    My newbie input:

Josh Cab 2016. Amazing. Unbeatable for the price for 10.99.
Josh Cab 2017. What you'd expect with the price.

Had this Volnay for my birthday. Was quite tasty. Happy to get into tasting notes if anyone is interested.

I love Volnay. I think on average it is better than Pommard--and I like Pommard--but its consistently cheaper.

What was the mescal finishing wine that was discussed tonight? We missed that but we love mescal and wine so it sounds interesting.

Teutonic Wine Co...their Rausch wine is an off dry white Merlot with smoke taint. Not my fav but it's funky and very interesting.

By the way CoastalOrange any feedback on the sessions you've attended? We're going to carry this forward regardless of COVID and we're hosting John Lockwood of Enfield next month, which should be great. Just want to make sure we're tweaking and improving where necessary.

I was offered Colgin as a 3-pack minimum for $1200 and I thought that was too steep. WTF is that?

2017 Ovum Sinnerman Gewurztraminer in the glass tonight and it's unreal. One of the most aromatically powerful and complex wines I've ever had from the states, bar none. It's incredibly special.

Got my credit card bill yesterday. 1200 on wine last month including wine club regular shipments was a little out of hand.

A case of rose from our regular winery was a pure covid retail therapy purchase.

nothing compared to some others here but the most I’ve ever spent on wine in a month. Restaurant and other spending way down so making it up elsewhere.

I bought the 24 pack of blind tasting bottles I mentioned earlier in the thread. It is 12 red & 12 white. I drink way more red than white so I expect to do better there but we will see. I started with white and I’m 1/4 so far. I got Fino Sherry and I missed in Alsace Riesling (guessed Vouvray), Sancerre (guessed Albariño) and oaked Cal chard (guessed new world Chenin blanc...really struck out on the oak which gave it an overpowering sweet taste but with a still dry finish). Sancerre is probably my favorite white so missing that was not encouraging but it didn’t have as much herbal/grassiness as I expect from a Sancerre. Fun quarantine hobby though.

I really like that rose rock, had a couple magnums I landed a good deal on a few years ago. That Lemelson is also a solid buy.

I've only had one vintage for comparison but I preferred the Rose Rock over the Arthur from DDO (which I've tasted in many vintages).

It's been a blast so far. Was talking with my roommate about this yesterday and I think the suggestions we would have are:
    - if there are any solid food pairings to go with the wine, send those out a day or two ahead of time

    - maybe give a bit more focus on the process of tasting the wine (ie. What we should smell? What we should taste? How should you cleanse your palate to get back to neutral?)

Most people probably don't need this help but we are both really new to wine and all the complexities of it so it would be helpful to know this information.

Brennan’s in houston needed cash so listed their entire wine cellar online for close to retail

i think so. in tx you have to order food to buy wine direct from restaurants so they included that.

i don't think we could pre-pandemic. governor started allowing to go alcohol sales in march to help restaurants. sounds like it's been a hit so it's here to stay

It’s only been fairly recently that we’ve been allowed to receive direct shipments from out of state wineries. Distributors still hold a lot of sway in our politics. I should probably check and see if “Big Gretch” has made any similar moves though.

In all honesty, I'm not sure. I just know some restaurants are now offering bottles to go along with their curbside service. Shewolf, Magnet, Grey Ghost, etc. All have some unique selections also you don't see at retail much in this area.

Shewolf is also doing somm curated 3 packs based on customer preferences and budget.

Last week Grey Ghost was featuring a Pinot Noir from Goodfellow, who is probably my favorite Pinot Noir producer. I've never seen anything of his at retail or on a list in MI prior to that email.

Should also note that I feel your frustration on the archaic laws and powers of the distributors.

There were bills introduced in early March to end the ban on out of state retail shipments, but I have heard it may not go anywhere due to its sponsor in the house.

I have never found the retail in this state to be well aligned to my taste in wine. Most of my cellar was purchased direct from out of state wineries as a result. But, I would still welcome the opportunity to have wine shipped in from retailers out of state.

That said, retail in the area has improved with a few smaller, funkier places opening since I started buying wine 5 or so years ago.

I got another $50 off $200 from wine.com should I go for a case like I just bought or go with 1-2 bottles?

I have bought at least 3 bottles of every vintage since 2008. If the price wasn’t prohibitive I would have bought more. We have toured the vineyard twice and it’s a great experience.

More and more, I'm spending $ on great producers' wines from humble appellations. These two fit that mold and didn't disappoint. The Dauvissat was a bit more advanced than I'd prefer at this stage, but nonetheless showed very well.
