The song Something More Than Free is fucking awesome. Fuck anyone who thinks different. "When I get my reward my work will all be done And I will sit back in my chair beside the father and the son No more holes to fill and no more rocks to break And no more loading boxes on the trucks for someone else's sake 'Cause a hammer needs a nail And the poor man's up for sale Guess I'm doin' what I'm on this earth to do And I don't think on why I'm here where it hurts I'm just lucky to have the work And every night I dream I'm drowning in the dirt But I thank God for the work." Those lyrics are so fucking real. I know so many people that songs applies to. Those salt of the earth, hard working and God fearing people.
Isbell has as good of an ability to really tap into the soul of the blue collar small town type as any songwriter I've heard in my entire life. He might be the best at it of anyone ever to be honest. I'm biased of course because I'm also from a smaller Alabama city (albeit a pretty different one) and can relate to directly to specific things in the songs but I really and truly think the guy is on track to end his career as one of the greatest to ever do it. Everybody loved Southeastern and most people love Something More Than Free too. My brother and I discuss which is better fairly often and I honestly can't pick. Considering how difficult it is to follow up an album like Southeastern, I honestly think he matched it with his latest effort. Cannot wait for the future. Also cannot wait to see Isbell and Josh Ritter a week from now. /longishpost
Jason Isbell won Americana Album of the Year last night. I was fortunate enough to go to this after party thing at a local bar. He got on stage with Amanda and played for a little while. Steve Earle did the same. It was pretty cool.
I hope this doesn't sound dramatic but that's because he's less of a songwriter and more of a poet with a guitar.
The songs are so real. So, so real. It's like a master class in writing each time you put on one of his albums.
Guys, I'm kinda digging We're All Gonna Die. It's definitely over-produced (see: Mills, Blake) but the bones of some great songs are there and it's an interesting departure from their normal sound. I respect them taking chances too. Early favorites are Roll Tide (shocker), Picture of a Man (could be a Paul Simon song), and For No Good Reason (if it were slower we'd be comparing it to A Little Bit of Everything). Anyway, you don't have to agree with me but please be nice to me.
Jason killed it on Friday. I've never heard him play Children of Children, but that was his finale on Friday before coming back for the encore. It was a fantastic show, especially that song.

You don't like Blake Mills as producer? I thought he was pretty integral to "Sound & Color," which was one of the best albums of '15.
Also, what are the initial thoughts on the new DBT? surprised to only see a couple posts on it. bout to give it my first spin.
He actually won a Grammy for that. And I do like Blake Mills as a producer (and performer too). I think what most fans are having trouble with is that his style conflicts with the typical Dawes sound. There's added distortion to both guitar and bass, more strings and organ as opposed to electric piano, etc. Having listened to the album two dozen times now I love what how they did it. It's a departure for sure but it flows perfectly and all the songs are well-written and well-composed.
Gotcha. I'm a big fan of his as a performer as well but was unfamiliar with his production style until S&C. Have only given the new Dawes a couple listens and it didn't immediately grab me, but need to listen some more.
Whats funny is Blake used to be in Dawes when it was formerly known as Simon & Dawes. He also wrote Hey Lover, which Dawes put on a record
Peace in the Valley too. I like his version of Hey Lover quite a bit. He's good at what he does, people just seem to be fired up that We're All Gonna Die is less bare-bones than they're used to.

I'll preface by saying I still love DBT and the new album. I think Mike Patton is an infinitely better bass player than Shonna Tucker, and it is very prevalent in their last two albums. I just don't know if they write better songs now than they used to. (Also disclaimer: I don't give a fuck about lyrics)
Jason Isbell and Jose Canseco have been tweeting at each other tonight. I don't know why but I really like that.
I follow the two independently, probably my only two follows that aren't related to sports teams and news I care about. I was confused as hell scrolling through my timeline just now.
Jose played minor league baseball in Huntsville, Alabama for the now defunct Huntsville Stars in the late 80s. In one of Isbell's tweets he refers to Canseco as "Parkway Jose." The Stars games were played close to a major road in Huntsville called Memorial Parkway. Jose used to hit balls out of the stadium and onto the Parkway, hence the nickname Parkway Jose. Like everyone else in the area back then, Isbell says he was a Stars kid in the 80s. And that's likely more than you cared to know about Isbell and Parkway Jose.

Saw Jason and the 400 Unit last night in Columbia. Tremendous show. Setlist: Go It Alone Palmetto Rose 24 Frames Something More Than Free Decoration Day Speed Trap Town If It Takes a Lifetime How to Forget Traveling Alone Codeine Dress Blues Alabama Pines Flying Over Water Cover Me Up Relatively Easy Outfit Never Gonna Change Encore: Storm Windows (John Prine cover) *w/ Josh Ritter Super 8 Children of Children
Seeing Jason tonight in Tampa. Will be my second time seeing him, with the first being last year. Excited.
Show was awesome last night. Enjoyed it more than last year's. I tracked the setlist. Loved that I got to hear Outfit. Flying Over Water Stockholm 24 Frames Somethign More Than Free Decoration Day Speed Trap Town If It Takes a Lifetime Traveling Alone How To Forget Codeine Elephant Alabama Pines Cover Me Up Relatively Easy Outfit Never Gonna Change Encore: Storm Windows w/ Ritter Super 8 Children of Children Crowd gave a loud yell during Traveling Alone when he said the line "Ybor city on a Friday night" (since we're in Tampa). After the song he said how it was a singable place, rolls right off the tongue. Then something like, "Rolls everywhere. Then you roll off the sidewalk."
Oh, on another note, he looks pretty damn skinny. I know he's dropped weight since cutting out the booze, but it seemed noticeable in comparison to last year.
