Made 8 hunts over the long weekend, weather was perfect- should've been rut kicking nicely- I saw 2 yearlings. Total. That sucked.
Anyone read the book The Old Man and The Boy? Its from Robert Ruark. I remember some stuff in there about the quail hunting dying in the south. Quite a shame. Great book btw.
Great book. For those who haven't read it, it's largely a collection of columns of the same name he wrote for Field & Stream.
It won't - some weeks in the early part of the season I'll go through 25k pictures, and it's still great, you never know what the next one will have. I used to use a plot watched which is like a time-lapse camera during daylight hours (burns batteries so rarely put it out anymore). Had a great shot of a long long snake, probably 5 foot rat snake) slither across one of my food plots right after I planted so it was bare dirt. Start throwing out food- see what shows up
Owsley what kind of 16 gauge do you have? How hard to find/expensive are shells? I'm considering giving myself a birthday present if I can find a decent one used.
Don't have a 16. Was in the market for one and just never could pull the trigger because it's such a luxury gun for the reasons you mentioned. The one I had my eye on was an absolutely gorgeous Rizzini. My only double gun is a 28 Beretta which is pretty much a dedicated quail gun.
I have an upland sxs 20 gauge that I was using for dove hunting too. I was maybe hitting half of my shots and if was a long overhead shot I was just throwing shot in the air. Started to get really frustrated and decided to buy a dedicated dove choke for my benelli. It felt like I couldn't miss. I'll take shit in the field for using a duck gun in exchange for a limit any day.
I have an older 870 Wingmaster 12 that has chokes built into the barrels. Have a 26" modified and 30" full iirc. I've killed everything from dove to turkey with that gun. Generally use an old Belgian Browning humpback for ducks these days, though it'll only shoot 2.75".
Its S. Texas bullshit. The hunting culture down there is so gay across the board its hard to describe.
Young JY used to watch Phil Robertson videos long before any of this duck dynasty bs came out. I cant even tell you how excited I was when I found out my grandfather had a humpback I could use just like him.
Hilariously so. Hunt penned animals over feed and dog somebody for not having a specific gun for every game species.
I have more from last night just didn't load them yet, all of the fox, I have been putting cat food out for the last few nights right there. I want him to know where the food comes from. it was funny, was browsing through the vids from last night and there were like 6 of this lone rabbit just hanging then all of a sudden he was gone, next shot was the fox. loving this trail cam
I think I'd like to go dove hunting in Hondo because it sounds pretty sweet and is considerably cheaper than Argentina.
Best way to infuriate those people is to tell them you're only interested in hunting deer that are B&C eligible. They also get pissed if you call their deer their livestock population.
I generally wear a shooting pad because it kicks so much compared to today's guns. Wouldn't trade it for anything.
I went for the first time this last season. I wouldn't discourage someone from going, but I'll probably never go back. It's almost all high overhead shots. Its kind of cool to see wave after wave of 100-200 birds come in, but you have to lead them by a football field. Just not my thing. Ive realized Im much more interested in hunting a tank or a tree line.
Ahhh, The Duckmen videos. I'm going to have to tear up my parents' attic next time I go back and see if I can dig up all of my old Duckmen tapes. Finding a working VHS player to watch them on may be a challenge in itself.
We had a portable tv deal for the car and on road trips I would watch the same two over and over until we were there.
It's kind of dumb, kind of funny... but I know a friend who fits into each of these categories... I fit into a few myself
I'm definitely "it's all about the angle" guy. Have had phases of being a "buy it all bob", I've pulled the noob before and scoped myself - first time I shot the .45-70 jumped up and got me good. I used to be a bad sleeper, but now I'm actually pretty good about waking up early. I also have a few stands that I can sleep until damn near 6 and still be in there by 620 for day break. Definitely the snack master now, my bag is full of shit.
