16-10 is 90 wins. 18-8 would really make me feel good. The Red Sox and Os have 7 games left. Wouldn't mind one of them winning 6 of those.
George Sipple @GeorgeSipple Mike Pelfrey said he's heading to bullpen. Won't be available today. #tigersSep 5, 2016, 1:31 PM
15-10 gets us 90 wins. Fifththirtyeight has last wild card with 88 wins (us). Very doable. I wouldn't mess with rotation. Zimmermann clearly not right. Shut him down for season. He's had one good start since June 1st. Not somebody you want to throw out there in a pennant race.
I think you give Fulmer a well needed skip in the lineup and give Zimmerman 1 start. If he is bad, I agree shut him down. 1 if not 2 of these rookie pictures will slip a bit coming down the stretch.
Jon Morosi @jonmorosi 9m9 minutes ago Justin Upton (@JUST_JUP) has hit 8 HR in the @Tigers last 14 games. Detroit is tied for the best record in @MLB over that span (11-3).
Miggy has now returned to the 30-homer plateau after falling short each of the last two seasons. The 11 punchouts tied a season high for Verlander, who has now topped 200 strikeouts for the first time since 2013. He's also recorded a quality start in all 11 of his second-half outings.
Need 14-8 to get to 90 wins. That's not happening. 12-10 means 88 wins, which would hopefully get us into a play in game for the 2nd spot. Disheartening to be 7-3 in our last 10 and drop a game to the Tribe during that stretch. Gonna be worse when Zimm throws BP tomorrow.
Except that asking a team 12 wins over after 140 games to finish 21-11 seems outlandish. We're simply not scoring enough runs to justify it. If we'd grabbed 2 of 3 from the Sox, pounding their shitty pitching, and only had 13-9 to go, I'd agree. And yes, I know that's nor supportable statistically, but that's my feeling.
This is on the front office. Zimmerman had been garbage since May 1st, gave up 7 runs in his last start against minor leaguers, yet they still thought it was a good idea to throw him out there in a pennant race. Against one of better offenses in majors too. Shut his fucking ass down for the season, and hope that he's better next year
Thursday's starter was TBA. Safe to assume that will be Pelfrey now. Then it should be normal JV- Fulmer - Norris - Boyd - Sanchez for remainder of season.
The News already has an article about whether the Tigers can start Zimmerman again. Obviously they can't, but that's hilarious before the game is even over.
Kinsler has been back to being outstanding the last 14 games. OPS around 1.000 over that stretch after tonight's 4 hit game. Really nice night for the 'pen. One back of the Jays now.
A Tiger starter hasn't won a game since 8/26. Somehow they're 9-8 in that stretch. Largely because the pitching has kept them in games while the offense loafs. Only scored more than 4 runs 6 times in 17 games.
Pelfrey lasted 1.2 today. Anibal went 4.0 yesterday. Boyd went 3.2 on Tuesday. Norris pitched 6.1 on Monday, thankfully, after Verlander threw 5 innings on Sunday and Zimmerman couldn't get through 2 on Saturday. 21.2 innings over the last 6 games from the starters. The bullpen is going to be destroyed. I bet Zimmerman makes his next scheduled start at this point, because the other options are either Pelfey or Sanchez or Farmer. Meanwhile, the offense is getting stymied by the terrible lefty Hector Santiago.
Victor, JD and Upton are facing Santiago for the 3rd time, with Santiago into 80 pitches. It is time to do something. Victor pops up.
James McCann is a really good starting catcher against LHP. I'm currently working on a proposal that I will add to my letter to Avila regarding offseason moves where we trade Anibal for Brian McCann + cash.
Yeah, we have 16 games left and we probably need to go 11-5 to tie for the WC, but if we go 5-4 over the next 9 we'll feel like we're in the race with clinched and resting Cleveland and terrible Atlanta on tap.
