a 6-6 record would almost assuredly include losses to duke and state which would further ratchet up the pressure
Just looking at it as an outsider, it feels like it'd be hard to fire him if he got you back to a bowl game, especially with how last year played out and shoegate.
you're right unfortunately and its a pathetic indictment on the program as a whole that we would accept three years of massive disappointment just because he had one good year against a joke schedule and yes i am including 2016 as a MASSIVE disappointment all things considered. that loss to duke on thursday night was, at least in the short term, a program changing loss. sigh
The instant dropoff really is nuts. We were in the midst of a 19-5 run of games and just smoked GT at home. Five days later the offense fell off a cliff and hasn't recovered since.
offense got up 14-0 in like 2 minutes and then just imploded larry ran a reverse from midfield to khris francis that lost like 20 yards and that's when i knew we were fucked. god i am sad and mad again
Good news is, if I understand trends, which I clearly don't, our generally poor play to open the year just means we're due.
Have it on good authority the kid's a soothsayer and foresaw the Coby/Cole backcourt he'd have to relinquish copious minutes to, this is a time to rejoice and what not
I grew up a huge college football fan, particularly a VT fan. Saw them beat Donovan McNabb at home and go to the title game with Vick. My freshman year is when Bunting got fired and we brought in a legitimate football coach. Flash forward a couple years and we were on the cusp of doing big things. Larry Fedora has been a huge, huge disappointment. I haven't cared about college football since.
Don't know if there will ever be a time when I'm not excited/hopeful for the season, Larry's got one game to not lose me though
Do we have a Charlotte thread? Will be there thurs-sun for the WVU game. Staying in the south Park area and wanted some food + bar recs. Any places to drink near the stadium before the game?
well we've got a projected depth chart at least Spoiler OFFENSE LT – William Sweet LT – Joshua Ezeudu The 6-7, 300-pound Sweet started the first three games of 2017 before an injury ended his season. Ezeudu, a towering true freshman, has impressed with his play in training camp and is expected to play on Saturday. LG - Nick Polino LG – Jonathan Trull Polino played in every game last season, splitting time at guard for the Tar Heels. He's a veteran on the interior and brings valuable experience. C – Jay-Jay McCargo C – Tyler Pritchett A sophomore, the 6-4, 305-pound McCargo started one game last season. The Alexandria, Va. native missed spring ball due to injury, but the coaching staff has high expectations for his potential at center. RG – William Barnes OR RG – Billy Ross This spot remains a toss-up heading into UNC's opener vs. Cal. Ross took the majority of reps at the position in spring ball, but Barnes has the physicality as a true freshman to play immediately, RT - Charlie Heck RT – Mason Veal At 6-8, 310-pounds, Heck started 11 games in 2017 at offensive tackle. Veal is a versatile veteran who has the knowledge play every position up front. QB – Nathan Elliott QB – Cade Fortin OR Manny Miles Fedora named Elliott UNC's starter on Aug. 6 after sophomore Chazz Surratt was suspended for four games for his role in selling team-issued shoes. Elliott was the frontrunner for the job coming out of spring ball. Fortin, a true freshman who missed the majority of his senior season in high school due to injury, has grasped the offense and moved up the depth chart in his first training camp. RB – Antonio Williams RB - Jordon Brown RB – Javonte Williams The 5-11, 210-pound Ohio State transfer started to get first reps two weeks into camp. Larry Fedora said on Monday that it will be running back by committee. Sophomore standout Michael Carter is expected to miss Saturday's opener due to injury. TE – Carl Tucker TE – Jake Bargas Tucker is as much a force as a pass catcher as he can be as a run blocker. Senior Brandon Fritts is out as he continues to recover from a spring injury. Inside Receiver – Thomas Jackson Inside Receiver – Dazz Newsome A steady and reliable senior, Jackson returns from injury and will split time with the dynamic Newsome, who will double as UNC's starting punt returner. Outside Receiver – Anthony Ratliff-Williams Outside Receiver – Antoine Green After a breakout sophomore season (35 catches, 630 yards and six receiving touchdowns), Ratliff-Williams is poised for a superstar campaign in 2018. Green is long at 6-foot-3 and has the speed to take the top off defenses. He will play and play early. Outside Receiver – Dyami Brown Outside Receiver – Roscoe Johnson A true freshman, the 6-1, 185-pound Brown earned a starting spot coming out of spring camp and fought off all competition in the preseason. Sophomore Beau Corrales would have factored in here but is suspended for the first four games. DEFENSE DE Malik Carney DE Allen Cater Malik Carney led UNC with 5.5 sacks last season and is the vocal leader on North Carolina's defensive front. He is one of 13 Tar Heels to receive suspensions for selling team-issued Jordan Brand shoes in January, but his suspension will not begin until next week at East Carolina. NT - Jeremiah Clarke NT - Xach Gill OR Jahlil Taylor With Aaron Crawford out with an injury, the senior Clarke will man the nose tackle spot. There is limited real experience behind him. Both Gill and Taylor are expected to see limited playing time. RT - Jason Strowbridge RT - Jalen Dalton Strowbridge has been a hot name in preseason camp and is set for a breakout year. Dalton is returning from an offseason injury and missed extensive time in preseason camp. DE - Tomon Fox DE - Tyler Powell Fox had 31.0 tackles and 4.0 sacks in 2017. Powell, who is a fifth-year senior, is coming back from an injury. The 6-4, 285-pound lineman can play inside as well, providing some versatility for defensive line coach Deke Adams. OLB - Dominique Ross OLB - Jeremiah Gemmel Ross gets his first chance as a full-time starter in year three in Chapel Hill after playing well late in 2017. Gemmel has flashed promise throughout the 2018 preseason camp. MLB - Jonathan Smith MLB - Matthew Flint Smith takes the reins of the middle linebacker role following Andre Smith's decision to enter the NFL Draft. Flint is a true freshman from Alabama who came on late in training camp after the typical freshman learning curve dating back to spring ball. OLB - Cole Holcomb OLB - Allen Artis Holcomb led UNC with 93 tackles last season and is the key veteran on the second line of the defense, while Artis is a fifth-year senior with game experience at both safety and linebacker. CB - K.J. Sails CB - Corey Bell A starter for 11 games in 2017, Sails led UNC with 13 pass breakups last season. Bell was a standout in UNC's 2017 training camp before suffering a season-ending injury last fall. CB - Patrice Rene CB - C.J. Cotman A junior, Rene started three games last season and played in 11 of the 12 contests. Cotman made significant strides this offseason and pushed Rene for the starting job in training camp. FS - Myles Dorn FS - D.J. Ford Dorn was third on the team in tackles last season with 71 and notched 2.5 tackles-for-a-loss and two interceptions. Ford, who suffered a season-ending injury early last fall, is long and lean with an ability to track the ball in open space. SS - J.K. Britt SS - Javon Terry Britt started six games last season when senior Donnie Miles went down with an injury. In addition to becoming a team leader, Britt is known for his ability to lay a lick. Terry, an in-state prospect, is a true freshman who arrived in June. NB - Trey Morrison NB - Bryson Richardson Both players are true freshmen from the state of Georgia. Richardson emerged as the frontrunner at nickel in spring ball, while Morrison became the hot name in training camp. SPECIAL TEAMS Kicker - Freeman Jones Kicker - Noah Ruggles Freeman Jones hit 9-of-14 field goals last season (51 yard long) and was 37-for-38 in points after. Punter - Hunter Lent Punter - Mats Pokela Lent takes over for Australian punter Tom Sheldon who left the team after the 2017 season. Lent averaged 44.9 yards per punt last season KR - Anthony Ratliff-Williams KR - Dazz Newsome OR Dyami Brown Anthony Ratliff-Williams returned two kicks for touchdowns in 2017 and was named preseason first-team All-ACC kick returner PR - Dazz Newsome PR - Anthony Ratliff Williams Larry Fedora named the sophomore the starting punter returner on Monday, but don't be surprised if Ratliff-Williams get chances this season.
In the south park area I think Dogwood is really good. Foxcroft wine bar is pretty good if you have a mixed (read females) crowd and they have solid beer options as well. Reid’s at South Park is another solid option. Paco tacos is good American Mexican food but there will be people that scoff at the price. Bar scene isn’t too great down that way in my opinion but I’m old and married and limited to grabbing a quick IPA after work these days so I’ll let someone else chime in on that.
HE GUYS I GET TO GO TO CHAPPLE HILL IN A FEW WEEKS . WHAT WAS YOU QBS NAME ? SERIOUSLY YOU SHOULD BEAT US 80-0
Listening to the preview podcast, and I've seen this mentioned before, just thought it was more of a hope than some change we're legitimately making, but it does sound like the expectation is that Larry puts a bigger emphasis on the run game this year
I can't remember a time I've ever been so indifferent about the start of football season. A 9-0 start could go a long way to fixing that.
I mean is it really too much to expect? They're getting the full 'shwo today, emotional equity for the rest of the season's pending
I mean, I wouldn't expect everyone to know the nuances to UNC football, but it's pretty annoying hearing the blanket statements over and over about how we'll be so hurt today because of the the suspensions.
good to see these blitzes hitting home so far, had to laugh at Dalton already picking up the pf and them converting a 3rd and 19 though
Nathan Elliott is struggling at this point in the game. I wonder if taking him out back might be appropriate at this time. If not I think I'll take myself out back.
alright so tank and pray we move on from this shit looks to be the call here, blows my mind that we could somehow look worse than last year, but here we are on the bright side my chili smells really good right now
