CITIZEN SOLDIER is a dramatic feature film, told from the point of view of a group of Soldiers in the Oklahoma Army National Guard's 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, known since World War II as the "Thunderbirds." Set in one of the most dangerous parts of Afghanistan at the height of the surge, it is a heart-pounding, heartfelt grunts' eye-view of the war. A modern day Band of Brothers, Citizen Soldier tells the true story of a group of young Soldiers and their life-changing tour of duty in Afghanistan, offering an excruciatingly personal look into modern warfare, brotherhood, and patriotism. Using real footage from multiple cameras, including helmet cams, these Citizen Soldiers give the audience an intimate view into the chaos and horrors of combat and, in the process, display their bravery and valor under the most hellish of conditions

A documentary focused on Stuxnet, a piece of self-replicating computer malware that the U.S. and Israel unleashed to destroy a key part of an Iranian nuclear facility, and which ultimately spread beyond its intended target.

I watched this documentary last weekend. I had never heard of it, but man it was interesting. Those athletes are incredible. I thought it was surprising how many of them came from post graduate degree fields or programs. The explanation they gave (that this was something they could actually fail at) was really intriguing to me and a good glimpse at the psychology behind these people.

GRINGO: THE DANGEROUS LIFE OF JOHN MCAFEE

    Rated TVMA • 97 minutes

Documentary about the bizarre and scandalous life of tech millionaire John McAfee - famed inventor of anti-virus software - who goes off the grid to live in Belize, building a compound and harem, becoming a drug lord and developing an armed security force to guard himself against the police until he is a suspect in his neighbor's murder and must make a great escape.

Watched Glory Daze on some club kid in the NYC party scene in the 80/90s that killed someone 20 years ago. McCauley Cauken played the dude, Michael Alig, in the movie Party Monsters.

Documentary is alright, but fuck this guy

I thought the same thing. Only thing that I could come up with is that the documentary was done by one of his buddies/club kids and put him in a good light.

What I like most about the documentary was the change in NYC over the last 30 years from a shithole to the greatest city in the world. I wish they wouldve actually spent more time on that. All these CLub Kids getting mad because people were shutting down their clubs was righteous. They would talk about how drugs were everywhere, people were OD'ing, yet, these clubs were all in good fun and should stay open!

Also watched Man vs Snake about a race to set the points record on an arcade game called Snake, which takes like 40 straight hours of playing. Not as good a The King of Kong, but pretty good. Billy Mitchell isn't really involved except to provide hot takes.

Watching Oliver Stone's American History and I had no idea that Harry Truman was such a piece of shit racist. Also didn't know that he completely lucked his way into presidency and that he had only met FDR twice before his death. Truman had no idea we were building the atomic bomb and needed a South Carolina senator to explain that situation and basically hold his hand throughout the beginning of his presidency.

Really enjoyed that series. Obviously its very slanted in a certain direction but it hits on a lot of important trends that don't get the attention they should. Good watch.

The John McAfee doc is fucking insane. That dude was straight up in Heart of Darkness mode down there. Getting Belizian gangsters to just wack people he didnt like and torture people and shit. Outrageous.

Also, people should definitely check out Sour Grapes like triceratops recommended. Really interesting story.

Limelight is definitely the best documentary on that whole 80's club scene. Way less about that twisted fuck Michael Alig and way more on Peter Gaitan who was a straight up boss and was about making money over dressing like an asshole and snorting ketamine

Gonna check out that McAfee doc. Is it available on hulu or Netflix?

Sort of disagree. The filthy aspect I agree, but HS basketball is not the best way to judge talent. All star type games/camps are. The coaches don't have to recruit year round. Just each summer. That doesn't anger me, even as a HS guy.

And also the main character really surprised me. Don't judge a book by it's cover I guess.

Is there any point in watching this documentary? I turned it off in the first episode because he was talking about Stalin as if Stalin was a great guy and ridiculed the western Allied leaders because they wouldn't let Stalin use Russian troops to attack Germany from the west. Can you imagine how the world would look right now if the Soviet Union had conquered all of Europe?

Thought it was really good. Oasis is unique in that they got so big, so fast. Didn't have to pay their dues because they were uber talented, and were playing stadiums within 3 years. Then self destructed just as fast.

As a companion piece I'd suggest a doc about a band that never quite made it. Anvil! Story of Anvil. People dealing with fame or chasing it, is fascinating if it's captured real.

Probably been talked about but the CNN docs about the 60s, 70s, and 80s are on Netflix and Youtube. They are all good but I think the 60s doc is the best. What a tumultuous time in America.
