My brother is in the Coast Guard and was telling me something similar for enlisted (officers can opt out apparently). But the food is often dogshit and he did the math in his head and while not out at sea on a boat, only eats like 15 of their meals a month but gets charged for all of them.
That sucks they get crappy meals, but at least that is optional. Don’t have that much of problem with option. But a mandatory deduction is fucking wild. How is that even legal?
He's not charged for it, It's an untaxed allowance, it doesn't come out of the base pay. If you don't have access to your commands food facilities or you aren't provided food, you get the full allowance.
