Yes, the previous owner built the pond about 25 years ago. He got the fish a couple of years after that, so they're at least 20 years old.
My previous Ring was the wired version and yes getting used to a new FOV is gonna take some getting used to. My old transformer ended up being the right one for a Nest and the doorbell wiring was a snap once I was a got my fat fingers to work correctly. I have 4 Blink outdoor cameras that I've been pretty satisfied with. Two of them are the XT versions where you can talk through them. Haven't had any problems.
They can get up to 50 years old, I don't know if I'd want to keep them that long. It depends on their color pattern but they can be worth several thousand dollars when they get this big but I don't want to sell our guys since honestly they're low maintenance. The pond itself is a lot more work.
No, I love them! Honestly they may not be worth anything close to it, they could be just a couple hundred dollars. It's a weird niche thing where people only pay money like that for ones with really bright colors and certain patterns. The previous owner has helped show us a lot of stuff about the pond and I don't want to immediately just trash all his hard work.
I think it’s pretty awesome to have several thousand dollars in my bank account. You could buy new fish and keep the pond without feeling guilt for destroying the former owners hard work
How much is a koi fish? Koi fish prices range from $10 for a 5” juvenile to over $50,000 for champion level quality.
Again, to be clear, there's no guarantee they're worth that much. I haven't had someone come out and give me a quote for selling my fish slaves. They're probably worth more than a few dollars, but I'd bet you could buy 20 year koi for a few hundred dollars if you don't care about their apperance.
Some people look at wine and art as investments, I think Pile Driving Miss Daisy needs to get some more young koi and tell people his retirement fund is in the pond.
Does it matter which pre-emergent I go with to prevent weeds? Is there a recommended one to go with on here? Just moved into a new place and the yard looks nice so trying to keep it that way but not really sure where to even start.
Type of course matters but timing matters more. Are your soil temps above 55 degrees already? https://www.greencastonline.com/tools/soil-temperature
Just make sure it’s marked safe for lawns. And that you apply when it isn’t too hot per the instructions. Probably me being overly cautious but regardless of maximum high temp I don’t apply lawn treatments at the peak of the day if it gets full sun
Don't play coy with us. You had the pics queued up pretty quick. (I think what you're doing is cool btw)
This was my dad's backyard pond. I helped him dig it years ago but he did all the rest of the work. He had some koi that grew to substantial size. When he fell ill, it became my responsibility to maintain the pond. After he passed and we were prepping the house for sale, we had to get rid of the fish. Trying to sell them was not worth the trouble (a lot of koi in California). My brother-in-law knew a fish guy and he came to the house and took them. My folks loved sitting out by the pond and watching those fish.
Paint price has doubled since I worked as a painter. $1k max in materials. 4 man days to power wash, prep and paint a house that small. $400-500 a day for a journeyman painter here. Has to be way less in Oregon. Two painters could spray and trim a house that size in a day.
All this talk of koi is giving me PTSD of a koi triangle shape puzzle my grandparents had that I didn’t have the patience for.
Didn’t you say you have cedar shake siding? Those quotes have “he doesn’t want to prep this himself and neither do we” built into them I think.
Yeah paint has skyrocketed in price. He was telling me I need 25 gallons for the walls, 5-7 gallons for the soffits, 2-4 gallons for the trim. Thats about $1500-2k of paint at Sherwin Williams. That amount seem correct?
I have old stucco siding with very few cracks and in pretty good shape. Crazy easy to paint but I think it still needs to be back rolled? Idk. Yeah it feels like I'm getting the "I could be doing bigger jobs, make me say yes" price.
Seems a bit much (volume of paint). I painted a 1,600 sq ft two story Victorian with cedar siding plus a two car garage and used less than 5 gallons. Maybe 2 gallons of primer for some areas too. That seems like too much paint.
Stucco needs elastomeric paint. Adds 20-30% to price of paint. No way he uses 25 gallons of paint. A gallon of base color will cover almost 400sqft. That’s brush and rolled. Sprayer and you get half that coverage. Still nowhere near 25 gallons. I’ve never trimmed a house that took 2 gallons of semigloss.
Was pretty warm today but the last week or 2 have been colder. Based on that link: Current Soil Temperature : 68° 24-Hour Average : 64.3° 5 Day Average : 52°
Awesome, yeah the “safe for lawns” is where my main concern was. Any preference or brand that you typically defer to?
Well I'm like 80% positive my stucco already has like 5 layers of latex paint on it, so we just went with that. This stucco is probably from the 50’s
Appreciate it. Had heard others recommend that as well so I'll go that route. Last dumb question from me (for a while). I see these two products they offer: https://www.preen.com/products/preen-lawn-weed-control/ https://www.preen.com/products/preen-lawn-crabgrass-control/ The first seems to be one you actually apply when weeds are actively growing, but the second just mentions crabgrass. I'm assuming that second is a pre-emergent that would work for almost all weeds, not just crabgrass, as a preventative measure?
Moved into our house ten years ago. The first set of LED bulbs I put in the kitchen/hallway are still kicking. I’ve replaced a lot of others multiple times. They just don’t make em like they used to.
Ok haha, one last dumb question. Is there an easy way to find out the exact grass type at my new place? I've used tall fescue in the past with really good success, but want to make sure I am a little more attentive on this new yard.
What part of the country are you in? Is your lawn currently 90 plus percent uniform turf grass or is it a 50/50 mix of grasses and weeds?
Reach out to your county extension office. They had me bring in a number of samples and they identified the grass types. Basically begged me to do soil sampling because “we’re here to help you!” Super nice people and I think they’re just bored.
Second this. My agent was geeked to come help ID a tree that I couldn't. (Post Oak, which are rarish here) 100% a good part of government that nobody takes advantage of and I'm guessing few even know they exist.
We close on our sell and buy Monday. This has caused an issue about our stuff. I asked the saleswoman at our new build community if we can move into the garage this weekend and she said she can't tell me yes, but they don't check. Problem solved! The construction manager calls me today and tells me he chipped some of the garage away while cleaning it, so he's going to epoxy it for us for free. Fantastic, except I don't know when they plan on doing it and was needing the garage this weekend. You guys think if I just move everything inside on Sunday I'll be ok?
