There are things Perron does well, and for a lot of teams it makes sense to sign him for another season. Detroit bringing him back would be complete negligence though, with out impending cap crunch and need for kids to have a path forward.
Normally I'd discount the Winged Wheel Podcast stuff as speculation, but they seem to have sources now...and they said that the Wings really want him back. Take it for what it's worth. I think he's useful to a point...I don't believe his "usefulness" fits where this team is at, but I'm not a GM
It’s been speculated by a few insiders since the deadline, so I anticipate it’ll happen. The idea of having Perron lugging a piano around the ice for an already slow team pains me greatly. The goal for next year should be getting younger and faster. My concern is neither actually happens.
I’m doing my season ending review now because even if this team gets hot and makes the playoffs, we know what the Wings are at this point in the season. Season Grade: C- It’s been enjoyable watching the team stay in the playoff race, but the only reason that’s the case is because this will be the first non-shortened season where a team could make the playoffs with less than 90 points. You can say that Detroit was on track to exceed 90 points without that dismal March but my counter to that is this was a streaky team all season long so it isn’t a shock at all they fell apart. Management Grade: C- Yzerman’s FA haul was productive but at the end of the day we are a deeply flawed team that is entering next season with a cap crunch. That’s unacceptable for a team five years into a rebuild. I also worry that we have impeded Seider’s development with a ludicrous deployment. That falls on Lalonde as much as anyone but part of that is based on the fact that we don’t have anyone else to eat those minutes. And also, we can’t overlook the fact that Lalonde was Yzerman’s hand picked coach. Coaching: D I actually think Lalonde is a good hockey mind with some really good ideas but his turtling anytime we get a lead in the third is embarrassing. More egregious, as stated above, is the deployment of Seider which could truly impact his development. Our even strength number possession numbers are in the same stratosphere as teams like the Ducks. That’s pathetic. Goaltending: D+ Lyon over performing his contract is great, but we carried three goalies on the roster all season and none of them are NHL starting caliber. Defense: D- Walman and Seider both regressed from last season, though Chiarot did improve, albeit in a heavily sheltered role. Petry has been bad, Holl is non playable and Maata is what he is. The good news is Edvinsson continues to look solid. Offense: C We had plenty of guys score double digit goals even though the even strength numbers were bad. Raymond took a big jump and Larkin solidified himself as a 1C. Player Development: B Grand Rapids has rounded into form, led by guys like Cossa, Edvinsson (until recently), Kasper and Mazur. That’s great news. Danielson has looked much better since being traded to Portland and ASP has been great all season in Sweden. The reason I didn’t go higher is because the Wings roster didn’t have any rookies playing until Edvinsson was called up. Outlook for 24-25: It is hard to say what is going to happen next season. Until we have clarity on Seider and Raymond’s next deals we won’t know what the cap situation looks like. I would say the floor for both of them combined is 14 mil in cap space, and that’s assuming one of them signs a bridge deal. If they both go long term, the floor becomes 16 mil, which gives us roughly 15 mil to add six players to the roster. A big chunk of that needs to likely go to a goalie (Markstrom makes the most sense) as much as that pains me. We just aren’t good enough to stay in playoff contention next season without great goaltending. Yzerman will likely have to own a lot of mistakes this Summer (buying out Petry?, Trading Holl and Husso with sweeteners to get out of those deals?) but I don’t think that will be a problem for him. The thing we cannot do is be super active when free agency begins. If that happens, we are completely fucked.
Prefacing this by saying Khan is an idiot, but if these lines are legitimate, I’m giving everyone associated with the team an F.
Czarnik being on the second line only makes sense if Kasper is getting called up and slotted into the spot. I would guess that’s unlikely but it’s the only thing that would make sense.
Just think of the net front presence, and you know he's gonna fight. Think Raymond is getting cross checked for free anymore with that loose cannon on the team?
I would say that realistically speaking Detroit has to win the next three games based on the opposition.
What a fucking gross hit with the ref just staring at it and good for Valeno sticking up for himself.
This is just awful hockey. Can’t get any possession and then multiple fucked up breakouts when they actually have it. So lucky to still be winning.
Chiarot bought the team a lot of extra time there so I’ll take that extra two. I think he knew exactly what he was doing.
Capitals lost in OT. If Detroit beats Washington in regulation on Tuesday, that could be a death blow to the Caps.
Top 50 draft pick at the end of his D+1 year. Hasn’t scored a goal since his sophomore year of high school. Thanks Draper.
Big fucking yikes. Has he made a good 2nd round pick other than early returns on Augustine?? 2019 36th Tuomisto 54th Mastrosimone 60th Johansson 2020 32nd Wallinder 51st Niederbach 55rh Hanas 2021 36th Buium 2022 40th James 52nd Buchelnikov 2023 41st Augustine 42nd Gibson 47th Cleveland
All of those guys are busts. Ridiculous how he doesn't get more heat for this. That's what happens when you hire your unqualified friends to help you run the draft.
Embarrassing that we sucked ass for all those years. Stockpiled all those 2nd round picks that we were all pumping up, only to end up with 11 busts, and 1 guy that might a 1b goalie at the next level.
There’s been some bad ones but there’s also some NHLers on this list as they further develop. There’s just not any home runs outside of maybe Augustine as this point.
