That's more the motivation of the state for passing the law. what I don't understand is that for the most part welfare recipients in fact use that money for useful, beneficial things. It's done to fix a relatively non-existent problem, like voter fraud
I can see your point, but I guess I look at it the other way. If most people do use the money as they should, then it shouldn't affect most people and certainly not those who aren't abusing the system. So even if the affect is limited, it won't hurt those using it properly but it will "catch" those using it for items it isn't intended for. Would there have been better uses for the legal system's time? Sure. But now that it's done, I agree.
Ah see idk, that welfare money should go to necessities. I believe that most use it for those necessities, a tattoo is a luxury for disposable income
Good idea, Beo. With the Poor all tatted up, we'll be able to identify and avoid them more easily. Let's just hope it doesn't turn into a star-bellied sneetches situation.
If I give a guy a few bucks on the street I hope he uses it for food, but if he uses it for booze that's on him. If I don't want him to use it on booze I shouldn't give him money. If someone saves part of the assistance they receive to use on something others consider a luxury I don't have an issue with that. IMO most on public assistance aren't on it because they are lazy. I also don't think are satisfied with being on it. Allow them to make purchases like any adult would. Other than illegal activity people should be able to buy whatever they want. No.
True Fine point made, but my worry is that doing it fuels the really shitty stereotype of the welfare queen that's the reason why Kansas passed that stupid law
The big stereotype in NJ is the hairstylist who gets paid entirely in cash by the owner of the salon so that it doesn't interfere with her welfare checks. That bugs me.
I get that. But, like you've pointed out the reality is different than the sterotypes that feed the anti public assistance fuel. I just think treating decent individuals like children we have to save from themselves isn't helpful. I guess if you could prove that a person is taking advantage of the system you should cut him/her off but if he is saving money for a "luxury " item I don't have an issue. Shit if he/she can budget in an adult beverage they should be able to. Again other than illegal activity they should be able to budget and spend the money how they see fit. FWIW I have certain beliefs about capitalism which is why I have this opinion .
instead of giving people on welfare money, why don't we supply them with the necessities that the money we give them is intended to go towards? Instead of $200 for food, supply them with apples, milk, bread, etc. Instead of cash, give them clothes (it could even be government clothes, something inexpensive, but breathable, or warm, or whatever). This isn't about fashion, it's about not being cold, and having shoes. I suspect a large number of people currently on welfare would be strongly opposed to this idea. And I hate the idea of government being involved in purchasing or producing clothes, goods, or food, but I suspect it would be cheaper in the long run than the current alternative. The school breakfast/lunch programs are a complete mess and the food barely qualifies as edible, so my faith in the government's ability to actually do what I'm suggesting is slim at best.
If you can't see why the government issuing uniforms to people on welfare is a ridiculously stupid idea, there is no point in attempting to explain its stupidity.
Tops' trolling is nothing new or creative. It's the same tired act as so many have done before him. He's just found somewhat new subject matter to use the same schtick on.
Humans need to stop shaking hands, it's gross. I wash my hands but I see a ton of nasty assholes that don't.
Ted Cruz is absurdly smart, which is why it's so offensive that he takes the dumbest, least academic stance on every issue.
Early Beastie Boys stuff sucks. Sucks hard. Actually, they only have two good albums, Ill Communication and Hello Nasty.
why's it have to be uniforms? it's clothes. What kind of "uniform" are you wearing today? What's the point of clothes? they are a necessity to cover your body, provide warmth, etc. If the idea of welfare is to provide essentials for those who cannot provide those essentials for themselves, then who gives a shit if it's Ralph Lauren, Fubu, or Target special? This isn't a fashion show, it's providing essential items to those in need.
burlap sacks with zip-off sleeves and pant legs warm in the winter and zip away to stay cool in the summer
The fact that you are attempting to argue that mass produced cheap clothing intended for welfare recipients wouldn't be some sort of uniform shows how little thought you've put into this.
the government could contract with Luis Vuitton, I don't care. I know in your mind what I'm suggesting looks like a prison jump suite, but that's your mind, not my suggestion.
So what are you suggesting and why are you suggesting it? What's the point of giving clothes instead of money to purchase clothing? Is it to save money? Is it so they don't purchase shit like "Jordans". Is it because fuck them they are on welfare and we can? Explain how any reason you come up with doesn't result in mass produced cheap clothing. Don't get me started on the stupidity of just handing them food instead of money to purchase food.
because when you give people money, you also give them the freedom to buy whatever they want, which is not the intent of welfare. it's not a program designed to help people learn how to efficiently spend money, it's to provide them with essential items. Money is not an essential item, the things you *should* be buying with that money are. Cut out the middle man and just give people in need essential items. The number of kids who show up to inner city schools hungry is fucking appalling. For many of these kids the only meals they eat all day is the free breakfast, the free lunch and the free snack provided at the school. fuck their retarded parents for not providing them the essentials, like food, but that's what happens. I don't see the problem with giving a hungry person food instead of money to go buy food. You are relying on the least educated, from the worst backgrounds, and often mentally ill, sometimes drug addicted people to make good judgments about how to spend the free money we give them? Tell me again what a great idea this is.
to think Hello Nasty is better than Paul's Boutique, Check Your Head or Licensed to Ill completely blows my mind. I could see someone who just didn't like the Beastie Boys disliking those albums, but to like Hello Nasty and not like the others just makes no sense.
This isn't just an inner city school problem, also it isn't because parents are fucking retarded it is that they have to choose between spending the money they have on clothes, food, rent, utilities. There are so many things that go into this discussion instead of just saying that parents are stupid and don't spend what they have to feed their kids.
It's not all parents, and many are in the dilemma you are describing. others, though, are not. Some have a 50" flat screen and send their kids to school hungry. In either case, providing people with actual food, shelter, and clothing does no harm. The people who have to choose between clothes, food, rent and utilities no longer have to make that choice. It's all provided. And the people who make poor choices are no longer given the option to make a poor choice, it's all provided.
Those kids only eat their free breakfast and lunch because a very large portion of food stamp recipients sell them for .50 on the dollar. I grew up with a lot of kids who only ever ate what they got at school. They can't force people to eat certain foods by just giving people certain foods but they do need to come up with a way to make it impossible to sell your food stamps. A lot of them also buy a whole bunch of bullshit. Fresh out of school I was a manager with a lot of low income workers below me and every time I'd head out to eat or pick up something to drink next door one of them would offer me their food stamp card and pen and tell me to get whatever I want but to bring them back a Sprite and M&Ms etc. Shouldn't be able to buy soda and candy.
No, instead you are going to stigmatized and ostracized even more for being poor. Why don't we just make them wear big yellow stars on their clothing as well?
Some? I did census work in the hood a few years back and they all have large tvs and a dish on the roof.
flipping your food stamps for money is pretty smart and actually pretty good for the businesses that get that redeem the food stamps and the businesses that the exchanged money is spent on. Its a net positive for everyone involved. "Just because >:( " is a dumb reason to stop it.
We should round up all the poor. Make sure they all live in the same fenced up area. Make sure they receive their allotment of food at specific stores in those area. Make sure they get their yearly outfits. Great fucking idea.
The logistics of this suggestion are ridiculous. How many items of clothing are you allowing each person? How many pairs of shoes? What happens if they outgrow the clothing? What happens if this high quality clothing rips tears, or is otherwise ruined? Do you provide specialty clothing like cleats? How many pairs of underwear are allowed? Do women get things like pantyhose? How much? The whole idea is dumb, and we haven't even touched on the societal issues.
Do people not see when they use foo stamps at the grocery store, or see the line of kids getting the free lunches?? Would you wear a yellow star and eat food or not want the stigma and go hungry?
holy shit did you just argue that "maybe wearing a yellow star to identify as a dirty poor isnt that bad" hahahahahaha
the one house my wife goes to has a 90" LOL. she knows it's 90" because she saw it and said - holy shit how big is that tv???
if the argument is that they will be easily identifiable based on their usage of the "free shit" that the governemnt hands out, my argument is that that already happens and if it comes down to, literally comes down to basic necessities to sustain life.....
