No, if the 2022 Georgia team could go back in time and play against NFL teams, how far back in time would they have to go before they were better than the NFL teams? I think we all agree that 2022 Georgia would get killed by the 2022 Eagles, but they would beat the shit out of the 1947 Packers or whatever. So at what point in history would that become a relatively even matchup?
so I did understand your question correctly. Super Bowl era started in the late 60s so I still don’t think a college team could beat a Super Bowl champion.
Probably the 70's imo. Maybe 80's. At some point the physicals size difference for the current college guys is just too much. The average lineman now is 6'5" 315lbs. They'd fuck up little DL from the 70's. In the 1920s, the average offensive lineman was 6-foot-0, 211 pounds. In the 1930s, the average offensive lineman was 6-foot-1, 220 pounds. In the 1940s, the average offensive lineman was 6-foot-1, 221 pounds. In the 1950s, the average offensive lineman was 6-foot-2, 234 pounds. In the 1960s, the average offensive lineman was 6-foot-3, 251 pounds. In the 1970s, the average offensive lineman was 6-foot-3, 255 pounds. In the 1980s, the average offensive lineman was 6-foot-4, 272 pounds. In the 1990s, the average offensive lineman was 6-foot-4, 300 pounds. In the 2000s, the average offensive lineman was 6-foot-4, 313 pounds. In 2011, the average offensive lineman is 6-foot-5, 310 pounds.
The Texans have a lot of guys that will be out of the league after this year. Almost every top 2 round draft pick will be in the league at least a few years.
I think a lot of people are blinded by the "Could Alabama beat the Jags" questions from years ago. No, of course not. This is a completely different question. I don't think it's as cut and dry and many are making it out to be.
He asked about winning the Super Bowl so everything before that is irrelevant. Start with the 70s imo
LT - 6'4" 270 LG - 6'2 255 C - 6'4 250 RG - 6'1 255 RT - 6'3 245 DE - 6'2 245 DT - 6'2 250 DT - 6'4 244 DE - 6'4 275 UGA lines would fuck up those little guys. UGA would be so much faster across the board too. UGA would fuck up the 69 Jets. The physical advantage is just too much.
May not win, but it would make a difference. Especially if a lot of the All Americans are guys who would get drafted this year anyways. If they had a year to just train and practice like pros they would close the gap some.
NFL players in the 60s had other jobs in the offseason. I don't really think there is any doubt that a modern college team would blow those teams out.
been touched on but the line play is where this idea dies. every single OL has to be a player who pans out. if they're a future bust, they're zeroed in on instantly and your QB spends the rest of the night being harassed and abused from that spot. you might have the skill position players to hang around and you might even have a QB who can make some magic but if your OL has even one weakness in it, your offense is toast and this argument is over before it begins.
It’s still paid professionals with zero restrictions on training vs a group who has hourly restrictions on all they can do. It wouldn’t be close.
That's where prep time comes in. If they have a month to get thrown together and learn systems and gameplan, agree it's bad. If they have 6-12 months to prep, I think an NFL rookie team can occasionally beat the worst NFL team. This year's rookie DL would give the Texans OL fits.
this x1000 skill positions would be some separation - the game moves WAY faster for QB though. But OL and DL is where the major advantages come in for NFL. Spread is probably 28.5 Also it's the Bruce Lee "man who practiced one kick 10,000 times" argument when talking about NFL DL. They would kill the college OL all night.
The Texans played the cowboys chiefs and eagles close this year, and probably should’ve won two. I’d say -38.
People always overestimate the disparity between top nfl teams and the bottom. Just like the Texans have guys that won’t be on a roster next year, so do the top teams.
It’s more fair to compare the all-rookie team to the worst NFL team. Going with All-Stars is useless assuming the Texans (or in this season’s case the Bears) are trying since the college All-stars would get destroyed.
lol fred biletnikoff used to rip heaters in between series. '22 UGA would beat the piss out of at least the first 10-15 super bowl champs
Think of the off-season skill training, lifting and nutrition that the UGA players would have over NFL players in the 70’s.
I like that you bring this up because I was just watching the Nebraska and Big XII title games from Colorado's 2001 season, and the offenses look painfully rudimentary compared to today's O's. Not to mention, the way QB's played 20 years ago in college would have them all labeled gunslingers in today's game. You think the Josh Heupel led Sooners are staying within 35 of this year's UGA team? I don't.
'22 UGA would beat the piss out of every SB champ til probably the 90's. Totally different breed of player now.
Look at the size and athleticism of today's players. Go watch Franco Harris highlights and try to tell me he'd stand a shot in hell against the worst FBS player now. IMO, we're talking GT vs Cumberland style beatings with today's UGA squad vs a 70's NFL team. The talent level is WIIIIIIIIDE.
I think you’d have to get into the late 80s before you’d find a Super Bowl champ who could beat 2022 UGA. you cannot overstate how much S&C has evolved. just look at the traditional triple option offense for an example of how speed / strength have changed the game. It pretty much does not exist because LB / DEs that can run 4.75 and weigh 250 are not rare.
Think the all rookie team this year could beat the Texans This isn’t 1 team, this is best of the best throughout college and think it would be close. Offensive line the biggest issue
My thought as well. There are a lot of rookies who start in the NFL. An all star team of them could knock off s bad NFL team.
Bryce Stroud Bijan Corum Harrison Flowers Addison Egbuka Johnston Downs Bowers Washington Johnson/Jones as tackles Skoronski the Michigan and Minnesota center and Luke Wypler on interior and the Florida guard Anderson/ Nolan Smith Carter/ Ikia Bresee/Mazi Smith Murphy/TTU guy Drew Sanders/Jack Campbell/Trenton Simpson at LB who knows about secondary, Brian Branch is a stud and Illinois guy. Think this team could compete.
If we’re talking about them not going through an nfl training camp, just going straight from college to practicing together…it’s impossible imo. Some of those guys are instant nfl studs, but a lot of them were not showing out week 1. Kenny Pickett minus an nfl training camp and meaningful reps could not move the ball on the Texans. The offensive/defensive lines would be a disaster. I don’t see any way. I saw this clip on my timeline recently, obviously he wasn’t playing all-star teams.
There were some times last year where I would have absolutely picked a college team against an Urban-led Jags team. Particularly one lead my Saban.
I remember reading an article where a R*dskins player said their team nutrition consisted of McDonald’s in the 80s
Evolving the question, if you start an expansion team and give them the first 53 picks in the draft to build their roster, plus only the ability to sign UFAs (i.e., no vet free agents, no trading for vets), what is their record in their initial season?
