We've actually had an Admiral as president before. Don't know a lot else about him but Navy Rear Admiral Norman Smith was president 1945-1952. Place was running itself back then...after WWII every college enrollment in America went gangbusters with people coming home on the GI Bill. They had to bring in portables around here to teach classes and also offer stuff on nights and weekends. Also built some kind of temporary housing on N Main Street called the "Carovet Apartments" that married people lived in.
What made Pastides so great was he could be the kind of president rushing the floor at bball games with undergrads while still being somebody that faculty respect as an academic, while still playing nice with the state govt folks, while still raising money from the donors, etc. There's a lot of "stakeholders" and it seems like it'd be extremely difficult to please them all as well as he did but he seems to have the respect of all groups.
