions, all it takes is a misheard word
Look, I'm not saying you're wrong for being ok with potentially being labeled as a wife beater bc of a misunderstanding. If you're ok with that, cool. I'm just not. I'm going to have the same response any time it's said and I'm not changing my opinion that.
$P1 (i think?) started a running "Dbl used to be an Auburn fan" joke on here like 10+ years ago and some people thought it was real and 10 years later are still dumb to the fact it was a joke the entire time. It's actually pretty relevant in this discussion how things don't have to be true for people to believe them.
I would hope my reputation would proceed me in this situation, and an out of context comment wouldn’t make someone think I’d actually do that based on how I carry and represent myself to people. If someone knows me they would quickly understand that would not be the case, if they don’t know me or even do, and would assume it’s true I probably am ok not being friends with them.
I think Biggie shot Tupac because he got tired of him rhyming Hennessy with enemies in all his songs.
Hey dbl when did you stop inventing absurd and irrelevant hypotheticals in order to create the specific context that might justify your overly emotional reaction?
I just told my co worker about dbl from the internet doing this. His response “wow dbl from the internet is a giant piece of shit”
Oh good lord You still have zero idea what the phrase means or the context it is used in after having it explained to you several times
I, like 95% of kids on the planet, liked Bo Jackson. My dad would have beat me if I wore an AU jersey. I did wear one for a picture like 6-8 years ago bc someone donated $50 to some fundraiser we were doing.
I understand the phrase. I also understand the literal meaning of the words and that words can be misunderstood or taken out of context.
No you don't or you wouldn't have crafted that insanely dumb analogy. No one would use that phrase with its intended meaning in the context you provided.
Oh weird I was told it was super common and famous phrase. Are you saying a super common and famous phrase would never been used in a conversation amongst friends?
Damn he sounds like a real piece of shit, as any reasonable person would take this sentence to mean he literally would commit physical violence against his own child over a shirt.
Incites a 7-page meltdown over being rhetorically linked to domestic violence. Voluntarily links his own dad to rhetorical domestic violence. Never change, dbl.
underrated part is that dbl thinks that line is something that is just dropped in everyday convo and not used in a super specific context: bad faith discussion dbl: hey how's the weather looking tonight? you: when did you stop beating your wife? his hypothetical to show how he understands the phrase actually shows how he still doesnt get it
we’ve had our differences in the past but we moved past them. So you know I think you’re a good dude and I don’t want it to appear like I’m piling on, but you see the hilarious unintentional irony of this post, don’t you?
One time I had my boss over for dinner and over the course of our evening, I used the phrase "other than that Mrs Lincoln how was the play?" in response to something My boss fired me on the spot because Presidential assassination is no joking matter
